Anthropic’s Cyber Verification Program (CVP) is a gated access and verification framework for security professionals using Claude—not a standalone security scanner. It gives approved users tier-dependent access to advanced models and reduced blocking by cyber-safety classifiers. The most meaningful comparison with other AI cybersecurity offerings is therefore about eligibility, access rules, safeguards, deployment options, and evidence—not which model is supposedly “best.”
What Anthropic’s Cyber Verification Program does
Anthropic announced an expanded CVP on October 6, 2026. The program offers three tiers for security teams and, according to Anthropic, access to Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Mythos 5.1, and future models. Anthropic says its generally available models use conservative cyber safeguards, while CVP is intended to provide qualifying defenders with advanced capabilities and reduced blocking classifiers. Anthropic’s announcement describes the program’s scope and access model.

CVP changes access to Claude; it does not establish that Claude is an independent vulnerability scanner or replace an organization’s security program. Anthropic describes Claude workflows for threat modeling, vulnerability discovery and verification, alert triage, and patching, but that is vendor positioning rather than an independent assessment of the product. Anthropic’s cybersecurity overview describes those workflows.

Anthropic’s Help Center says ordinary Claude use remains suitable for secure code review, threat modeling, patching known issues, finding vulnerabilities in a user’s own source code, and triaging security alerts. Other work, including malware analysis or exploit validation, may be interrupted by safety classifiers. Cybersecurity professionals whose legitimate work is blocked can apply for CVP. See Anthropic’s CVP Help Center guidance for current application and product instructions.

Who can apply, and how access is granted
Applicants use Anthropic’s Verification Portal and provide organization and applicant details, describe their security work, and attest to the controls required for the tier they request. The application is made once per organization, after which organization administrators assign seats. Independent researchers, maintainers, and bug bounty hunters apply as individuals; Anthropic currently limits individuals to Tier C. Anthropic says it aims to notify applicants of a decision or request more information within seven business days, which is a target rather than a guaranteed processing time. The Help Center provides the current application details.
Anthropic lists the Claude Platform, Google Cloud Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry as CVP channels. Amazon Bedrock is limited to customers eligible for Enterprise Frontier Safeguards. The Help Center also describes access through Anthropic products, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry, and third-party apps that support enrollment; third-party platform access does not include Specialized Access. Because setup and availability vary by platform, consult the current instructions for the route you intend to use. The announcement and Help Center list program channels.

Security requirements depend on the tier
Anthropic’s security guidance lists phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA) methods including a FIDO2/WebAuthn security key, a passkey, or a smartcard/PIV. These are alternatives in the listed methods; the guidance does not mean every applicant must buy a physical security key. Tier and platform requirements differ.

For Defense Access, Anthropic’s page sets a December 15, 2026 cutoff for phishing-resistant MFA and disabling email magic-link sign-in. It also addresses credential handling and prohibits long-lived static credentials after that cutoff, subject to the platform conditions specified there. Red Team Access already has phishing-resistant MFA requirements, alongside additional user, credential, and workspace rules. Check Anthropic’s CVP security requirements for the rules that apply to your tier and platform before applying or configuring access.
How CVP differs from OpenAI’s cyber access program
The closest comparison in the available public information is OpenAI’s Trusted Access for Cyber, another verified-access program—not the entire universe of AI cybersecurity tools. Axios reported in April 2026 that OpenAI was adding tiers, with verification unlocking more permissive access to defensive cyber models, including GPT-5.4-Cyber for the highest tier at that time. Axios characterized rollout as gradual and said OpenAI intended to expand access as verification proceeded. This is secondary reporting, not a current official OpenAI specification; consult OpenAI’s own current documentation for operational details. Axios’s April 2026 report is the source for that description.

| Comparison point | Anthropic CVP | OpenAI Trusted Access for Cyber, as reported in April 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Verified access to Claude capabilities for qualifying defenders, with tier-dependent safeguards. | Verification unlocks more permissive access to defensive cyber models, according to Axios. |
| Structure | Anthropic describes three tiers. | Axios reported that OpenAI was adding tiers; a current official tier specification is not established by that report. |
| Specific model access | Anthropic lists Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Mythos 5.1, and future models. | Axios named GPT-5.4-Cyber for the highest tier at the time of its April 2026 report. |
| Application and controls | Anthropic publishes application, tier, platform, and security details in its announcement and Help Center. | Not established in the cited Axios report at the same level of detail. |
| Deployment channels | Anthropic lists its Claude Platform, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Microsoft Foundry, and limited Amazon Bedrock access, with third-party and tier exclusions. | Not established in the cited Axios report. |
These are program-design differences, not proof that one provider’s model performs better. For a useful evaluation, compare eligibility, how verification changes access, which defensive tasks ordinary access supports, security obligations, deployment routes, and the quality of public evidence. Anthropic also lists ecosystem partners such as CrowdStrike, Microsoft Security, Palo Alto Networks, and SentinelOne on its cybersecurity page; those listings show positioning and partnerships, not equivalent access controls or independently demonstrated performance.

- Anthropic says Project Glasswing partners uncovered at least 129,000 verified software vulnerabilities between April and July 2026. The company says this figure draws on partial data from 33 partner reports and open-source partnerships; more than 33,000 were rated critical or high severity. Anthropic warns the count may be an undercount. Anthropic’s Project Glasswing report gives the stated scope.
- Anthropic separately reports that its own open-source scanning found 5,500 additional verified software vulnerabilities between April and October 2026. This is a company-reported result, not an independent audit. The company’s report describes the figure.
- In Anthropic’s stated CyScenarioBench evaluation, 46 of 50 tasks were blocked in Defense Access, while 34 of 50 were completed in Red Team Access with no tasks blocked. Anthropic says the Red Team completion result matched its no-safeguards condition. This is a vendor evaluation of those conditions, not a general benchmark comparing commercial cybersecurity tools. Anthropic’s CVP announcement describes the evaluation.
Vulnerability discoveries are not the same as vulnerabilities fixed or risk eliminated. Anthropic says fewer than half of partners disclosed patch counts, often because fixes were still in progress, so its patch rate is undercounted. The figures do not support a conclusion about the proportion of findings remediated. Anthropic’s report explains this limitation.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether CVP fits your work
- Start with the task. If your work is secure code review, threat modeling, patching known issues, analysis of your own source code, or alert triage, Anthropic says ordinary Claude access may already fit. Consider applying if legitimate security work such as malware analysis or exploit validation is interrupted by classifiers.
- Check eligibility and tier. Organizations apply once and assign seats; individuals currently have Tier C access only. Read the rules for the tier you need before submitting an application.
- Confirm the platform route. Availability and exclusions vary, including the Amazon Bedrock eligibility condition and the lack of Specialized Access through third-party apps.
- Review security obligations first. Verify the current MFA, identity, credential, and workspace requirements for your tier and platform. A physical security key is one listed MFA option, not a universal purchase requirement.
- Judge results cautiously. Treat vendor-reported evaluations and vulnerability counts as evidence about the stated conditions, not as a like-for-like ranking against competing tools.
