You can try Opera Developer without replacing Opera Stable. On Windows, Opera’s portable or standalone option is the best-supported way in the available guidance to keep Developer in a separate folder. On macOS and Linux, Opera lists Developer downloads, but the available instructions do not establish an equivalent standalone setup. After installing, check each browser’s data paths before changing or removing any profile files.
Download Opera Developer from Opera
Use Opera’s official download page and select the Developer package for your operating system. The page lists Developer for Windows, macOS, and Linux; package options can change, so use the live page rather than relying on an installer filename. Opera release announcements have also linked a Windows portable build alongside macOS and Linux packages.
Windows: use a separate standalone folder
Opera’s Windows portable or standalone option is the clearest documented route to a distinct Developer installation. A 2018 Opera forum post by a moderator or volunteer describes this installer flow:
- Open the Developer installer’s options.
- Set an install path for the new instance, choosing a folder separate from Opera Stable.
- Select “standalone installation,” then proceed with installation.
These steps come from older community guidance, not current official step-by-step documentation. Installer wording and layout may have changed, so treat the labels as guidance rather than a guarantee of the present interface. A separate folder helps keep the Developer program and its profile distinct, but verify the actual data paths after launch.

macOS and Linux: use the official package, then verify
Opera lists Developer packages for macOS and Linux, but the available sources do not provide current equivalent steps for choosing a separate profile or standalone directory on either system. Install the official package for your platform, then inspect the data path in Developer rather than assuming Windows standalone behavior applies.
Check both browsers’ data paths
In Opera Stable and Opera Developer, enter opera:about/ in the address bar and note the exact Opera data paths shown. This lets you confirm which data location each instance is using before moving, copying, or deleting profile files.

Do not delete a profile just to install Developer. Opera’s FAQ recommends backing up Opera files before a clean install; make a backup before any profile changes.

Opera describes Developer as a channel for experimental features and warns that experiments can be unstable and may affect security, privacy, or data. Keep Stable available for everyday browsing and treat Developer as an additional testing build.
