For METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 on PC/Steam, choose an Xbox-style controller that exposes XInput. Konami’s Steam requirements say an “Xinput Controller required,” and the game requires a controller to play. An Xbox controller is the lowest-risk choice. A DualSense or DualShock 4 can also work, but the official Steam listing specifies USB-only support for both PlayStation controller families.
What this recommendation covers
This guide is about the PC/Steam release of METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1, which brings the cited Metal Gear Solid games together in one collection. It does not claim that every older standalone port, emulator, or console version has identical controller behavior. The requirements and compatibility statements here come from Konami’s Steam system-requirements page, the official Steam store listing, Konami’s online manual, and Konami’s product page.

The practical buying order is straightforward: confirm XInput support first, choose the button layout you understand best, decide whether a cable is acceptable, and only then compare shape, price, or features. If you already own a controller that satisfies those conditions, replacing it is unnecessary.

Why XInput is the deciding requirement
Konami’s Steam system requirements use the exact wording “Xinput Controller required.” That is the most important compatibility signal for a purchase. XInput is the controller interface commonly used by Windows games to identify Xbox-style pads and their buttons. A controller can have a familiar shape or advertise broad PC compatibility yet still fail to expose the interface the game expects, so the model’s documentation should explicitly mention XInput or Xbox-mode support.
Konami also states that Vol. 1 requires a controller in order to play. Keyboard and mouse ownership alone therefore does not satisfy the cited Steam release’s requirement. You should have the controller connected and recognized before troubleshooting in-game input.
The requirement is about the interface, not a particular manufacturer. A first-party Xbox pad is one way to meet it, but a third-party PC controller can be considered if its exact model offers an XInput mode. Do not assume that a controller marked only “DirectInput,” “Switch mode,” or “mobile compatible” will meet the requirement.

| Choice | Best for | Documented constraint | Practical verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox-style XInput controller | Players who want the lowest setup risk and conventional Windows support | Matches Konami’s XInput requirement; Xbox Controllers are listed as supported on Steam | Default pick |
| Sony DualSense | Players who prefer the PlayStation shape and button placement | The official Steam listing specifies USB-only support | Strong alternative when you are comfortable using a cable |
| Sony DualShock 4 | Owners of an existing PS4 controller | The official Steam listing specifies USB-only support | Use an existing pad; buy one only if its layout is your clear preference |
| Other third-party PC pads | Buyers comparing shape or price | The exact model must expose XInput; no universal behavior is established | Consider after checking the manufacturer’s specifications |
Why an Xbox-style XInput controller is the default
It directly matches the stated requirement
The official requirement and the official Steam listing point in the same direction: XInput is required, and Xbox Controllers are supported. That removes an extra compatibility question during installation. You still need Windows to recognize the device, but you are starting with the interface Konami identifies.
Button labels are easy to map
Xbox-style pads label their face buttons A, B, X, and Y. Those labels are the convention most Windows games use when they display controller prompts. Even when you know the correct action by position rather than letter, matching the on-screen prompt to the device avoids translating between two labeling systems.
It is the safest choice for a new purchase
If you do not already own a controller, an XInput pad avoids spending money on a device that may need a translation layer or special configuration. The recommendation is about reducing setup uncertainty, not claiming that every Xbox-style model has the same comfort, wireless range, vibration, battery life, or durability. The available official material does not provide model-by-model testing for those characteristics.

Using a DualSense or DualShock 4
PlayStation-layout controllers are viable alternatives for this collection when used within the documented connection condition. The Steam listing names both “DualShock Controllers (USB Only)” and “DualSense Controllers (USB Only).” In practical terms, plan to connect either controller to the PC with a USB data cable rather than assuming Bluetooth will be accepted by the game.

A DualSense makes sense for someone who is accustomed to its analog-stick arrangement, face-button symbols, and overall hand position. It is also reasonable if you already use one for other PC games and do not want a second controller. The decisive compromise is the USB-only condition in the listing. Keep a suitable data cable available and connect it before launching the collection.
DualShock 4: sensible for existing PS4 owners
A DualShock 4 can be a practical reuse purchase when it is already in your drawer and works reliably. Its documented path is the same: USB connection. Buying a new one solely because it is inexpensive is less compelling if you would then need to resolve a different input mode or unfamiliar compatibility behavior. Check the exact controller and cable before deciding.
What USB-only does and does not establish
USB-only is the connection condition stated by the Steam listing for these PlayStation families. It does not establish a universal rule for every wireless adapter, operating-system configuration, or third-party remapping utility. Wireless behavior beyond that label is model- and configuration-dependent, so treat a wireless success reported for another game as insufficient evidence for this collection.
How to evaluate a third-party PC controller
Third-party controllers can be worthwhile when you need a particular shape, a lower-cost option, or a wired design. The collection’s requirement means compatibility research should come before cosmetic or feature comparisons.
- Identify the exact model number. “PC compatible” is too broad; different revisions of one product line can expose different modes.
- Find the manufacturer’s input-mode specification. Look for explicit XInput, Xbox mode, or an X/D switch that places the pad in XInput mode.
- Check the connection method. A wired USB model is the simplest configuration to verify. For wireless models, confirm how the device presents itself to Windows and whether the manufacturer documents XInput operation in that mode.
- Confirm that the controller can be switched before launch. If the device has multiple modes, select XInput first, then reconnect it if the manufacturer instructs you to do so.
- Keep the purchase reversible. Compatibility is the first test. Do not judge a model only by its shape or advertised platform list until Windows and the game recognize its inputs.
Konami’s official material does not rank third-party models by latency, battery life, vibration, durability, or long-session comfort. Those are legitimate personal buying criteria, but they require separate model-specific evidence.

Layout, connection, and ownership: the decision framework
1. Start with the interface
Choose XInput unless you are deliberately selecting a DualSense or DualShock 4 under the Steam listing’s USB-only condition. Interface compatibility outranks color, extra buttons, lighting, or a claimed console association.
2. Choose the layout your hands already know
Xbox and PlayStation pads place their analog sticks and label their face buttons differently. Neither layout is declared superior by Konami’s documentation. Familiarity matters because it reduces the need to look down when the game displays a button prompt. If you regularly play on Xbox-style hardware, stay with that arrangement; if PlayStation controls are your established muscle memory, a wired DualSense or DualShock can be reasonable.
3. Decide whether a cable is acceptable
An Xbox-style XInput controller gives you the broadest default path from the documented requirements. A DualSense or DualShock 4 requires you to accept the official USB-only condition. Treat a cable as part of the controller choice, not as an afterthought: verify that you have a USB data cable long enough for your seating position and that the PC has a suitable port.
4. Account for what you already own
Ownership changes the value calculation. A working XInput pad you already have is the obvious first test. An existing DualSense or DualShock 4 may also be enough if you are happy to play over USB. Buying a second controller makes sense only when your current device fails the interface or connection requirement, is uncomfortable, or is unavailable when you play.
Connection choices: wired first, wireless only with evidence
For this collection, wired connection is the clearest path when using a PlayStation controller because the official listing labels those controllers USB-only. It also gives you one fewer variable when diagnosing input: the device is physically attached, and you can concentrate on whether Windows and the game identify its mode correctly.
An Xbox-style controller can be sold in wired or wireless forms, but the cited official material does not establish a universal wireless result for every model. The safe buying question is not “Is wireless supported in general?” It is “Does this exact controller expose XInput in the connection mode I intend to use?” Check the manufacturer’s manual or specifications and be prepared to test the wired mode first.

Use this sequence to avoid changing several variables at once.
- Connect the controller before starting the game. Use USB for a DualSense or DualShock 4 because the Steam listing specifies that connection.
- Put a multi-mode controller in XInput mode. Follow the exact switch or button procedure in that model’s documentation. If it has no documented XInput mode, treat it as an uncertain purchase for this game.
- Let Windows finish detecting the device. Confirm that the controller appears as an input device before launching the collection. If it is not detected by the operating system, the game cannot solve that lower-level problem.
- Launch the Steam version of Vol. 1. The cited requirement applies to this release, so test the same edition you intend to play.
- Use the controller settings described in Konami’s official online manual. The manual documents the Steam version and its controller settings. Keep it available when you need to identify an in-game option rather than guessing at a label.
- Test buttons and sticks in a quiet menu area. Verify movement, camera control, face buttons, shoulder buttons, and menu navigation before beginning a mission. This separates a connection problem from a preference problem.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game does not respond at all
- Disconnect other gamepads and reconnect the one you intend to use.
- For a third-party device, verify that its physical or software mode is XInput.
- For a DualSense or DualShock 4, replace a charge-only cable with a USB data cable and reconnect it before relaunching.
- Confirm that Windows detects the controller. If it does not, resolve the cable, port, driver, or device issue outside the game first.
The controller works in Windows but not in the collection
- Check the model’s selected input mode again; detection alone does not prove that it is presenting XInput.
- Close the game, reconnect the controller, and launch again so the game sees the intended device from startup.
- Consult Konami’s Steam manual for the controller-settings screen instead of assuming another game’s configuration applies.
Prompts do not match the buttons you are pressing
First distinguish a real input failure from a label mismatch. Xbox-style and PlayStation controllers use different face-button letters or symbols. If every action works but the labels feel reversed, use the layout you know and refer to the game’s displayed prompt positions; do not replace a functioning controller solely because its markings differ.
A wireless PlayStation controller works intermittently
The official listing’s USB-only wording means the reliable diagnostic step is to connect the DualSense or DualShock 4 by USB. If the wired connection works, the wireless path is a configuration issue outside the documented support condition, not proof that the controller itself is incompatible.

- Buying by console branding alone: a controller associated with a console is not automatically an XInput device on Windows.
- Ignoring the exact model: two pads with similar names can expose different input modes.
- Assuming Bluetooth is interchangeable with USB: the Steam listing specifically qualifies DualSense and DualShock support as USB-only.
- Overvaluing unmeasured features: there are no official model-by-model measurements here for latency, battery, vibration, or durability.
- Replacing a suitable controller unnecessarily: if your existing pad is XInput, recognized by Windows, and comfortable, it already meets the central buying test.
- Testing only after a long installation: connect and verify the controller before starting a campaign so a compatibility issue is found early.
Which controller should each player choose?
You are buying your first PC controller
Choose an Xbox-style XInput controller. It follows the explicit requirement and the Xbox support named by Steam, while avoiding the USB-only condition attached to the PlayStation alternatives.
You own a DualSense and prefer PlayStation controls
Keep it and use a USB data connection. The official listing names DualSense support with that connection condition, so there is no need to purchase an Xbox pad solely for button labels.

You own a DualShock 4
Use the existing controller over USB if its condition is good and its layout is comfortable. Buy another pad only if the current one is unreliable or you specifically want XInput convenience.
You want a low-cost third-party pad
Compare only models whose documentation explicitly confirms XInput. Treat all other platform claims as secondary until the input mode is established.
You insist on wireless play
Start with an Xbox-style controller whose exact wireless mode is documented as XInput. For DualSense and DualShock 4, plan around USB because that is the support condition stated on the Steam listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the official documentation does—and does not—promise
Konami’s Steam system-requirements page establishes two decisive facts: an XInput controller is required, and Vol. 1 requires a controller to play. The official Steam listing identifies Xbox Controllers as supported, recommends playing with a controller, and lists DualShock and DualSense controllers with USB-only qualifications. Konami’s online manual covers the Steam version and controller settings, while Konami’s product page lists Vol. 1 for PC/Steam.
Those sources support a compatibility decision, not a performance ranking. They do not provide controlled tests comparing individual controller models, measured input latency, battery-life figures, vibration behavior, or durability results. Wireless performance outside the stated USB-only labels remains dependent on the specific model and configuration.
Bottom line for a purchase decision
Buy an Xbox-style XInput controller if you want the least complicated path to METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 on Steam. Choose a DualSense or DualShock 4 when you already prefer that layout and can play over USB. Consider another third-party pad only after its exact model’s XInput support is confirmed. That order—interface, layout, connection, then ownership and personal preferences—keeps the decision aligned with the requirements that are actually documented.
