Check your operating system, processor, graphics hardware, RAM, and free storage, then treat the listed minimums as a first-pass filter, not a guarantee of smooth performance.
Check your PC before choosing a game
Write down your computer’s exact model or its components. On Windows, you can find basic system details in Settings under System > About; for graphics information, check Settings > System > Display > Advanced display or the computer maker’s specifications. Menu labels can vary by Windows version. If you are unsure which graphics adapter or processor you have, use the exact PC model to find its manufacturer specifications.

For each candidate, open its current store listing and compare these details with your PC:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Operating system: Confirm the game supports your Windows version. If you use macOS or Linux, read the requirements for that operating system rather than the Windows section.
- Processor (CPU): Compare the named model or equivalent. A processor’s name alone does not establish that it performs the same as a listed model.
- Graphics (GPU): Check the listed graphics model and any stated video memory (VRAM). Integrated graphics may not match a named dedicated graphics card.
- Memory (RAM): Check the required system memory, not just storage space.
- Other requirements: Note DirectX or other platform requirements.
- Storage: Make sure you have at least the listed free space available.
If the listing gives a resolution or frame-rate target for minimum hardware, compare that too. The examples below show why requirements must be checked title by title.

Compare the actual requirements, not just the genre
| Game | Published minimum requirements | What the listing tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Darkwood (Steam, 2017) | Windows 10 64-bit; Intel Core i3-2100 or AMD Phenom II X2 565; 4 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (1 GB) or AMD Radeon HD 5770 (1 GB); 10 GB storage. Separate macOS 12+ and SteamOS/Linux requirements are listed. | Its Windows minimum gives specific older CPU and graphics-card examples. Use the requirements for your own operating system. |
| Eyes: The Horror Game (Steam, 2024) | Windows 10 or later; Intel Core i3 or AMD equivalent; 4 GB RAM; GeForce GTX 660; DirectX 11; 900 MB available storage. | The page names a different graphics minimum from Darkwood’s. Do not assume one game’s requirements represent all horror games. |
| Outer Terror (Steam, 2023) | Minimum: Windows 10/11; Intel Core i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 6-Core or above; 4 GB RAM; GTX 1050 or RX 560; DirectX 11; 1 GB storage. Recommended: Windows 11 64-bit; Ryzen 7 series or above; 16 GB RAM; RTX 2070, RX 6600, or Arc A750; DirectX 12; 1 GB storage. | The listed minimum CPU and GPU are substantially different from those on the other two pages, and its recommended memory and graphics requirements are higher than its minimums. |
These are publisher-listed product specifications, not independent performance tests. None of these figures by itself tells you what frame rate your particular computer will achieve.
Use minimum requirements as a screen, not a promise
A PC that meets a game’s published minimum has passed an initial compatibility check; that does not establish that it will run smoothly at your preferred resolution or frame rate. The listings above do not provide a comparable performance target that would let you predict those results across the three games.

If a component falls below a listed minimum, or the store page describes it too vaguely to compare confidently, mark the game as uncertain rather than assuming it will work. Look for current reports from players with the same or closely matching PC configuration. Reports about a different processor, graphics adapter, or operating system may not settle the question for your machine.

- List a few candidate games. Use each title’s current official store page as the source for its requirements.
- Compare every requirement. Record whether your PC meets the OS, CPU, GPU, RAM, platform, and storage entries for each game.
- Separate confirmed matches from uncertainties. Flag unclear hardware comparisons or any component below the published minimum.
- Check for a stated performance target and adjustable graphics options. Do not assume a game offers useful reductions or a particular target if its listing does not establish that.
- Decide what you will accept. If you are willing to use a lower resolution or frame rate, that may affect your choice, but the requirements alone cannot promise the result.
- Recheck the listing before buying or installing. Requirements can change, and use the section for your operating system.
Do not use a Steam Deck compatibility label as proof that a game will perform well on a low-end Windows PC. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility material describes testing for that portable device, not a general performance guarantee for other computers.
