The right choice is less about a feature checklist than about who carries responsibility when a phone is lost, a service is unavailable, a payment needs inbound liquidity, or a channel must be closed on-chain.
Custodial and self-custodial Lightning wallets, in plain terms
A Lightning wallet is an interface for sending and receiving bitcoin over the Lightning Network. The decisive question is who controls the keys that authorize spending. In a custodial wallet, a provider holds the keys and operates much of the Lightning infrastructure for you. In a self-custodial wallet, your wallet controls the keys and you are responsible for the recovery material and the consequences of channel operation.

Lightning Labs describes non-custodial systems as giving users full control of their funds while requiring them to manage their own keys. That is the central trade: delegated convenience versus independent control. Neither model eliminates risk; each moves different risks to a different party.

What “custody” really changes
With custody, the app can feel like a conventional account: sign in, restore access through the provider’s process, and let the provider maintain channels. That convenience is useful for a first Lightning wallet or for small spending balances. It also means a provider can restrict withdrawals, suspend an account, suffer an outage, change fees, or be unable to meet a claim. Read the service’s custody terms rather than assuming that a familiar wallet interface means you own the keys.

What self-custody really changes
Self-custody gives you signing authority, but it does not mean the wallet is maintenance-free. You must protect a seed or equivalent recovery material, keep required channel information current, and understand how the wallet obtains inbound liquidity. A self-custodial wallet can still use an external Lightning Service Provider (LSP) for channels or swaps; using an LSP does not transfer ownership of your keys, but it does add a service relationship and fees.
How a Lightning wallet uses keys, channels and liquidity
Keys authorize payments
A Lightning payment is authorized by cryptographic keys. In a custodial arrangement, the provider signs on your behalf. In a self-custodial arrangement, the wallet or node under your control signs. If you cannot produce the required signing and recovery material, you cannot assume that an app installation alone proves ownership of the funds.
Channels are the payment paths
Lightning uses payment channels rather than recording every transaction directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. Channel balances change as payments move. The wallet must therefore maintain current channel state as well as the keys that control the funds. A provider can hide this machinery; a self-custodial wallet may expose channel status, peer relationships, routing decisions or liquidity warnings.

Having a balance to spend does not automatically give a wallet enough inbound liquidity to receive payments. Lightning Labs explains that an LSP can open channels or perform swaps for users of non-custodial wallets. The LSP’s fee may be charged upfront or deducted from an incoming payment. Before choosing a wallet, find out whether it includes an LSP, whether you can select one, how much inbound capacity is provided, and what happens when that capacity is exhausted.

Channels can fall back to the blockchain
Lightning contracts can be enforced on the Bitcoin blockchain if a participant is uncooperative. That fallback protects the contract but does not make the event free or automatic. Closing a channel can create an on-chain transaction fee, require software to process recovery, and leave you waiting for the appropriate confirmation or timeout. Ask how the wallet handles cooperative close, force-close, delayed funds and migration to another wallet.
Recovery: what happens when something goes wrong
If a custodial phone is lost
Recovery is governed by the provider’s account and identity process. You may be able to sign in on another device, but that is a policy outcome, not proof that you control the underlying keys. Before depositing meaningful funds, confirm the exact recovery path, whether two-factor authentication is required, how long a lockout lasts, and whether withdrawals are available immediately after recovery.
If a self-custodial phone is lost
The phone is replaceable only if the required recovery information is available and the wallet supports restoration from it. A seed phrase may restore key control, while channel state may be needed to recover the latest Lightning balances safely. Restoring an old state can create a loss or dispute if the wallet cannot reconcile later channel updates. Do not treat a screenshot, an exported app file or a cloud backup as equivalent to the wallet’s documented recovery method.

Backups for a Lightning node
Core Lightning’s documentation warns that, because you are the only party storing your financial information, you cannot recover it from somewhere else. Its backup guidance identifies the HSM secret, static channel recovery data and the database as backup components. The precise files and procedure vary by implementation, so follow the wallet’s current documentation and test that a backup can actually be restored before relying on it.

Seeds and passphrases
LND guidance says to store the seed and any passphrase safely and warns that the seed cannot be exported from an LND wallet. Record the recovery material exactly as instructed, keep it offline and protected from unauthorized access, and make sure trusted heirs or a documented recovery plan can locate it if that is part of your threat model. Never enter a seed or passphrase into a website, support chat or unverified app.
Recovery questions to ask before funding
- What exact items must be backed up: seed, passphrase, channel state, database, HSM secret or another file?
- Can the wallet recover after a complete device failure, not just an app reinstall?
- What happens to in-flight or force-closed channels?
- Is there a documented migration path to another wallet implementation?
- Which recovery steps require an on-chain transaction and therefore a miner fee?
Liquidity and LSP choices in a self-custodial wallet
When you need inbound liquidity
If incoming payments fail or are limited, the issue may be inbound capacity rather than a missing balance. An LSP can open a channel toward your wallet or execute a swap that changes where liquidity sits. This can make a self-custodial wallet practical without requiring you to run every piece of infrastructure yourself.
How LSP fees are collected
Ask whether the LSP charges a fixed or variable amount, whether the fee is paid before the channel or swap, and whether it is deducted from the incoming payment. Compare the fee with the amount and frequency of payments you expect; a service that is economical for occasional receipts may be expensive for many small transfers.
What you still manage
An LSP supplies liquidity services, not complete responsibility. You still control the keys, protect backups, update the wallet, monitor channel state and decide whether the provider’s terms are acceptable. Verify what happens if the LSP is offline, changes policy or stops supporting your wallet, and whether you can close or migrate channels without its cooperation.

KYC, privacy, fees and operational risk
Custody is only one axis. Compare the full operating model before choosing.

Custodial counterparty risk
A provider-managed wallet reduces technical work but adds dependence on the provider’s solvency, security, policies and availability. Read the withdrawal policy and outage procedure before treating the wallet as a place to hold funds for a long period. A low-fee service is not low-risk if you cannot verify how access and withdrawals work.
Self-custodial operational risk
Self-custody removes the provider as the holder of your keys, not the possibility of mistakes. A lost seed, incomplete channel backup, misconfigured node, expired software or inadequate inbound liquidity can prevent a payment or complicate recovery. The cost is measured in attention as well as money.

A practical decision framework
Choose custodial when these statements describe you
- You want to start quickly without learning channel concepts or operating a node.
- You prefer provider-managed liquidity and a provider-defined recovery process.
- Your balance is limited enough that provider and access risk is acceptable.
- You have checked KYC, privacy, withdrawal, outage and fee terms and can accept them.
Use a small test amount first. Make a payment, receive one, review the fee and verify that withdrawal or transfer works under the provider’s rules before increasing your balance.
Choose self-custodial when these statements describe you
- Controlling the signing keys is more important to you than a turnkey setup.
- You can secure a seed or equivalent recovery material and any required passphrase.
- You will maintain the documented channel and database backups.
- You are willing to evaluate inbound liquidity, LSP terms, software updates and possible on-chain fees.
Start with an amount you can afford to manage while you learn the wallet’s backup and channel procedures. Confirm that a test restore works before relying on the wallet for larger payments.
When neither model is automatically right
If you cannot protect recovery material, self-custody is unsafe. If you cannot accept a provider controlling access or applying KYC and withdrawal rules, custody is unsuitable. In that case, postpone funding until you can meet the responsibilities of one model, rather than choosing based solely on an attractive interface or advertised fee.
Setup checklist before sending funds
- Identify the custody model. Read the wallet’s terms and confirm whether you or the provider controls the keys.
- Document recovery. Write down the provider recovery path or the self-custodial seed, passphrase and channel-backup requirements. Keep them offline and protected.
- Check device and software requirements. Confirm the supported operating system, wallet version, node connectivity and update process.
- Understand receiving. Determine whether the wallet has inbound liquidity, uses an LSP, opens channels automatically or requires you to pay for a swap.
- Price every fee. Include payment routing, LSP services, swaps, withdrawals, channel opens and on-chain closes.
- Run small tests. Send and receive a small payment, then verify the balance, invoice status and any fee shown by the wallet.
- Test recovery before scaling. Use the documented restore or migration procedure in a safe environment; do not wait for a lost phone or failed disk.
- Plan failure handling. Save the instructions for force-close, channel recovery, provider outage and moving funds to another wallet.
Common failure scenarios and the right response

What to ask a wallet provider or LSP
- Do you control the keys, or does the service?
- What exactly is backed up, and can I restore it on another device or implementation?
- How are channels opened, rebalanced, force-closed and migrated?
- How much inbound liquidity is available, and can it be increased through an LSP or swap?
- Are LSP, routing, withdrawal, conversion or on-chain fees deducted automatically?
- Which countries can use the service, and where is KYC required?
- What information is logged, and how long is it retained?
- What happens during an outage, account lock, provider shutdown or LSP discontinuation?
Bottom line for choosing your first Lightning wallet
A custodial wallet is the simpler operational choice when you accept provider control and have verified its recovery, withdrawals, privacy, KYC and fee policies. A self-custodial wallet is the control-oriented choice when you can protect keys and channel backups and are willing to manage liquidity, LSP relationships and possible on-chain recovery costs. Make the decision by assigning each responsibility to the party you trust to perform it: the provider in custody, or you in self-custody.
