Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore switching browsers, find out exactly what was discontinued: the browser itself, support for your Linux distribution, a release channel, or your CPU architecture. Then verify that your system is supported and compare update delivery, the sites and extensions you rely on, privacy controls, and the effort of moving your profile. Firefox, Brave, Chrome, and Vivaldi are candidates with Linux documentation, but none is a universal winner—and the available vendor information does not establish a comparative speed or privacy ranking.
First, identify what “discontinued” means
A notice about one Linux architecture or package is not necessarily an announcement that the browser has ended for every Linux user. Mozilla, for example, has a specific notice about Firefox support on 32-bit Linux, alongside separate Linux installation guidance. Check the wording of the notice and whether it names your architecture, distribution package, or release channel before deciding you must replace the browser.

Start with Mozilla’s 32-bit Linux support notice if Firefox is involved, and compare it with the general Firefox Linux installation guidance. The 32-bit notice is architecture-specific; it should not be read as a statement that Firefox has ended for all Linux systems.
Check support for your exact Linux system
“Linux support” alone is not enough to establish that a particular browser build will work on your machine. Check your distribution release and CPU architecture against the browser vendor’s current requirements, then check your distribution’s package documentation for the build it supplies. The official requirements and installation routes can change, and the sources here do not validate every distribution or package method.

- Firefox: Mozilla notes that distribution-packaged Firefox can have different requirements and may arrive later than upstream releases. See its Linux installation guidance and the 32-bit Linux support notice where relevant.
- Brave: Check the vendor’s system requirements and Linux installation instructions against your system.
- Chrome: Consult Google’s Chrome browser system requirements and Linux setup instructions.
- Vivaldi: Its product comparison page says Vivaldi is available for Linux. Confirm the current package and system fit for your particular distribution before installing.
Compare the options by what you need
Use the same practical checks for each candidate instead of relying on a broad ranking. Vendor documentation establishes some availability and extension details, but it does not provide independent, comparable tests of speed, resource use, privacy, or compatibility.
| Browser | What the cited documentation establishes | What to verify for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox | Mozilla documents Linux installation and distribution packaging caveats, as well as an architecture-specific 32-bit Linux support limitation. Mozilla installation guidance; 32-bit notice. | Whether your architecture and distribution package remain supported, and how that package receives updates. |
| Brave | Brave provides Linux installation instructions and system requirements. Installation; requirements. | Whether the current requirements and package route cover your distribution release and architecture. |
| Chrome | Google provides Linux setup instructions and browser system requirements. Setup; requirements. | Whether Google’s current requirements match your system and the installation route you intend to use. |
| Vivaldi | Vivaldi says it is available for Linux and supports Chrome Web Store extensions. Vivaldi product comparison. | Whether your distribution is supported and whether your specific extensions behave as needed; compatibility does not guarantee identical behavior. |
Update delivery
Find out who supplies your browser updates: the browser vendor or your distribution’s package channel. Mozilla specifically warns that distribution packages can have different requirements and may lag upstream releases. That makes update source and timing a meaningful part of the choice, not just an installation detail.

Sites and extensions
List the web apps, sites, and extensions you cannot do without. Check those in a candidate browser before removing your old profile. Vivaldi’s stated Chrome Web Store extension support may help if you want Chromium extension continuity, but it does not establish that every extension will work identically.

Inspect the browser’s actual settings and defaults against your own needs. The cited documentation does not establish a comparative privacy winner, so a product’s general positioning should not substitute for checking the controls you intend to use.

Plan the switch before removing the old profile
Migration effort depends on the data and browser pairing involved. The available documentation does not establish importer behavior for every source-and-destination combination, so do not assume bookmarks, passwords, or other profile data will transfer automatically.
- Record the browser, Linux distribution and release, and CPU architecture you currently use.
- Confirm what support ended and check the candidate’s current vendor requirements and your distribution’s package documentation.
- Install a candidate using a documented route, then test the sites, web apps, and extensions that matter to you.
- Check the candidate’s current migration instructions for the specific data you want to move, including bookmarks and passwords.
- Keep the old profile until the new browser works for your needs and you have confirmed the data you intended to move is available.
A useful decision rule
Choose a browser only after it passes your system-support check and your own compatibility test. If more than one candidate works, weigh update delivery, the privacy settings you want, and migration effort. A Linux community discussion captures the practical question—“Are there realistic browser alternatives to Chrome and Firefox?”—but it is an individual discussion, not evidence of how common the concern is: the discussion.
