Steam Cloud save files are game-specific: the files Steam syncs, and where the game keeps its local saves, depend on that title. Start with Steam’s local userdata folder, but check the game’s Steam store page and developer support information before changing files. If Steam shows a conflict, compare the listed timestamps with your play history; if progress is missing on a new PC, check the old computer for an unsynced copy.
Check whether the game uses Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud is not a universal backup of every game’s save data. Developers choose whether to use it and which files to synchronize, and some games do not use it for saves at all. Look for the Steam Cloud indicator on the game’s Steam store page, then check the developer’s support materials for the save location and the files included.

Even when a game supports Steam Cloud, its local save may live somewhere other than Steam’s userdata folder. The exact path and cross-platform behavior depend on the game.

Under userdata, Steam creates folders for accounts that have logged in on that computer. Inside an account folder, a game’s Steam appID identifies its folder. Steam’s example is Dota 2, appID 570, in Steamuserdata[steamID]570; Steam client settings use appID 7. The appID identifies a Steam product, not a universal save-folder layout, so confirm the relevant game’s files with its developer.
Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict
A conflict means the local and cloud copies differ, and Steam cannot infer which one contains the progress you want. Offline play can delay synchronization until the computer reconnects, which may leave two different versions.

- Read the dates and times Steam shows for the local and cloud copies.
- Match each timestamp to the computer where you played and the progress you remember making.
- Choose the copy that corresponds to the progress you want to keep; do not select one solely because its timestamp is later.
Before manually copying, replacing, or deleting any save folder, make a separate copy of the existing local files. If Steam reports a sync failure, do not launch the game until you address the problem: Steam warns that proceeding can produce a conflict and lost progress.

If the old computer is still available, check it before assuming the latest save is gone. Steam says a newer save may remain on that computer if it did not sync before shutdown. If the old machine still has the progress you need, reconnect it and let synchronization complete; Steam says a successful sync from the old machine may make the save available on the new one.

If the game does not use Steam Cloud, find its save location and transfer procedure in the developer’s support information. A local copy under userdata is useful to inspect, but it does not prove that every game’s local saves are stored there.
Use Steam’s Cloud log to investigate sync history
Steam’s cloud_log.txt records files written to or retrieved from Steam Cloud. The default log folders are:

Know what Steam Backup and installation moves preserve
Steam’s Backup feature copies compatible game files, but Valve-created game backups do not include saved games. For third-party games, save locations vary by developer, and save files may need to be copied back to their corresponding folders after restoring a game. Steam notes that many third-party Windows saves may be in C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games; that path is not universal.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
When moving a Steam installation, Steam recommends retaining the steamapps and userdata folders as applicable. Keeping userdata can preserve local Steam Cloud files, but it does not establish that every game’s local saves are covered. Follow the game developer’s location and transfer instructions for a specific title.
When Steam Support cannot restore a save
Steam Support can explain how Cloud works, but it says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts. If the desired copy is not on the old computer, in the local game save folder, or available through the game’s Cloud sync, Steam Support does not offer a recovery service for it.
