Then assess grid-service participation on its actual local terms—especially who controls dispatch, what reserve remains for outages, and how any payment is calculated.
What should a home battery keep running?
Start with a critical-load list
Decide which circuits matter during an outage before comparing battery capacity. Possible categories to consider include refrigeration, lighting, communications, selected outlets, heating or cooling controls, pumps, and medical equipment. These are prompts for your household, not a guarantee that a particular battery can operate them together.

For each appliance or circuit, note its running demand, how many hours you expect to use it, and whether it has a motor or compressor with a high startup draw. Also consider which loads may run at the same time. A pump starting while a refrigerator and other appliances are running can create a different power requirement from those devices operating separately.
Estimate the energy for your outage scenario
Estimate energy use over your intended backup period, rather than relying on a generic “days of backup” claim. For an appliance with a known wattage and expected operating time, a rough estimate is: watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours. For equipment that cycles on and off, estimate its actual operating time where possible; its full rated wattage multiplied by every outage hour may overstate use. Treat the result as a planning estimate and have the installer check it against the selected circuits and equipment.

How do power and energy determine battery size?
The California Air Resources Board’s residential backup sizing tool states that a backup battery must be sized for both demand power and total stored energy. The distinction is essential: kilowatts describe how much power a system can supply at a moment; kilowatt-hours describe how much energy it can deliver over time.
- Continuous output: Compare the inverter’s continuous power rating with the loads that may operate simultaneously.
- Surge output: Compare the short-duration surge rating and its stated duration with the startup demand of motors, pumps, compressors, or other equipment.
- Usable energy: Compare usable kilowatt-hours—not just a headline or nominal capacity—with the energy estimate for your outage scenario.
A battery can have substantial stored energy but insufficient output for a large motor or several simultaneous loads. Conversely, it can supply the required power but run out of usable energy before a long outage ends. Ask the seller or installer to show how both ratings match your specific load list; one capacity number cannot answer both questions.
What should you verify about backup installation?
A battery’s advertised capacity does not establish which parts of your home will receive power. Before comparing installed offers, confirm the backup configuration and what is included in the work.

- Backed-up circuits: Identify whether the design serves selected loads or the whole panel, and list the circuits actually included.
- Transfer and control equipment: Ask what equipment switches the home to backup power and how the system behaves when grid power fails.
- Solar during an outage: Confirm whether the proposed battery and solar equipment can recharge while the grid is down, and under what operating conditions.
- Compatibility: Check the proposed system against your existing solar, inverter, electrical service, and any export or interconnection constraints.
- Installation scope: Get clarity on equipment, electrical work, permits, interconnection steps, and other items included in the quote. Requirements depend on the property and local rules, so confirm them with the installer, utility, equipment documentation, and relevant local authority.
How should you compare battery offers?
Have each installer price the same outage scenario and critical-load list. Compare the complete installed configuration, not a battery unit in isolation. Use this checklist to identify differences that a headline capacity or price can hide.

| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Energy capacity | Usable stored energy and estimated runtime for your chosen loads. |
| Power output | Continuous and surge output against simultaneous and startup loads. |
| Backup scope | Selected circuits or whole-home configuration, plus equipment included. |
| Recharge and resilience | Whether compatible solar can recharge the system during an outage and how any reserve is configured. |
| Compatibility | Fit with existing solar, inverter, electrical service, and export or interconnection constraints. |
| Economics | Installed price, tariff assumptions, warranty and degradation terms, and incentives verified for your location. |
| Grid-service control | Who controls dispatch, event schedule, minimum reserve, opt-out or exit terms, and payment formula. |
| Reliability evidence | How availability claims are measured and whether the battery is committed to another use or program. |
Ask for warranty terms and degradation assumptions in writing, along with the installed price and payment schedule. A product-only price is not equivalent to a turnkey installation quote. If a quote includes grid-service income or an incentive, ask what conditions must be met and request a version of the economics that excludes that uncertain value.
When might grid services make sense?
Some batteries can shift energy between times of day; programs may also use participating batteries to support grid reliability. The California Public Utilities Commission describes large systems charging during lower-cost daytime hours and discharging during higher-demand evenings. It also identifies reliability, renewable integration, infrastructure relief, and backup in at-risk locations among storage’s broader benefits. Those system-level benefits do not establish a particular household’s bill savings or program compensation.

- Who can dispatch the battery, and how frequently and at what times can events be called?
- What minimum reserve, if any, is protected for your outage needs?
- Can the system export energy, and are export limits or other interconnection conditions relevant?
- How does dispatch interact with your time-of-use settings if the battery is already discharging to reduce your bill?
- How is payment calculated, when is it paid, and what conditions can reduce or eliminate it?
- Can the battery also be committed to another program or incentive, and would that affect eligibility or availability?
- How can you opt out or leave, and what happens to equipment settings or payments if you do?
California Public Advocates Office commentary cautions that a battery already being used for time-of-use savings or SGIP cycling may have less energy available for a virtual power plant (VPP) event. The practical value depends on dispatch timing, availability, export capability, backup reserves, and overlapping commitments—not simply the battery’s total capacity.

Interpret program performance figures in context
In March 2026 commentary, the California Public Advocates Office reported performance figures of 41% and 25% for third-party demand response, and 81% and 85% for BIP plus other reliability demand-response resources, on August 14 and 15, 2020, respectively. These figures compare those California resource categories on those two dates; they are not a forecast of how a residential VPP will perform or what an individual participant will earn.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you evaluate incentives and overall economics?
Use your actual utility tariff and a written installed quote. Keep three kinds of value distinct: backup resilience for your household, potential bill savings from energy management, and conditional compensation or incentives from a grid program. Resilience can matter greatly, but its value depends on the outage scenario and your household; it should not be disguised as a guaranteed financial return.
Model a conservative case in which a grid program is unavailable, dispatch does not occur, or a payment is lower than expected. Do not treat a projected event payment as certain income, and do not assume an incentive is open to your address until its current status, eligibility, administrator, and funding are confirmed. No universal payback period follows from battery capacity alone: the result depends on the household’s load profile, installed quote, tariff, outage priorities, and local program terms.
California examples are not nationwide offers
California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is one possible incentive path, but availability and qualification depend on the live program rules and funding. A CPUC program result reported residential solar-and-storage equity reservations available beginning June 2, 2025; verify current status and eligibility with the program administrator before including any incentive in a purchase decision.

The California Energy Commission’s Distributed Electricity Backup Assets (DEBA) program concerns distributed reliability assets, including non-residential or aggregated residential projects; it should not be read as a direct individual-home rebate promise. The CEC page reported that the 2025–26 budget appropriated $46.1 million for new clean microgrids and such projects, and that a draft solicitation was released for comment in June 2026, with a final solicitation then anticipated later in 2026. Check the CEC’s current program materials for any subsequent status.
What do California’s grid-scale figures tell a homeowner?
A July 9, 2026 CPUC overview said more than 16,000 MW of energy-storage capacity had come online in California since 2020 and described planning for more than 14,000 MW of additional battery storage by 2032. The same overview said earlier storage projects were on track to deliver about $22 million per year in net benefits by the end of 2021, with annual benefits potentially reaching $835 million to $1.34 billion by 2032. These are California system-level figures, not estimates of a home battery’s savings, payment, or backup runtime.
What is the practical decision rule?
First, select a specific outage scenario and the circuits you want to protect. Require the proposed system to meet both the loads’ continuous and startup power needs and the usable-energy requirement for your target runtime. Next, compare backup architecture, compatibility, installation scope, and warranty across quotes based on that same scenario. Consider grid services only after reviewing who can dispatch the battery, what reserve remains, and whether the actual local payment and exit terms suit you. If a proposal cannot show those details, its headline capacity or projected earnings are not enough to make a sound comparison.
