Use the lubricant and amount specified in the owner’s manual for your exact firearm and lubrication point. Some manuals call for oil at particular moving parts; others specify grease on selected contact surfaces and oil elsewhere. There is no universal rule that grease or oil is always preferable. Before maintenance, verify the firearm is unloaded and follow its manual’s handling and disassembly instructions.
How to choose between gun grease and gun oil
Start with the firearm’s current owner’s manual—not a general rule about lubricant types. Check both the named lubrication points and the amount to apply. GLOCK likewise directs owners to the model’s manual for lubrication locations and quantity, and warns: “Too much lubrication can affect the pistol’s performance.” GLOCK care guidance

- Exact firearm and contact point: Follow the instructions for that model and location. Do not transfer a lubricant choice from another firearm.
- Part and movement: A manual may specify oil for one moving part and grease for a distinct contact surface. The manufacturer’s directions determine the choice.
- Amount and conditions: Apply only the specified quantity. More lubricant is not automatically better; excess can collect debris or interfere with function, and may congeal in cold conditions.
- Storage or exposure: Consult the manual for care after exposure and before storage. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish one universal oil-versus-grease storage rule.
Why the lubrication points vary
Different firearm designs have different contact surfaces and maintenance instructions. These manufacturer examples illustrate the variation; they are not interchangeable directions.

After field stripping as its manual describes, Springfield specifies one drop on each side of the rear slide rails and drops at two named barrel locations. It also says not to apply oil or grease to the striker. Its manual states: “Only a very small amount of oil is needed to adequately lubricate moving parts and prevent rust.” Springfield Armory XD-S manual

Browning Citori shotgun
The Citori manual specifies grease on named hinge-pin, locking, and forearm-bracket surfaces, and a drop of oil at another specified point. That different pattern is a reason to consult the Citori manual rather than copy another model’s instructions. Browning Citori manual
Browning Buck Mark pistol
The Buck Mark manual recommends lightweight gun oil for listed moving parts, the frame-and-slide contact area, and the spring guide. It also cautions against excessive lubricant. Browning Buck Mark manual

GLOCK pistols and POF-USA firearms
GLOCK’s care guidance recommends regular cleaning and lubrication after firing and after specified environmental exposure, while directing owners to the model manual for exact locations and amounts. POF-USA’s basic procedure calls for a light application on bolt-carrier riding surfaces; it also warns that “Excessive lubricant will attract dust and debris.” Its guidance notes that excess lubricant may congeal in cold weather and affect safe operation and reliability. Use small amounts and firearm-specific products
Excess oil or grease can attract dirt and debris or interfere with safe, reliable function. In cold weather, excess lubricant may congeal. These cautions do not mean every firearm needs the same product or quantity: follow its manual, especially for parts where lubricant is prohibited.
