PSP vs. PlayStation Vita: Which Sony Handheld Is Right for You?

Choose a PSP if you want to play physical UMD discs. Choose a PlayStation Vita if you want Vita game cards, a second analog stick, and—on the original model—a larger, higher-resolution OLED screen, and the PSP games you want are supported digitally. A Vita cannot play UMDs. Digital access also matters: Sony says Vita Store purchases will end in each region starting July 2027, while PSP commerce functionality ended in 2021.

Start with the games and formats you want

The most important difference is how each handheld plays games. A PSP with a UMD drive reads PSP discs; a Vita uses its own game cards and can run digital Vita games. These formats are not interchangeable.

  • Already own PSP UMDs? You need a PSP model with a UMD drive. The PSP Go is digital-only and has no UMD drive.
  • Want Vita games? Choose a Vita, which supports Vita game cards and digital Vita games.
  • Want PSP games on a Vita? Some PSP titles are supported digitally, but the Vita cannot read the disc. Compatibility and download or transfer availability vary by title.

Sony’s Vita compatibility guidance says some PSP software is incompatible or cannot be downloaded or copied to the system. Owning a UMD does not give you a digital copy for Vita.

How the hardware compares

Feature PSP-2000 Original Vita OLED model
Game media UMD discs; Memory Stick PRO Duo storage Vita game cards and digital downloads
Display 4.3-inch TFT, 480×272 pixels 5-inch OLED, 960×544 pixels
Analog controls One analog stick Two analog sticks
Other controls Directional buttons and face buttons Front multi-touch screen and rear multi-touch pad
Weight Approximately 189 g including battery, according to Sony Not stated here for direct comparison

These are model-specific manufacturer specifications, not measurements of every revision or an independent screen-quality test. Sony’s PSP-2000 specifications list its display, UMD drive, Wi-Fi, stereo speakers, and Memory Stick PRO Duo slot. Sony’s Vita FAQ describes the original Vita OLED display as 5 inches, 960×544 pixels, and approximately 16.77 million colors.

Controls and playing PSP games on Vita

The Vita’s second analog stick can be assigned to PSP controls for supported PSP software. That can be useful in games designed around one stick, but it does not make every PSP title compatible or guarantee a better control scheme. Sony also documents optional bilinear filtering for PSP games; results differ by game, and some may still look rough or show little visible improvement.

The original Vita also has a front touch display and rear touch pad. Those are additional inputs, not a replacement for checking whether a particular game’s controls suit you.

Digital purchases and the Vita Store deadline

Sony’s current PlayStation Store notice says: “Starting July 2027, the PlayStation Store will close on PS3 and PS Vita in your region.” After the applicable regional closure, new purchases through the Store on those devices will no longer be possible. Check Sony’s notice for the relevant region and date before relying on a purchase being available.

This concerns new purchases; it does not mean all previously acquired content stops working. Sony’s notice distinguishes the Store closure from access to content users already own. In 2021, Sony said the PS3 and Vita stores would remain open, while PSP commerce functionality would retire on July 2, 2021. That was a historical decision; the current notice governs future Vita purchases.

For PSP games on Vita, Sony’s FAQ described supported digital PSP titles as downloadable on Vita when included on its supported-title list. The user guide also warns that some titles cannot be downloaded or copied. Check the specific game and your region’s current availability rather than assuming the entire PSP library is accessible.

Which one should you buy?

Choose a PSP if UMD discs are the priority

A PSP with a UMD drive is the direct choice for a physical PSP disc collection. Confirm the listing is not a PSP Go, which has no disc drive. The PSP-2000 is one UMD-capable revision; check the exact model rather than assuming every PSP has identical features.

Rank #4

Choose a Vita for Vita cards and a second stick

A Vita makes sense if you want to play Vita-format games, value the second analog stick, or want one device for Vita games and the PSP titles that Sony supports digitally. It will not play PSP UMDs, and digital PSP compatibility is title-specific.

Check storage and condition on a used unit

Before buying, verify the console model, included charger and storage, and condition of the screen, battery, buttons, and analog sticks. For a PSP, inspect the UMD door and confirm it reads discs if that is why you are buying it. For a Vita, confirm whether a memory card is included: Sony says PSP game saves use a memory card, and its guide notes a card requirement for the PCH-1000 series. Storage needs vary by model and use. Also check whether games pictured in a listing are actually included. These are practical inspection checks, not claims about failure rates.
