How to Choose a NEAR Wallet for Onchain Trading

Choose a NEAR wallet around the trading app and route you plan to use. Compare dApp support, cross-chain compatibility, custody, recovery, and signing options.

Choose a NEAR wallet by matching it to the trading route you plan to use: a wallet that connects to NEAR dApps, a wallet that supports a particular cross-chain swap, and an account for perpetual trading are not interchangeable. Compare supported apps and assets, device access, custody and recovery, then confirm current compatibility before transferring funds.

Start with the trading route

“Onchain trading” can mean different things on NEAR. A spot swap in a NEAR dApp, a swap that crosses chains, and a perpetual contract each involve different applications and integrations. First identify the app and assets you want to use; then choose a wallet that the app currently supports.

NEAR-native dApps and spot swaps

If you expect to use NEAR applications, prioritize a wallet that connects to the specific dApps you plan to trade through and can handle the assets involved. The ecosystem’s wallet directory lists options including NEAR Mobile, Meteor, HOT, Intear, Nightly, Sweat, and Ethereum wallets. The listing is a starting point, not a guarantee that every listed wallet supports every asset or application. Check the current NEAR ecosystem wallet directory and the dApp’s own connection instructions.

Cross-chain swaps

NEAR Intents describes a liquidity and execution layer for cross-chain swaps. That does not mean every NEAR wallet supports every Intents route: wallet connectivity and the swap service are separate compatibility checks. Confirm that your chosen wallet supports the exact route, chains, and assets you intend to use on both the wallet and application pages. See NEAR Intents.

Perpetual contracts

For perpetuals, near.com describes a dedicated route to trading on Hyperliquid, with sign-in using a wallet or passkey. Its page says transactions are signed on the user’s device and settled onchain through NEAR Intents. Treat this as a specialized product, not a feature automatically provided by NEAR wallets or a synonym for spot swaps. Check current product availability and jurisdictional access at near.com’s perps page.

Compare wallet options by what they actually support

The ecosystem directory describes different platforms and advertised features. Those descriptions are provided by the ecosystem and wallet services; they are not independent security testing. Use them to shortlist options, then verify the details for your intended trading route.

NEAR Mobile Self-custodial; available on iOS and Android; supports NEAR, staking, and gasless cross-chain swaps powered by NEAR Intents. Whether it supports the specific dApp, assets, and swap route you plan to use.
Meteor Wallet Zero-fee swaps and cross-chain bridging; available on web, extension, and mobile. Which assets and routes are currently available, and whether your target dApp accepts it.
HOT, Intear, Nightly, Sweat, and Ethereum wallets Listed in the NEAR ecosystem wallet directory. Current platform availability, custody and recovery options, supported assets, and compatibility with your intended dApps or trading route.

Feature labels such as “zero-fee” or “gasless” describe a service claim, not necessarily the full cost or conditions of a trade. Review the route and transaction details before signing.

Choose a device you can use reliably

Wallets may be available through a browser, extension, mobile app, or other interface. Choose one that fits how you plan to connect to trading applications, and confirm that the app supports your device and operating system. A wallet appearing in an ecosystem directory does not establish that it works with every browser or dApp.

Understand who controls the keys and how you recover access

NEAR Mobile is described as self-custodial. For any wallet, understand how its keys are controlled, what recovery method you must preserve, and what happens if you lose access to your device. Do not assume that another wallet’s recovery process applies to the one you select.

The former wallet.near.org web wallet is now presented as a gateway to the NEAR wallet ecosystem. Its page directs previous users to import their account into a new wallet; it notes that email or text-message recovery defaults to app.mynearwallet.com. Follow the current instructions on the NEAR wallet page rather than assuming the former interface remains the active destination.

Consider hardware signing for added key protection

Ledger says its hardware wallets support NEAR and that the device stores private keys and signs transactions offline. It also notes that buy, send/receive, swap, stake, and other transaction services are provided by third parties and may vary by territory. Before buying, confirm that the exact device model works with the wallet and applications you intend to use on Ledger’s NEAR support page. A hardware wallet does not remove trading, phishing, recovery, or smart-contract risks.

The historical NEAR browser-wallet repository describes localStorage key storage and warns against using that implementation as the only signer for high-value accounts. That warning concerns the legacy wallet implementation, not a current security audit of wallets now listed by the ecosystem. See the NEAR wallet repository.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Name the route: decide whether you need a NEAR dApp connection, a cross-chain swap, or perpetual trading.
  2. Check the application: confirm which wallets it accepts and whether it supports your assets and chains.
  3. Check the wallet: verify its current platform, custody and recovery model, and specific route support using its official information.
  4. Decide how you will sign: choose software signing or verify hardware-device and wallet compatibility before purchase.
  5. Review the transaction: check the displayed asset, destination, route, and transaction details before approving anything.

Common selection mistakes

  • Assuming “NEAR wallet” means universal compatibility: support for NEAR does not establish support for every token, chain, dApp, or trading product.
  • Confusing a swap protocol with a wallet: NEAR Intents describes cross-chain liquidity and execution; your wallet still needs to connect to the route you want.
  • Treating perps as ordinary swaps: near.com’s Hyperliquid route is a specialized perpetual-trading offering, with its own availability and access considerations.
  • Relying on an old wallet address or interface: use the current migration guidance on the NEAR ecosystem page for legacy-account imports.
  • Assuming hardware support is universal: compatibility can depend on the particular device, wallet integration, service, and territory.
