Count simultaneous players, not the size of your friend list
A four-person group has different needs from a rotating community of 20. Small groups can share one hosted survival world or a private cooperative session. Larger groups need to ask whether everyone must appear in the same instance, whether some players can work asynchronously, and whether the game’s documented limits apply to the activity they care about.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If attendance varies, a persistent MMO can absorb absences better than a campaign that depends on one host. Conversely, a private sandbox is easier when the same few people meet at a reliable time and want direct control over the world.
Decide whether the world should remember your decisions
Persistence means more than saving a character. In a persistent world, markets, alliances, territory, reputation, industrial infrastructure, and conflicts continue while an individual player is offline. EVE Online is built around that model. Space Engineers can preserve a shared save or dedicated-server world, but your group controls the rules and can restart or change the scenario. No Man’s Sky and Elite Dangerous provide ongoing universes, while the practical consequences of one group’s actions vary by activity and mode.
Choose one primary activity
- Construction and engineering: pick Space Engineers if the design process itself is the main attraction.
- Exploration and relaxed co-op: pick No Man’s Sky if you want planets, bases, and missions with less administrative overhead.
- Economy, corporations, and conflict: pick EVE Online if the group enjoys organization, risk, and social strategy.
- Piloting and travel: pick Elite Dangerous if flight technique, navigation, and the scale of the galaxy matter most.
Set your acceptable level of social pressure
Private or friends-only settings protect a group that wants to experiment without interruption. Cooperative missions provide a middle ground: the game supplies objectives while the group remains focused on teamwork. Open PvP and player markets create stories that a private server cannot, but they also introduce loss, scouting, scheduling, and diplomacy. Agree in advance whether unexpected encounters are exciting or exhausting.
Check platform and control compatibility
Every player should verify the current edition, platform, input method, and cross-platform rules before purchase. The cited material gives specific capacity figures for particular versions, but it does not establish a universal cross-play matrix. Do not assume that a PC save, console player, or dedicated server can join every other edition. Make a single test session part of your buying decision.

Space Engineers: choose it for building together
What the game is built around
Keen Software House defines Space Engineers as an open-world sandbox game about creativity and exploration. Players construct ships, stations, and planetary outposts, pilot vessels, gather resources, and survive. The game supports creative and survival modes, cooperative and competitive multiplayer, privacy settings from offline to public, and dedicated servers. Its Steam classification adds sandbox, simulation, open-world multiplayer, co-op, PvP, modding, and Steam Workshop support.
Why a small group may love it
Construction gives every player a concrete job: one person lays out a hull, another manages power and production, another scouts for resources, and another tests the vehicle. Because the group defines its own objectives, a session can be a calm design workshop, a survival expedition, or an engineering challenge. Failure is informative: a badly balanced craft, weak conveyor network, or inadequate power system becomes a problem the team can diagnose together.
What to agree on before starting
- Mode: Creative removes resource pressure and is ideal for learning blocks and controls. Survival makes logistics, mining, power, oxygen, and repair part of the game.
- World ownership: Decide who hosts, where the save lives, and how backups are handled. A dedicated server is useful when the world must be available without the original host.
- Design rules: Set expectations for mods, blueprints, scripts, PvP damage, and whether players may dismantle one another’s work.
- Project scope: Begin with one ship, station, or outpost rather than an entire planetary city. Large builds expose performance and coordination problems early.
A practical first session
- Create a private survival or creative world and invite only the intended group.
- Assign a shared base location with access to the resources your chosen scenario requires.
- Build a small, functional vehicle before attempting a large capital ship: include power, storage, control, and a way to repair it.
- Test every player’s ability to interact with inventories, production blocks, ownership, and permissions.
- Save, close, and reopen the world so the group knows who can restore it if the host disconnects.
Choose Space Engineers when the group is happy to learn construction systems and manage a shared project. Choose something else if players mainly want guided missions, minimal setup, or immediate action.
No Man’s Sky: choose it for exploration and accessible co-op
How multiplayer is organized
Hello Games’ Beyond documentation describes the Space Anomaly as a social hub that can hold 16 players on all platforms. The same release documents network maximums of 8 players on console and 32 on PC, and says multiplayer missions are initialized from the Nexus. Those numbers belong to the documented release; check the current platform build before planning a large group event.

Why it suits mixed-experience groups
No Man’s Sky lets players pursue different goals while remaining in the same broad adventure: one person can scan life, another can gather materials for a base, and others can follow a mission from the Nexus. Exploration and base building provide visible progress without requiring every player to master a complex engineering chain. The social hub gives a group a meeting point before it disperses to planets or missions.
Limits to understand
- Instance versus universe: a large shared universe does not mean every player is physically present in one local session. Plan events around the documented network limits for your platform.
- Mission coordination: choose one player to start a Nexus mission and confirm that everyone has joined the same objective before leaving the Anomaly.
- Progress expectations: players at different points in the story or with different equipment may experience the same activity differently. Use exploration and base projects when the group’s progression is uneven.
- Version drift: features, caps, and cross-platform behavior can change. Recheck the current patch notes or platform documentation before organizing a recurring event.
A good first-night plan
- Meet in the Space Anomaly and confirm that every player can see the group and voice or text communications.
- Start one short Nexus mission rather than a long expedition, so the group can test joining, objectives, and rewards.
- After the mission, choose a nearby planet for a small shared base or resource project.
- Keep one optional activity open for players who finish early: scanning, photography, resource gathering, or local exploration.
Choose No Man’s Sky when the group wants space scenery, base projects, and cooperative objectives without committing to an MMO corporation or a physics-heavy construction curriculum.
EVE Online: choose it for a persistent social economy
What makes its sandbox different
The official EVE Online site describes an expanding sandbox with exploration, immense PvP and PvE battles, a thriving player economy, and more than 7,000 star systems. It lists war, politics, piracy, trading, and exploration as professions. The Epic Games listing calls it a free-to-play space MMO focused on mining, exploration, industry, and player battles, and records an 8,825-player conflict cited as a Guinness World Record.
What your group is signing up for
EVE is less like a private playground and more like joining an ecosystem. A corporation can specialize in mining, manufacturing, hauling, intelligence, fleet combat, or diplomacy. The group’s assets, routes, contracts, and relationships can matter even when individual members are offline. Loss is part of the economy, so replacing ships and planning safe logistics are social activities, not chores outside the game.

Preparation that prevents early burnout
- Pick a narrow first role: teach new players one activity, such as exploration or basic mining, before presenting the entire economy.
- Use a corporation structure: define who manages shared assets, who can access wallets or hangars, and how reimbursements work.
- Schedule fleets: give every operation a start time, destination, expected duration, and fallback plan.
- Explain risk: distinguish disposable ships from irreplaceable assets and never assume a new player understands what can be lost.
- Accept asymmetry: one player may enjoy markets while another prefers combat. Shared goals should not require identical careers.
Choose EVE Online when the group wants consequences that extend beyond a single evening and is willing to learn terminology, procedures, and social norms. It is a poor fit for players who want guaranteed safety, instant cooperation, or a self-contained private world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Elite Dangerous: choose it for piloting and galaxy-scale travel
The appeal of a connected galaxy
The Epic Games listing presents Elite Dangerous as a connected galaxy with the Milky Way recreated at 400 billion star systems. It emphasizes open-ended play and describes the game as a massively multiplayer space epic. The attraction is the act of flying: selecting a route, managing a ship, docking, carrying cargo or passengers, exploring unfamiliar systems, and deciding when to avoid or engage a threat.
How groups cooperate
A group can form a wing, travel together, escort a trader, run combat patrols, or compare discoveries while pursuing different careers. The shared experience comes from coordination and navigation rather than assembling one physical machine. That makes it a better fit than Space Engineers for players who want to operate ships, and a better fit than EVE for groups that prefer direct flight controls over corporate administration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to settle before purchase
- Control scheme: agree whether everyone is comfortable with keyboard, controller, or flight-stick inputs and the number of controls the game expects.
- Career focus: choose exploration, trading, combat, or a mixed itinerary for the first sessions.
- Travel time: galaxy-scale distance can turn navigation into the evening’s main activity. Set a destination that fits your available play window.
- Platform matrix: verify current platform support and feature availability, because the cited listing does not establish that every edition shares the same capabilities.
Choose Elite Dangerous when the group values the routine of flying and the perspective of a vast galaxy more than building structures or running a player-owned economy.
Best Value

Compare the four choices by decision axis
| Decision axis | Space Engineers | No Man’s Sky | EVE Online | Elite Dangerous |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary loop | Build, test, mine, survive | Explore, build bases, complete missions | Trade, produce, fight, organize | Fly, navigate, trade, explore, fight |
| Best session shape | Planned project with shared save | Drop-in exploration or a guided mission | Scheduled operations plus long-term goals | Route or expedition with coordinated travel |
| Persistence pressure | Set by the host or server rules | Ongoing universe with activity-dependent consequences | Very high; corporations and markets persist | High at the galaxy level; group consequences depend on activity |
| Social risk | Configurable from private co-op to PvP | Mostly cooperative in the described activities | Open competition, loss, politics, and diplomacy | Open-ended encounters and group coordination |
| Technical focus | Physics, systems, construction | Exploration systems and mission flow | Economy, fleet doctrine, information, logistics | Flight controls, outfitting, navigation |
A simple selection method for your group
- Write one sentence describing the ideal evening. For example: “We design a vehicle together,” “We explore and finish a mission,” “We make money and influence a corporation,” or “We fly a route and discover new systems.” Match that sentence to the game whose primary loop is closest.
- Mark your persistence requirement. If the world must keep developing while members are absent, favor EVE Online or an intentionally maintained shared world. If every session should stand alone, favor a private or mission-based structure.
- Set a PvP boundary. Decide whether unexpected player attacks are welcome, tolerated only in specific events, or unacceptable. This single answer can eliminate an otherwise attractive MMO.
- Choose a learning budget. Give the group a rating from one (minimal onboarding) to five (willing to study systems and procedures). Construction and MMO games reward higher ratings; exploration-focused co-op is easier to enter.
- Verify the platform intersection. List each player’s platform and edition, then confirm that the current build supports the intended session and player count.
- Run a two-hour trial. End the trial by asking what players actually did, not what they expected to do. If half the group spent the session waiting for instructions or fighting the controls, switch games before investing in a long-term world.
First-session checklist
- Install the same current version or compatible edition.
- Confirm voice communication and a backup text channel.
- Choose a host, server, or meeting location and record how others reconnect.
- Agree on a start and stop time; persistent games can otherwise consume the entire evening.
- Give every player one role and one optional task.
- Use a reversible objective: a short mission, a small base, a local route, or a disposable ship.
- Make a screenshot or written note of the group’s destination, assets, and next step before leaving.
Common pitfalls and fixes
The group cannot agree on what “fun” means
Do not solve this with a vote on game titles. Vote on activities. Ask each player to rank building, exploration, combat, trading, progression, and social competition. Choose the game that satisfies the highest-ranked activity for the most people, then schedule optional side activities for minority interests.
One player becomes the permanent host or leader
Rotate hosting where the game allows it, use a dedicated server when appropriate, and document permissions and backups. In an MMO, rotate fleet leadership and administrative duties so the corporation does not depend on one person.
New players feel useless
Give beginners bounded jobs with visible outcomes: gather one resource, scan a route, deliver a component, or follow a short mission. Avoid assigning them a vague instruction such as “learn the systems.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The session is overwhelmed by setup
Start in creative mode, a tutorial, a short mission, or a low-risk local route. Defer mods, advanced industry, long expeditions, and competitive events until everyone can reconnect and perform the basic actions.
Player numbers exceed the documented cap
Split into scheduled groups, use separate objectives, or choose a game whose social model does not require everyone in one instance. Never plan an event around a capacity figure without checking the current platform build and activity-specific limit.
Bottom line
Pick Space Engineers when collaborative construction is the point. Pick No Man’s Sky when you want exploration, bases, and cooperative missions that welcome mixed experience levels. Pick EVE Online when your group wants a persistent economy and social conflict with real organizational demands. Pick Elite Dangerous when piloting, navigation, and the scale of a recreated galaxy matter more than building or market politics. A short trial session on the platform everyone actually owns is the most reliable final test.
