Choose a phone for long battery life by comparing runtime results from the same test protocol, then use battery capacity in mAh as context—not as a runtime score. Also check charging behavior, heat management, and battery-health features: those affect how convenient the phone is to keep charged and how useful its battery remains over time.
Battery life and battery lifespan are different
Battery life is the time a phone runs between charges. Battery lifespan is how long its battery remains useful before it needs replacement. Apple makes this distinction in its iPhone battery and performance guidance. A phone can last a long time between charges when new and still lose capacity as the battery ages.

For a buying decision, consider both: how often you will need to recharge during a typical day, and how well the battery is expected to hold up over your ownership period.
Does a bigger battery mean longer battery life?
Not by itself. Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe charge capacity, but runtime also depends on how much power the phone uses. Screen size and brightness, resolution, processor and modem activity, software behavior, signal conditions, and your workload all matter.

Samsung lists the Galaxy S24 Ultra (model S928B) at 5,000 mAh typical capacity and cautions that capacity and usage hours vary with settings and use. That figure is useful context, not proof that the phone will outlast a model with a smaller battery. See Samsung’s battery-capacity information.
There is no universal mAh number that guarantees a full day. Start with your own use—screen time, camera and video, navigation, gaming, hotspot use, cellular signal, and time away from a charger—then look for comparable endurance evidence.
How to compare phone battery endurance
Prefer runtime results from a common test protocol. Before comparing figures, check what each test measured: video playback, web browsing or mixed use; screen brightness and refresh rate; Wi-Fi or cellular connection; and the cutoff used to define the end of the test. Results from unlike tests should not be treated as a ranking.

Official product information can also help when it identifies the exact model and test framework. For example, Samsung’s EU Product Information Sheet for model SM-S936B/DS reports the following under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/1669:

These are results for the specified model under the cited regulatory framework, not a promise of an individual’s screen-on time or a cross-brand comparison on their own. The sheet is available as a Samsung product information sheet. Do not infer a marketing name from the model number alone.

Use capacity as a supporting data point alongside test results. If no comparable test is available for your shortlist, avoid declaring a runtime winner based only on mAh or a figure measured under a different workload.
What charging speed and heat tell you
Peak charging wattage does not tell you how long the whole charge takes: charging behavior changes as the battery approaches full. Compare measured time to a useful charge level when available, and check which charger and cable are required. Consider wired and wireless charging separately if you expect to use both.

The evidence here does not establish a single rule for all phones; charging controls and recommendations vary by manufacturer and model. Heat is a more practical concern. Apple warns that using or charging an iPhone in ambient temperatures above 35°C can permanently reduce battery lifespan; it identifies 16–22°C as the ideal ambient range. Samsung says 0–35°C is the Galaxy’s optimal usage temperature. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not a shared operating specification for every phone. Avoid leaving a phone in a hot car or charging it in excessive heat. Cold can temporarily reduce available runtime and may contribute to voltage-related shutdowns, particularly in a degraded battery.
Overnight charging and battery-health features
Overnight charging is not automatically harmful. Apple says iPhone stops charging when full and uses Optimized Battery Charging by default to reduce time spent at full charge; its charging system also reduces current as the battery approaches full. Samsung recommends keeping a Galaxy charge between 20% and 80% when practical and provides Battery protection options. These are device-specific approaches, not universal rules for every phone.

When comparing models, check whether the phone offers optimized charging, a charge limit, or another battery-protection setting, and whether it fits your routine. Such controls can make it easier to manage charging without treating one percentage range as mandatory for all devices.

How battery age changes the decision
Rechargeable batteries lose capacity and peak power as they chemically age. Apple explains that maximum capacity is measured relative to when the battery was new; increased impedance can also affect its ability to deliver instantaneous power. An older battery may therefore provide fewer hours between charges and may struggle with peak demands. Apple summarizes the general process this way: “All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age.”
Apple’s stated design targets are 80% remaining capacity after 500 complete cycles for iPhone 14 and earlier, and after 1,000 cycles for iPhone 15, under ideal conditions. Actual retention varies with use and charging, so these are not guaranteed outcomes or a standard for other brands. The details are in Apple’s battery performance guidance.
If you are buying a used phone, inspect its battery-health reporting and find out whether service or replacement is available. Samsung advises seeking service if a Galaxy has frequent unexpected shutdowns or noticeable battery decline; Apple notes that an aged battery may eventually need replacement. A practical shortlist method
- Describe your day. Estimate screen time and account for camera or video use, navigation, gaming, hotspot use, weak cellular signal, and how long you are typically away from power.
- Gather comparable runtime results. Prefer tests using the same protocol, and record the workload, screen settings, connection, and endpoint. Do not combine unlike tests into a direct ranking.
- Record capacity as context. Compare mAh, but weigh it alongside the display, processor and modem workload, software behavior, and the endurance evidence.
- Assess charging in practice. Look for time to a useful charge level, compatible charger requirements, wired or wireless support you need, heat behavior, and battery-health controls.
- Consider the whole ownership period. Check model-specific support and battery-service information, and weigh a larger phone’s size and weight against how often you will be away from a charger.
Which phone has the longest battery life?
The available official figures here do not establish a current cross-brand runtime winner. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 5,000 mAh typical capacity and the 43-hour result for Samsung model SM-S936B/DS refer to different models and different kinds of information; neither is enough to name a universal leader. Choose from a shortlist using same-protocol endurance tests and the charging and battery-health features that match your use.
