Choose a judo gi—also called a judogi—by matching its fit to the maker’s current size chart, its fabric and construction to your training needs, and its approval and specifications to the rules of the event you plan to enter. An IJF-approved label is not a universal tournament requirement: confirm the applicable rules with the event organizer or governing body before buying.
Start with how and where you will use it
A judogi consists of a jacket (uwagi), trousers (zubon), and belt (obi). Unlike ordinary workout clothing, it is designed to be gripped during throwing techniques, so a suitable choice needs to balance fit, durability, and comfort. The International Judo Federation (IJF) explains the uniform’s role in “Judogi: Much More Than Armour.”

- Regular practice: Compare the model’s fit, fabric, reinforcement, and care instructions with your training needs.
- A specific tournament: Check that event’s rules, required colour, and equipment-control guidance before choosing a model.
- Both: Use the event requirements as a minimum, then choose a model whose sizing and care instructions also work for regular training.
Choose a size using the maker’s chart
Start with the current size chart for the exact model. Height can be a useful starting point, but do not rely on it alone when the maker also provides body or garment measurements. Compare the jacket’s sleeve and body dimensions and the trousers’ measurements with the chart, and check the model’s stated fit category if one is provided.
- Take the measurements requested by the maker and find the corresponding chart entry.
- Compare the chart’s jacket and trouser measurements separately; do not assume one size label guarantees the same fit across brands or models.
- Read the model’s care instructions and any manufacturer guidance about shrinkage before settling on a size.
- If your measurements fall between sizes or the chart does not explain a key measurement, ask the seller or manufacturer how that model fits rather than guessing from height alone.
The reviewed official sources do not establish one shrinkage rate for all judogi, so there is no reliable universal percentage to add to a size calculation. Follow the care guidance for the specific model.

Compare fabric, weight, and construction
The IJF’s March 2026 manufacturing regulation provides a useful reference for how regulated judogi are made. It says the fabric should not be so thick, stiff, or slippery that an opponent cannot grip it.

These specifications help explain why judogi differ in fabric and weave. They do not replace checking the model’s fit, care instructions, and suitability for the intended event.

Verify tournament rules before buying for competition
Competition requirements depend on the governing body and event. The IJF says equipment control is intended to keep uniform requirements—including sleeve length and fabric thickness—from affecting fair results. Its explanation appears in “Judogi Control Guarantees Fair Play.”

- Ask the tournament organizer or governing body which rules apply to your event and whether an IJF label or another approval is required.
- Check the required colour and any current equipment-control instructions.
- Verify the exact model and its current label or approval status; do not assume approval for one model or an older label covers another.
- Use the rules applicable to that event rather than treating older measurements or informal advice as universal requirements.
The IJF documents index lists Sport and Organisation Rules dated 14 August 2026. Exact fit measurements are not stated here, so confirm the current requirements directly with the event or its governing body instead of relying on an assumed sleeve, jacket, or trouser measurement.

Check care and practical details
The IJF says a judogi should be washed after each training session. Follow the care instructions for the exact model, since a single wash temperature or shrinkage allowance is not established for all judogi. The IJF’s care guidance is included in “Judogi: Much More Than Armour.”
Before ordering, confirm the model’s composition, stated weight and construction, care guidance, available size, and required colour. If it is for competition, check approval and event rules as well. A brand name alone does not establish that a particular model fits you or meets a tournament’s requirements.
