How to Compare a PC Game’s System Requirements With Your Hardware

Use the game publisher’s current requirements to compare your PC’s actual parts and software. Learn what minimum and recommended specs do—and do not—tell you.

Compare the game’s current publisher-listed minimum and recommended requirements with your PC’s actual components and software, one item at a time. Check the operating system, CPU, graphics card and its required features, RAM, and available storage. A match is a useful compatibility screen—not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image quality.

Find the game’s current requirements

Start with the game publisher’s support page or the game’s store listing, and use the requirements for the PC version you plan to play. Requirements are specific to each game. Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements page likewise directs users to the app publisher or manufacturer for an app’s requirements; Windows’ general requirements do not determine whether a particular game will run.

Locate both the minimum and recommended columns, then read any notes attached to them. If the publisher distinguishes editions, configurations, or performance targets, make sure you are comparing the one relevant to your game and PC.

Collect your PC’s matching details

Before comparing, identify the exact model or version for each item the game lists. Broad descriptions such as “gaming PC” or “NVIDIA graphics” are not specific enough to establish a match.

#1 Best Overall
CyberPowerPC Gaming PC, AMD Ryzen 7 8700F, GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB
  • System: AMD Ryzen 7 8700F 4.1GHz 8 Cores | AMD B850 Chipset | 16GB DDR5 | 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 2x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 2 x USB-C 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 2 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 6 | Bluetooth 5.3 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
  • Operating system: Check the required Windows version and, if specified, architecture or other software conditions.
  • CPU: Note the processor’s full model name.
  • Graphics card: Record the GPU model, and separately check any required graphics features.
  • Memory: Compare installed system RAM with the stated amount. Note any caveat about graphics memory or a particular GPU configuration.
  • Storage: Compare the game’s stated storage requirement with the space currently available on the drive where you intend to install it.

There is no single verified click-by-click path here for finding every PC detail, so use your operating system’s device information or the computer and component makers’ documentation rather than relying on unverified menu directions.

Compare each requirement with both tiers

Work down the publisher’s list and compare each component against minimum and recommended separately. Minimum is the publisher’s stated lower requirement; it does not by itself promise smooth play or a specific graphics setting. Recommended is a separate, generally higher target. Treat any accompanying resolution, frame rate, preset, or configuration notes as part of that target—not as a guarantee for every computer that meets the listed parts.

For example, Square Enix’s support page for a PC Steam game includes a performance condition beginning “60 FPS @ 1920×1080, Preset ‘Highest’” and a note that system RAM may be 16GB when running on Intel GPU. That is an example tied to that publisher’s listing, not a general target for other games. Read the full current notes on the relevant game page before drawing a conclusion.

Check graphics features, not just the GPU name

A graphics card’s model and a DirectX version alone may not establish that it supports every feature a game requires. Steam notes that games may also need pixel shader support. If a requirement names DirectX, shaders, or another graphics feature, verify that feature against the graphics card maker’s specifications; do not assume that matching the DirectX version settles the question.

Similarly named or nearby CPU and GPU models are not automatically equivalent. There is no universal cross-vendor conversion formula that can confirm an unlisted processor or graphics card will perform like the listed one. If the model is not listed, a reliable benchmark comparison can add context only when it matches the game, settings, resolution, and date; it still does not establish a guaranteed result for your PC.

Interpret a shortfall and decide what to do next

If one or more components fall below minimum, or a required feature is missing, treat that as a warning rather than assuming the game will work as intended. If the PC meets minimum but not recommended, the published requirements do not establish the performance or quality you will get. Even a full match is not a promise of an exact frame rate on your particular system.

Identify the specific mismatch before considering an upgrade. Steam says, “If your system does not meet the game’s requirements, you may need to upgrade to the appropriate hardware.” Which part is appropriate to upgrade depends on the game’s requirement and your current configuration; a generic recommendation to buy a CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage drive cannot be made without those details. Steam also cautions that outdated drivers may not make full use of hardware and can reduce FPS, so check for current drivers from the component maker if performance is lower than expected.
