Choose a route by measuring from the Australian locations your users actually connect from to the live application endpoints—not by picking the nearest city, cloud region, or ISP. Compare round-trip latency, jitter, packet loss, throughput, path stability, failure resilience, and recurring cost at different times. The fastest option can vary by user location and destination.
What makes a route the right choice?
“Fastest” should mean more than the lowest single ping. A route with a good average can still produce a poor experience if latency spikes, packets are lost, or performance collapses under load. Evaluate each candidate against the app’s needs and the locations of its users.

- Round-trip latency: how long a request and response take between a user location and the actual service endpoint.
- Jitter: how much latency varies over time, especially important for interactive voice, video, and gaming.
- Packet loss: whether packets fail to reach their destination, which can trigger retransmissions or interruptions.
- Throughput: whether the path can handle expected traffic, including peak demand.
- Path stability and resilience: whether routes change unexpectedly and whether service remains usable when a link or provider fails.
- Cost: the recurring expense of transit, peering, hosting, or a multi-region design.
There may be no single national winner: a route that works well for users in Perth may not be best for users in Sydney.
How to measure routes for your app
1. Choose representative source locations and real destinations
List the cities or regions that matter to your users, then test from networks representative of those users. The destination should be the live service or a candidate deployment endpoint—not merely a nearby cloud region or a generic speed-test server. AWS’s 4 August 2026 guide to measuring latency before deployment recommends AWS-maintained regional EC2 reachability targets and carrier looking glass tools. These can help compare locations and inspect network paths, but an AWS target is an indicator, not a replacement for testing your intended application endpoint.

2. Test at multiple times and under realistic conditions
Record measurements in the time windows your app must serve, including busy periods. Compare latency, variation, packet loss, throughput under expected load, path changes, resilience during failures, and recurring cost for each candidate. Keep results separated by source location and time window; a single ping or national average can conceal meaningful differences.
3. Inspect the path when results look unexpected
Traceroute can help distinguish latency associated with distance from delay introduced by routing choices. A geographically close destination is not necessarily reached by a short or efficient network path. If a route looks inflated, use the path information alongside repeated end-to-end measurements rather than treating one traceroute as a complete performance verdict.

Why city and cloud-region proximity can mislead
Geography is only one factor: routing, interconnection, congestion, and the actual endpoint all affect observed performance. AWS explicitly cautions that its Route 53 latency data is based on traffic between users and AWS data centres and may differ significantly for other resources, even in the same city. Its documentation states: “If you aren’t using resources in an AWS Region, the actual latency between your users and your resources can vary significantly from AWS latency data.” See Amazon Route 53 latency-based routing documentation.

That limitation matters when choosing between providers or deciding where to deploy a non-AWS workload: provider latency figures describe the endpoints and traffic they measure, not a universal ranking of routes to arbitrary services.

When peering may help
Peering is a network-level arrangement in which networks exchange traffic directly, rather than relying entirely on transit through another network. IX Australia lists exchanges in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney, with presence in 27 data centres. Its peering information describes the service and membership considerations. The peer directory lists service providers, cloud platforms, and content networks, but says the published list is not exhaustive.
Those locations establish where exchanges are available, not whether a particular peering connection will improve your app’s route. The benefit depends on your network, the counterparties involved, traffic patterns, and the route your users currently take. Network operators, ISPs, content providers, and enterprises with substantial traffic may find direct peering worth evaluating. An app team that does not operate its own network should ask its ISP or hosting provider whether it offers direct or virtual peering; IX Australia notes that virtual peering may be available through an existing connectivity provider.

Using cloud regions and latency-aware DNS
If your service is deployed in multiple AWS Regions, Route 53 latency-based routing can direct a DNS query to the configured AWS Region with the lowest AWS-measured latency for that user. It is a way to choose among configured AWS destinations, not a general route selector for any provider or third-party endpoint. Measure performance to the actual workload first, and account for application behaviour, data placement, and failure handling when deciding whether a multi-region design is appropriate.

That statement describes Microsoft’s network design; it does not establish that a specific Microsoft route will be faster for a particular Australian audience or application.

How to interpret Australian broadband averages
The ACCC’s Broadband performance data includes observations through March 2026. For NBN fixed wireless, it reports average latency of 41.7 ms across all hours and 43.5 ms during busy hours. These are averages for a service technology, not a ranking of routes to a particular app, ISP, or server. Use them as broad context, not as a substitute for testing from your users’ networks to your endpoint.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Define the user locations and the live or candidate application endpoints that matter.
- Test multiple times of day and record latency, jitter, packet loss, throughput, path changes, failure resilience, and cost.
- Compare results separately by source location; avoid choosing from a single national average.
- Use provider reachability targets and looking glass tools to investigate paths, then validate with end-to-end app measurements.
- Consider peering or virtual peering only if your organization’s network, traffic, and provider relationships make it practical.
- For multi-region cloud deployments, verify that latency-aware DNS is measuring the endpoints relevant to your service.
