Choose a MacBook Air for everyday work and many design tasks; choose a MacBook Pro if you need its listed XDR brightness for HDR review or want ProMotion up to 120Hz. Both compared families list P3 wide color, so the Pro’s display is not automatically more accurate for color-critical work.
What changes between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro displays?
In Apple’s current model comparison, the Air models use a Liquid Retina display and the Pro models use Liquid Retina XDR. Both compared families list P3 wide color. The main listed distinctions are brightness and refresh rate.

| Display feature | MacBook Air in Apple’s comparison | MacBook Pro in Apple’s comparison | What it means for choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display family | Liquid Retina | Liquid Retina XDR | XDR is the higher-spec option when HDR capability is important. |
| Brightness | 500 nits | 1,000 nits sustained full-screen; 1,600 nits peak for HDR content | Compare the Air’s listed brightness with the Pro’s qualified figures; the 1,600-nit figure is an HDR peak, not a sustained full-screen level. |
| Color | P3 wide color | P3 wide color | P3 support is useful, but does not by itself establish calibration accuracy. |
| Refresh rate | No ProMotion listed for the compared models | ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz | ProMotion may suit people who prefer smoother motion and scrolling. |
| Size and resolution | Varies by model | Varies by model | Check the exact model and screen size rather than relying on the family name. |
These are Apple-listed specifications, not independent measurements of real-world performance or color accuracy. See Apple’s Mac comparison page for the model-specific details.
Is the MacBook Air display good enough for design?
For many design tasks, the compared Air’s 500-nit display and P3 wide color may be sufficient. P3 is a useful color-space specification, but Apple’s comparison does not provide a measured calibration report or guarantee that a particular Air is calibrated to the accuracy your production workflow requires.

If your deliverables are color-critical, base the choice on the whole workflow rather than P3 alone. Check the color space required by your application and final output, how you calibrate and verify the display, and whether the work needs review on an external reference display. The cited specifications do not establish that either family is a professional reference monitor.
Which MacBook is best for video editing?
Choose based on whether you need HDR review
For ordinary editing where the built-in display’s listed P3 support and 500-nit brightness meet your needs, the compared Air may be adequate. If you need to review HDR content on the laptop display, the Pro’s Liquid Retina XDR specifications are the meaningful distinction: Apple lists 1,000 nits sustained full-screen and a peak of 1,600 nits for HDR content. The peak figure applies to HDR content; it should not be read as continuous full-screen brightness.

Consider motion and interface smoothness
Apple lists ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz on the compared Pro models. That can matter if smoother scrolling, motion, or timeline interaction is a priority. The comparison establishes the listed refresh-rate feature, not a measured improvement to editing speed or output quality.
Do I need the MacBook Pro XDR display?
Not necessarily. The Pro’s listed XDR brightness and ProMotion are reasons to choose it when HDR review, bright viewing conditions, or a preference for smoother motion matters to you. If those distinctions do not address a real need, the Air’s listed 500-nit Liquid Retina display and P3 support may be enough for everyday work and many design tasks. This is a specification-based decision, not a hands-on performance verdict.

Check the exact model before you decide
MacBook family names cover different screen sizes and configurations, and Apple lists size and resolution by model. Before buying, open Apple’s comparison page and check the exact generation and screen size you are considering. Confirm its pixel dimensions and display specifications; do not assume every Air or Pro has identical display characteristics.
