To keep smart-home devices apart from your computers, choose a router with a clearly documented way to create separate network groups—and verify what traffic it blocks between them. A guest Wi-Fi network can be the simplest option, but its isolation behavior varies by router. Households that need several groups or precise traffic rules should look for VLANs and firewall or access-control rules that apply between those groups.
What network segmentation does—and what it does not do
Segmentation puts devices into separate network groups so they do not all share the same communication paths. For example, a household might separate IoT devices, personal computers, work computers, and guests. CISA describes these as possible groups for a home wireless network. (CISA home wireless guidance)

Separating less-trusted IoT devices from everyday computers can limit some opportunities for devices to communicate across the home network. It is one layer of security, not a guarantee against malware or a substitute for device updates and other protections. NIST recommends segmentation where possible and keeping IoT devices with known security risks separate from everyday computing devices. (NIST SP 1800-15)
Choose the level of separation your household can maintain
Guest Wi-Fi for a straightforward setup
A router’s guest Wi-Fi feature may be an accessible way to put smart-home devices on a separate network. CISA says, “Setting up the segments can be as simple as using the guest WiFi network option available in most routers.” (CISA Federal Mobile Workplace Security, Appendix B.3) That does not mean all guest networks behave alike. Before buying or configuring a router, check whether its guest network can reach the main local network (LAN), whether guest devices can reach one another, and whether the IoT devices can still access services they need.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
VLANs and traffic rules for more control
If you need multiple device groups or want to decide which kinds of traffic can pass between them, look for VLAN support alongside firewall or access-control rules that apply between segments. A VLAN label by itself does not prove that traffic is blocked: the router’s documentation should explain how devices are assigned and how communication between groups is handled. CISA describes VLANs, access-control lists, stateful inspection, and firewalls as segmentation mechanisms in broader infrastructure guidance; that is useful for understanding the tools, not a requirement that every home router offer enterprise features. (CISA network infrastructure guidance)
What to compare when choosing a router
| Decision point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Isolation method | Does the router document guest Wi-Fi, multiple SSIDs, VLANs, or another way to assign devices to separate groups? |
| Traffic between groups | Can you block or allow traffic between the IoT group and trusted devices? What happens by default, and can devices on the same guest network communicate with one another? |
| Administration access | Can you manage the router locally and leave remote administration through the WAN disabled unless you truly need it? NIST’s September 2024 consumer-router profile says to limit access to necessary interfaces and gives disabling remote access by default, especially via the WAN interface, as an example. (NIST IR 8425A) |
| Security maintenance | Does the manufacturer provide security updates and clear support information for the model? Confirm the current support status; no model-specific end-of-support dates are established here. |
| Household fit | Check current product documentation for supported Wi-Fi bands, capacity, and coverage appropriate to your home; those specifications vary by model. |
| Manageability | Can the people responsible for the network understand the rules, add devices to the right group, and keep the setup working over time? |
Configure and check the separation
- Find the router’s network or Wi-Fi settings. Create the guest network or other separate group using the manufacturer’s current setup instructions; menu names and paths differ by model.
- Review isolation controls. Look for settings that prevent the separate group from accessing the main LAN and, where desired, prevent devices in the group from reaching one another. Do not assume either behavior from the word “guest.”
- Check required device services. Confirm that each IoT device can still reach the internet or household services it needs after separation. If a feature stops working, consult the router and device documentation before weakening isolation broadly.
- Keep the router and devices maintained. Install available security updates and review the router’s support information. NIST’s home IoT guidance recommends ongoing device updates; a router cannot compensate for device software that no longer receives security fixes. (NIST SP 1800-15)
Advanced option: device-specific MUD policies
Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) is a standard that lets a manufacturer identify the network communications an IoT device needs for its intended function. In NIST’s demonstration, a MUD-capable network can permit those required communications and prohibit other traffic, offering more device-specific control than placing a whole group on guest Wi-Fi. The cited NIST work does not establish how widely MUD is available or how easy it is to configure in consumer routers currently sold, so treat it as an advanced capability to investigate rather than a baseline buying requirement. - Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
For readers evaluating more advanced IoT network setup, NIST SP 1800-36, published in November 2025, covers trusted network-layer onboarding and lifecycle management. Its approach establishes trust before a device receives network credentials; it is additional context, not a minimum requirement for choosing a home router. (NIST SP 1800-36)
