How to Choose a PC That Can Run an Early-Access Action RPG Smoothly

Find out how to choose a PC for an early-access action RPG by matching every component to the game’s current requirements and your target settings.

There is no single PC specification that guarantees smooth performance across early-access action RPGs. Choose the game first, then compare your PC with the game’s current official requirements—especially the tier that matches your target resolution, graphics settings, and frame rate. A “minimum” spec is not a promise of smooth play at high settings.

Start with the exact game and its current requirements

Action RPGs can differ sharply in their CPU, GPU, memory, and storage demands. Open the official PC requirements for the specific game you plan to play, and check them again near purchase: early-access builds and published requirements can change. The examples below show how to read requirement tiers; they are not a universal baseline for the genre.

Compare the whole PC, not just the graphics card

Check every listed requirement against the PC’s actual configuration. A GPU that appears to match does not establish compatibility by itself.

  • Graphics card and VRAM: Compare the exact GPU model and its video memory with the tier you want.
  • Processor: Check the listed CPU model or equivalent tier; a strong GPU cannot compensate for a processor that falls short of the game’s requirements.
  • System memory: Match the RAM capacity specified for the chosen tier.
  • Operating system and graphics API: Confirm that your Windows version and supported API meet the game’s requirements.
  • Storage: Check both the required free space and whether the developer requires or recommends an SSD.
  • Performance target: Look for the resolution, graphics preset, and frame rate the developer associates with each tier. If a target is not stated, do not assume one.

Use the tier that matches the experience you want

Requirement labels are most useful when they include a stated resolution, preset, or frame rate. For example, PlayStation’s official PC requirements for Returnal distinguish three targets rather than leaving “minimum” and “recommended” unexplained:

#1 Best Overall
CyberPowerPC Gaming PC, AMD Ryzen 7 8700F, GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB
  • System: AMD Ryzen 7 8700F 4.1GHz 8 Cores | AMD B850 Chipset | 16GB DDR5 | 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 2x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 2 x USB-C 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 2 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 6 | Bluetooth 5.3 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
Returnal tier Published performance target
Minimum Average 720p at 60 fps on Low
Medium Average 1080p at 60 fps on Medium
Recommended Average 1080p at 60 fps on High

These are the targets PlayStation lists for Returnal, not a guarantee for other games or PCs. When a game provides no comparable target, use its listed hardware tiers as guidance rather than translating “recommended” into an unstated frame rate. See Returnal’s official PC requirements.

Examples show why requirements are game-specific

Last Epoch: a useful action RPG comparison, not a genre standard

Steam’s current Last Epoch page lists 8 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580 with 6 GB VRAM at minimum; its recommended tier lists 16 GB RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 3060 or AMD RX 6600-XT. Both tiers specify DirectX 11 and 22 GB of storage, and the page strongly recommends an SSD. These published specifications belong to Last Epoch and should not be treated as requirements for an unnamed game. The page records Early Access beginning April 30, 2019, and full release on February 21, 2024, so it is a genre-related comparison, not an example of a game currently in early access. See Last Epoch on Steam.

Baldur’s Gate 3: storage and settings can matter as much as headline specs

Larian’s Windows requirements list 150 GB on an SSD for Baldur’s Gate 3. Its minimum tier includes 8 GB RAM and a GTX 970 or RX 480 with 4 GB or more VRAM; the recommended tier includes 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2060 Super or RX 5700 XT with 8 GB or more VRAM. Larian says minimum specs can run the game on low to medium settings and advises lowering the graphics preset if the frame rate is low. The developer also states, “A solid-state drive (SSD) is required to play Baldur’s Gate 3, and we recommend you install it on yours.” That requirement applies to this game, not to every RPG. Read Larian’s Windows system requirements.

Choose a PC by matching its actual parts to the game

If you are shopping before settling on a specific game, a desktop with a dedicated GPU around the RTX 3060 or RX 6600-XT class and 16 GB RAM is a defensible starting category: those are parts named in Last Epoch’s recommended requirements. It is not a guarantee for another early-access RPG. Before buying, verify the exact PC’s CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, operating system, storage drive and available capacity against the intended game’s current requirements.

Once two candidate PCs meet the same target tier, compare their price, upgradeability, warranty, and cooling. Those factors can help choose between otherwise suitable machines, but they do not establish game performance by themselves.

Make the decision in order

  1. Choose the game and desired experience. Decide on resolution, graphics preset, and a frame-rate target that matters to you.
  2. Open the game’s official PC requirements. Prefer a developer page or official storefront listing, and check it near purchase.
  3. Select the closest performance tier. Use stated targets where available; do not assume a minimum tier means high settings or a particular frame rate.
  4. Check every component and constraint. Compare CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, operating system/API, storage type, and free capacity.
  5. Account for early access. Recheck requirements as the build changes, since a previous listing may no longer describe the current version.
  6. Compare suitable PCs on ownership factors. If both meet the chosen tier, weigh cost, upgrade options, warranty, and cooling.
