There is no universal espresso grind setting. Start with the guidance for your grinder, keep your dose and target yield steady, then adjust in small steps: grind finer to slow a shot that runs too quickly, or coarser to speed one that runs too slowly. Taste the result as well as watching the timer; a target time is a starting point, not a guarantee of good espresso.
What grind size should you use for espresso?
Use a fine grind that lets your machine produce the flow and taste you want. The exact setting depends on the grinder: its numbered scale and calibration do not transfer to another model. For example, Breville recommends starting at setting 15 on the Barista Pro’s 30-setting scale, but at 30 on the Oracle Jet’s 45-setting scale, where 1 is finest and 45 coarsest. These are model-specific starting points, not general espresso settings. See Breville’s Barista Pro guidance and the Oracle Jet manual.

For a new coffee, consult the grinder or machine manual first. If it gives a starting range, use that rather than copying a setting from a video or another machine.
How to dial in espresso grind size
- Choose a consistent dose and target yield. A common starting recipe is a 1:2 ratio in about 25–30 seconds—for example, 18 g of ground coffee yielding 36 g of espresso. La Marzocco Home presents this as a starting point for a new coffee, not a rule for every bean, basket, machine, or taste. See its espresso workflow and Lavazza’s espresso guide.
- Prepare the puck consistently and pull a shot. Note the grinder setting, dose, yield, time, and taste. A digital scale can help you repeat dose and yield; it does not identify the correct grind on its own.
- Adjust grind in a small step. If the shot runs too fast, go finer. If it runs too slowly or nearly chokes, go coarser. Hold dose and preparation steady while evaluating the change.
- Taste and repeat. Make another small adjustment if the result needs it, recording each change so you can tell what affected the shot.
Grinder steps vary in size, and even a small change can have a noticeable effect. If the next click swings too far, Fellow suggests considering a small dose adjustment rather than making several uncontrolled changes at once. Its grind-size guide also discusses troubleshooting and equipment limits.

How to read shot time and taste
Flow and time are useful clues, not a complete diagnosis. A coarse grind can make a shot run quickly, but under-dosing or channeling can also contribute. A shot that runs slowly may be ground too fine or may contain too much coffee. Keep the dose appropriate to the basket and use consistent puck preparation before concluding that grind alone is responsible.
Taste matters alongside the timer. Fellow describes sour, thin espresso as a possible sign of under-extraction and suggests trying a slightly finer grind. Bitter or dry espresso paired with a slow shot may improve with a slightly coarser grind. These are troubleshooting clues, not definitive tests: dose, channeling, roast profile, coffee age, and shot profile can also affect taste. La Marzocco cautions that visual cues alone do not tell you whether espresso will taste good or bad.

- Precision grind control: The visual timing knob is marked in seconds so you can set a consistent grind for espresso, drip, or French press. Stop the cycle when the texture looks right; no more mixed boulders and dust from random pulsing.
- 70g / 2.5 oz bowl for coffee, spices, herbs, grains, and nuts: One fill handles beans plus dry ingredients such as pepper, cumin, and flaxseed. Capacity is 70 grams per batch, enough for about 3 coffee servings depending on brew strength. Do not grind wet or oily foods.
- Quiet blade grinder for early mornings: Operates around 63 dB in our in-house test, lower than many traditional blade grinders. Use it at home or in a small office without filling the room with noise. Exact noise varies with bean hardness and fill level.
- Stainless steel blades in a compact ABS body: Food-grade stainless steel blades and a compact 4.7 x 4.7 x 6.77 inch footprint fit on a countertop or in a cabinet. Twist the lid to the lock position before pressing start; the safety lock will not run if the lid is open.
- What is in the box: 1 SHARDOR CG0802 electric coffee grinder, 1 2-in-1 scoop with built-in cleaning brush, 1 user manual, and a 2-year manufacturer warranty. The grinding bowl is built-in (not removable) for motor stability; use the brush to clean dry grounds.
When your grinder makes espresso difficult
An espresso grinder needs both a sufficiently fine range and adjustments small enough to dial in the coffee. Some grinders cannot grind fine enough, or have steps too large to make controlled changes. When comparing grinders for espresso, check whether they reach an espresso-fine setting, offer fine and repeatable adjustment, and explain their scale and operating directions clearly.
