Start with the Ease of Use stars on the character-select screen, then match a hero’s range and pace to the way you enjoy fighting. Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine are the official beginner recommendations. Iron Man and Spider-Man are relatively easy to learn, while Storm and Danger demand a more advanced approach. You only need to master one character to play effectively: teammates support you through assists and team actions in the game’s 4v4 format.
What makes a good main in Marvel Tōkon?
Your main is the character whose movement, attacks and assist options you know well enough to make decisions under pressure. In MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, choosing one does not mean ignoring the rest of your team. The game is designed around mastering one character while teammates enter through assists and team actions, rather than requiring you to learn four complete move lists.

That design makes character choice more personal than a tier-list exercise. Official materials do not establish a strongest character, current matchup rankings or player-usage leaders. The useful questions are instead:

- How easy are the inputs and systems to operate?
- Do you prefer close pressure, mid-range control or long-range attacks?
- Will you enjoy practicing this character long enough to understand their assists and Link Attack routes?
- Does the character fit the other three heroes you want on the team?
The best first main is therefore the hero you can operate comfortably and are motivated to keep practicing. Ease of Use gives you a sensible starting filter; range, pace and enjoyment make the final decision.

Use Ease of Use as your first filter
On the character-select screen, look for the Ease of Use rating. More stars mean the character is easier to operate, according to Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine. The rating is about accessibility and input demand, not a statement that a character is stronger.
| Character | What the official guidance establishes | Good first test for |
|---|---|---|
| Captain America | Beginner-friendly; the hero used in Startup Battle | Players who want a balanced, systems-first introduction |
| Ms. Marvel | Beginner-friendly | New players who like an approachable Marvel hero |
| Wolverine | Beginner-friendly; aggressive close-range example | Rushdown players who want to stay close |
| Iron Man | Relatively easy to learn; ranged example paired with Wolverine | Players who prefer spacing and projectile-oriented control |
| Spider-Man | Relatively easy to learn | Players drawn to mobility and a familiar, agile hero |
| Storm | More advanced playstyle | Players who enjoy learning unusual tools and managing complexity |
| Danger | More advanced playstyle | Experienced fighting-game players seeking a demanding project |
Stars should narrow your shortlist, not make the decision for you. A beginner-friendly character you dislike can be a worse long-term choice than a slightly harder character you genuinely want to practice. Conversely, an advanced rating is a reason to schedule more training time, not evidence of superior competitive power.
Which character fits the way you want to play?
For a close-range rushdown style: Wolverine
Wolverine is the clearest official example of aggressive melee play. His natural test is whether you like advancing, staying within normal-attack range and turning successful hits into continued pressure. Because he is also listed as beginner-friendly, he is a practical first main for someone who wants to be in the opponent’s face without starting with a high-execution character.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn training, check whether his forward movement and attack reach feel reliable to you. Practice one short Light-attack chain, then confirm that you can recognize when to stop attacking and block. Rushdown is not simply pressing forward; you need a repeatable way to approach, a safe defensive choice when pressure ends and an assist that helps you continue offense or cover a retreat.
For ranged control: Iron Man
Iron Man is described in the official guide as relatively easy to learn and serves as its example of a powerful ranged partner to Wolverine. Choose him if you enjoy creating space, checking an approach and making the opponent cross a dangerous area before they can attack.
Test how comfortable you are with the timing of his long-range attacks and with defending after an opponent gets past them. A ranged character still needs close-range answers; practice a simple escape or block sequence rather than assuming projectiles will keep every opponent away.
For a balanced first main: Captain America
Captain America is the safest universal recommendation for a player who wants to learn the game’s systems before specializing. He is the character used in Startup Battle and is explicitly listed among the beginner-friendly choices. That makes him a strong starting point if you are new to fighting games, unsure whether you prefer offense or defense, or want a clear way to learn blocking, Link Attacks and assists.

Use Captain America to build habits that transfer to the rest of the roster: confirm a normal hit, choose a Link Attack route, call an assist at the right moment and return to defense when your turn ends.
For an agile, recognizable hero: Spider-Man
Spider-Man is identified as relatively easy to learn. If movement, fast repositioning and an iconic character motivate you more than a perfectly simple game plan, he is a sensible candidate. Treat “relatively easy” as an invitation to test him, not a promise that every advanced movement option will be effortless. Spend time checking whether you can control his spacing without losing track of your blocking and assist timing.
For a higher-execution challenge: Storm or Danger
Storm and Danger are identified as more advanced. They can be excellent long-term projects for players who enjoy unusual tools, more demanding inputs or a larger practice commitment. Start them in Training Mode and measure your own consistency: can you perform a basic approach, a defensive response and one Link Attack route several times in succession?
Do not describe either character as objectively stronger. The available official guidance establishes difficulty, not a tier ranking, matchup advantage or guaranteed result in ranked play.

Use the same short test for every candidate so your decision reflects how each character feels rather than the novelty of the first match.
- Read the Ease of Use stars. Note whether the character is beginner-friendly, relatively easy or advanced. This sets your expected learning curve.
- Complete Startup Battle. The opening lessons use Captain America to teach fundamentals. If you are new to the genre, learn the universal actions there before judging a specialist character.
- Enter Training Mode with Quick Skills. Quick Skills are one-button actions intended for beginners. Confirm that you can move, block, attack and call an assist without fighting the controls.
- Check ordinary attack range and movement. Walk, jump and perform normal attacks at close, medium and long distances. Ask whether the spacing feels intuitive rather than merely powerful.
- Practice one Link Attack route. Repeated Light attacks can chain into a Skill and trigger a Break. Medium chains lead to a Super Skill, while Heavy chains lead to an Ultimate Skill. Start with one reliable route for each situation instead of trying to memorize every option.
- Add one assist. Assists are called with the × button, and directional inputs select different teammates. The official guide recommends learning assists before direct switching, so begin by calling one assist during an approach, a blocked attack and a confirmed hit.
- Try a switch route. Once the assist timing feels natural, practice bringing in a teammate and returning to your main. This reveals whether your preferred team actually supports the rhythm you want.
- Play Episode Mode or local Versus. These modes let you test the character in real matches without immediately taking an unfinished game plan into ranked play.
- Re-test after changing controls. If you began with Quick Skills, try the same route with Command Inputs. Command Inputs provide slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge, making them a natural upgrade once the fundamentals are comfortable.
A candidate is ready for serious online testing when you can perform the basic route under pressure, recognize when to block, call an assist deliberately and explain what you want your character to do at close and long range.
Quick Skills or Command Inputs?
The game offers two input approaches rather than forcing a single control style. Quick Skills compress actions into one-button commands, reducing the mechanical barrier for beginners. Command Inputs ask for traditional directional-and-button motions and reward successful execution with slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge.

| Input style | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Skills | Learning movement, blocking, assists and your first combos | Lower execution demand; gives up the Command Input damage and Skill Gauge advantage |
| Command Inputs | Developing a practiced main and maximizing familiar routes | Requires more execution consistency |
There is no need to refuse a character because you cannot perform Command Inputs immediately. Learn the character with Quick Skills, then convert only the attacks you use often. This staged approach lets you evaluate the character’s decisions and spacing before mechanical difficulty becomes the deciding factor.

Do you need to learn all four characters?
No. PlayStation’s official explanation says the game is built so you can master one character while teammates appear through assists and team actions. It is still useful to understand the other three heroes’ roles, but you do not need four complete move lists before playing.
Think in layers:
- Your main: Learn movement, normals, Skills, Super Skills, Ultimate Skills, Link Attack routes, defensive options and assist interactions in depth.
- Your assists: Learn what each teammate contributes when called with × and which directional input selects them.
- Your switch options: Practice only the direct-switch routes that support your main’s approach, defense or combo plan.
- Your opponents’ characters: Learn enough to recognize their range, likely approach and punishable recovery; this comes from Battle Guides, Character Guides and matches.
This structure is intentional. A four-character team creates strategic variety without requiring four equal mastery projects.
How team access changes during a match
At the beginning of a match, only your first two characters are available. The third and fourth slots unlock after a successful stage transition or wall-bounce, or when you lose a round. This staged access affects how you build a team and how you practice it.
| Match point | What is available | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | First two characters | Make sure your main and first assist can function before later teammates appear |
| After a stage transition or wall-bounce | Third and fourth characters unlock | Practice the routes that bring your preferred support online |
| After losing a round | Third and fourth characters unlock | A setback expands your team options; do not treat the initial two-character phase as the whole match |
When testing a team, deliberately play through the opening with only the first two slots, then practice what changes when the later characters unlock. A team that looks strong only after all four heroes are available may feel awkward in the opening exchange.
Build a team around four practical axes
Range
Compare close-, mid- and long-range coverage. The official guide recommends combining close-range and long-range specialists, using Wolverine and Iron Man as its illustrative pairing. That is a useful starting point, not a mandatory formula. A team of characters you understand and enjoy can be better for you than a theoretically varied team you rarely practice.
Execution demand
Look at each character’s Ease of Use stars and input complexity. If your main is advanced, consider making the assists simpler to operate so your attention is not divided between several demanding move sets. If your main is beginner-friendly, a more technical support character can give you a later project without slowing your first lessons.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Assist utility
Test assists in three situations: covering your approach, extending a confirmed hit and helping you disengage. Directional selection means the same team can offer different support choices, so write down which input calls the assist you actually want. Do not judge an assist only by its animation; check whether its timing fits your main’s attacks.
Personal enjoyment
The official guidance ultimately favors a team made from your favorite heroes. Enjoyment matters because the game rewards repetition: you will need enough matches to learn spacing, defensive decisions, Link Attack timing and the staged arrival of teammates. A favorite character you practice consistently is a sounder choice than an unfamiliar recommendation.

Session 1: Learn the universal systems
Use Startup Battle with Captain America. Concentrate on movement, blocking, Link Attacks and assists. Finish by performing a simple Light-chain-to-Skill route several times without looking at the controls.
Session 2: Compare three candidates
Choose one beginner-friendly character, one relatively easy character and one character that matches your preferred range. Spend equal time in Training Mode checking movement, normal-attack reach and one Link Attack route. Equal practice prevents the first character from winning merely because you spent longer with it.
Session 3: Add team actions
Pick three teammates and test their assists with × plus the required directional input. Practice one approach assist, one combo-extension assist and one defensive call. Do not add direct switching until assist timing feels deliberate.
Session 4: Play offline matches
Use Episode Mode or local Versus to see whether your plan survives a moving opponent. Track concrete failures: missed anti-approach timing, unsafe pressure, dropped Link Attack or an assist called too late. Fix one failure in Training Mode before changing characters.
Session 5: Decide whether to commit
Keep the character if you can describe your basic game plan, execute one dependable route and still enjoy the neutral exchanges after several matches. If the character’s range or pace consistently feels wrong, return to your shortlist rather than forcing the choice.

Practice modes and offline options
Training Mode is the place to test inputs, spacing, assists and Link Attack routes without match pressure. Startup Battle teaches fundamentals with Captain America. Episode Mode and local Versus provide match-like practice, while All-Star Arena, Battle Guides and Character Guides add offline content. PlayStation says Character Guide trailers cover normals, Skills, supers, ultimates and assist types, making them the appropriate next reference when you need move-by-move information.
Use ranked play to validate a plan, not to discover the controls. Enter after you can block reliably, perform your chosen route, call at least one assist intentionally and understand how your team expands from two available characters to four.

Do you need an arcade stick?
No. A standard compatible controller is enough to learn every character. PlayStation confirms support for PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers, including customizable button mapping, so specialist hardware is an optional setup choice rather than a requirement for choosing a main.
If you already use an arcade stick or leverless controller, map assist, block and your most-used Skill so they are easy to reach, then retest the same candidate-main checklist. Do not purchase hardware to solve a character-choice problem; first determine whether the hero’s range and pace suit you on the controller you already own.
Common mistakes when choosing a main
- Picking only by perceived strength. No authoritative tier list or balance statistic establishes a strongest launch character in the available official information.
- Confusing difficulty with quality. More Ease of Use stars mean easier operation, not greater damage or a guaranteed ranked advantage.
- Learning four full characters at once. Master your main, then learn the assists and switch routes that support it.
- Ignoring the opening two-character phase. Your first two slots must function before stage transitions, wall-bounces or a lost round unlock the others.
- Practicing only combos. Movement, blocking, range checks and assist timing decide whether you can create the chance to use a combo.
- Going straight to ranked. Use Startup Battle, Training Mode, Episode Mode or local Versus to remove control uncertainty first.
- Changing characters after every loss. Identify the specific failure, practice it and change only if the character’s fundamental range or pace remains uncomfortable.
The short decision guide
| Your priority | First character to test | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Learn fighting-game fundamentals | Captain America | Beginner-friendly and used in Startup Battle |
| Stay close and apply pressure | Wolverine | Official aggressive close-range example and beginner-friendly |
| Control space from farther away | Iron Man | Relatively easy to learn and used as the ranged example |
| Try a familiar agile hero | Spider-Man | Officially described as relatively easy to learn |
| Use an approachable alternative | Ms. Marvel | Official beginner recommendation |
| Take on a demanding project | Storm or Danger | Officially identified as more advanced; plan extra Training Mode time |
If two candidates remain tied, choose the one whose visual design and play fantasy make you want to queue for another match. The game’s one-character mastery model means that sustained interest is a practical advantage: it is what gets you through the repetitions required to learn assists, Link Attacks, defense and team timing.
