How to Stop Hiking Insoles From Sliding or Bunching Up

Learn how to tell whether your hiking insole or foot is moving, check boot fit, trim only approved insoles, and add removable hold without damaging your footwear.

First identify what is moving: the insole against the boot, or your foot against the insole. For an insole that shifts, check that it fits the shoe, sits flat, and is positioned correctly; trim it only if its manufacturer says it is trimmable. If a correctly fitted insole still moves, removable double-sided tape or hook-and-loop strips can add hold. Don’t permanently glue or cut a structured or prescribed orthosis without professional guidance.

Find out what is actually sliding

Take off the boot and inspect the insole. If it has shifted, curled, or bunched up, the problem is at the insole-to-shoe interface. If the insole stays in place but your foot moves over it or lifts inside the boot, focus instead on boot fit, lacing, socks, and the foot-to-insole interface. A heel cup by itself does not necessarily anchor an insert to the shoe.

Check fit and placement before modifying anything

  1. Check the liner: Remove the factory liner only if it is removable and the replacement insole’s instructions call for its removal. Do not pull at a liner that appears integrated into the boot’s construction.
  2. Seat the insole: Place it flat in the shoe, align its heel with the boot’s heel, and check that the forefoot follows the shoe’s footprint without curling or folding.
  3. Check room and closure: Make sure the boot still fastens normally and leaves adequate toe room. A thicker replacement, or an insole stacked on top of the original, takes up space. If the combination crowds your toes, raises your heel, or requires excessive lace tension, reconsider it rather than forcing the fit.

Manufacturer and retailer guidance emphasizes flat placement, heel alignment, and checking available room. Those instructions are useful for fitting the relevant product, not proof that any one setup works for every boot.

Trim only an insole designed to be trimmed

Some full-length insoles are trim-to-fit; others are not. Check the instructions for your specific product before cutting. If trimming is allowed, use the removable factory liner as a template, make small cuts at the toe or forefoot, and test the fit after each cut. Keep the structured heel and arch intact. SOLE’s footbed instructions, for example, advise using the original liner as a guide when trimming is needed and trimming at the toe end; follow the instructions for the insole you own, not another brand’s.

  • Superfeet Insoles for Odor Control:- Moisturewick top cover helps reduce odors and keeps feet fresh; keep you moving comfortably all day in the outdoors
  • Formerly Known as Superfeet ADAPT Hike Max:- Hike Cushion insoles are the same great arch support insoles you love, now with a new name

Do not cut a custom, prescribed, posted, structural, or pressure-relief orthosis unless the clinician or manufacturer directs you to. Altering a structured device may change how it functions.

Add removable hold if the fit is already right

If the insole fits the boot and lies flat but still migrates, try removable double-sided insole tape or hook-and-loop strips between the shoe and insole. Protalus recommends removable tape or Velcro strips, and a Dr. Scholl’s user manual also mentions tape and Velcro pads; the manual’s applicability to a particular current product is not established, so check your own product’s instructions. Treat these as supplemental, reversible options: adhesive can make later removal more difficult. Avoid super glue, rigid or permanent adhesive, and sharp fasteners that could damage the boot or insole.

Hiking Boot Insoles for Men & Women - Arch Support Inserts
  • Hiking Insoles for Men and Women: The arch is medium and cushioned, not stiff. They are soft enough for comfort over ten miles, but firm enough to keep your foot steady on rocks and roots. You will really notice the difference on long downhills
  • Up to 56% Shock Absorption: When you carry a full pack, every step can feel heavier. Our shock layer takes in up to 56% of impact before it reaches your knees and lower back, so you stay comfortable all day
  • Up to 47% Energy Return: The arch returns up to 47% of the energy you put into each step, rather than just absorbing it. It also helps take pressure off your knees when you walk downhill. By the end of a long day, your legs will feel the difference
  • Dry Feet on Tough Climbs: A breathable cover and non-sweat layer pull heat and moisture away from your skin, keeping your boots drier on steep climbs and in warm weather. Wet feet cause blisters, and this helps prevent them
  • Sized for Men and Women who Hike: Use the size chart to find your fit. Place your boots' insoles on top and trim around the front for an exact fit. These insoles are light enough for trail runners and tough enough for backpacking boots

When to change the setup or get help

Stop forcing a combination that remains unstable or causes discomfort. Try a more compatible boot-and-insole combination, or ask a qualified footwear-fitting professional or clinician for advice if the insole is prescribed or structured. Seek professional review if slipping continues or you experience persistent pressure, numbness, irritation, or rubbing.
