Choose a midrange Android phone by ranking what matters most to you—time between charges, screen comfort, or camera versatility—then compare models using the same evidence for each priority. The Google Pixel 9a and Samsung Galaxy A56 5G illustrate different trade-offs, but neither is a universal winner: manufacturer battery claims use different measures, camera specifications do not prove photo quality, and local price and availability can change the value calculation.
Start with your priorities, not a model name
Decide which compromise you would notice most in everyday use. If you often finish the day with little charge left, put battery evidence first. If you read or watch video for long stretches, weigh screen size and handling. If you take varied photos, compare camera roles and stabilisation, then look for independent sample comparisons made in conditions like yours.

Use the same categories for every phone on your shortlist. A larger battery number, higher camera megapixel count, or faster refresh rate is not by itself proof of the better experience.

- Battery: compare capacity, the manufacturer’s endurance claim and test description, charging options, and your own usage.
- Display: compare size, resolution, panel type, refresh-rate range, and any stated brightness figure.
- Camera: compare wide, ultrawide, or macro coverage; stabilisation; zoom type; and independent photo evidence.
- Value: compare dated local prices for the same storage configuration, along with warranty, network compatibility, and stock.
How to compare battery life fairly
Battery capacity, measured in mAh, describes stored charge; it does not promise a particular number of hours on screen. Actual endurance depends on factors such as signal strength, brightness, apps, video, gaming, and settings. Treat each manufacturer’s runtime statement as its own claim, not as a standardized head-to-head result.

| Phone and source | Capacity | Manufacturer endurance claim | Charging listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 9a, Google Store US specifications | Typical 5,100 mAh; minimum 5,000 mAh | 30+ hours of battery life; up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver | Fast charging and Qi-certified wireless charging |
| Samsung Galaxy A56 5G, Samsung Ireland specifications | Typical 5,000 mAh | Up to 29 hours of video playback | Not stated on the cited Ireland specification page |
These are regional manufacturer specifications, not independent lab results. Google’s general 30+ hour claim and Samsung’s up-to-29-hour video-playback claim describe different measures, so the numbers do not establish which phone lasts longer in the same use. Check the linked local product page for the exact variant and charging details available where you plan to buy.
Choose a screen for how you hold and use the phone
Screen size is a practical trade-off: a larger panel can feel more immersive for video and reading, while a smaller phone may be easier to handle. Resolution indicates pixel dimensions, and refresh rate indicates how often the display can update; neither alone establishes overall image quality or brightness.

| Phone and source | Screen size | Panel and resolution | Refresh rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 9a, Google Store US specifications | 6.3 inches | Actua pOLED, 1080 × 2424, 422.2 PPI | Smooth Display from 60 to 120 Hz |
| Samsung Galaxy A56 5G, Samsung UK specifications | 6.7 inches full rectangle; 6.5 inches accounting for rounded corners | FHD+ Super AMOLED, 1080 × 2340 | Up to 120 Hz |
Samsung’s listed full-rectangle and rounded-corner measurements use different ways of describing the screen area; the stated rounded-corner figure is smaller. Both manufacturers list support for up to 120 Hz, but Google specifies a 60–120 Hz range. Compare the feel and legibility in person if possible, and check for a brightness specification on the exact regional page rather than assuming one from panel type.

Compare camera coverage, not just megapixels
Megapixels describe image resolution, not whether a camera produces better photographs. Sensor and processing differences matter, and a list of camera modules cannot replace independent comparisons of real images in daylight, low light, portraits, and moving scenes.

| Phone and source | Rear camera specification | Stabilisation and zoom listed |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 9a, Google Store US specifications | 48 MP wide and 13 MP ultrawide | Optical and electronic stabilisation on the wide camera; Super Res Zoom up to 8x |
| Samsung Galaxy A56 5G, Samsung UK specifications | 50 MP wide, 12 MP ultrawide, and 5 MP macro | Optical image stabilisation listed; digital zoom up to 10x |
The A56 specification names a macro camera, while the Pixel listing describes wide and ultrawide rear cameras. The Pixel’s stated Super Res Zoom and Samsung’s stated digital zoom are different zoom descriptions, not equivalent optical-zoom claims. If zoom or close-up photography matters, seek independent samples at the focal lengths and distances you actually use; these specifications do not establish a photo-quality winner.

A specification advantage is not automatically a better buy. Prices, stock, storage options, warranty terms, and network compatibility depend on country and configuration. Google’s US product page listed the Pixel 9a at a $499 starting price and showed it out of stock when accessed on October 4, 2026; that is a time-sensitive US page snapshot, not a guaranteed current street price or a price comparison with Samsung.
