Kindle power-button placement depends on the model. Amazon’s current setup guides put it on the top right side of the 2026 Kindle, the bottom edge of the Paperwhite, Colorsoft and Kindle (11th Generation), and a side edge of Kindle Scribe models. The original 2007 Kindle has its power and wireless buttons on the back. For other older models, check the guide for the exact generation rather than assuming the button is in the same place.
Kindle power-button locations by model
| Kindle model | Power-button location | What the documentation covers |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle (2026 release), including the Kids and Aluminum variants named in the setup guide | Top right side | Amazon’s 2026 Kindle setup guide specifies this position. |
| Kindle Paperwhite | Bottom edge | Amazon’s Paperwhite setup guide covers the family and includes Paperwhite Kids guidance. Check the guide for a specific older generation. |
| Kindle Colorsoft | Bottom edge | Amazon’s Colorsoft setup guide includes Kids and Signature charging details. |
| Kindle (11th Generation) | Bottom edge | Amazon’s 11th Generation setup guide treats this as a separate model from the 2026 Kindle. |
| Kindle Scribe, including the Scribe 3rd Generation page retrieved | Side edge | Amazon’s Scribe setup instructions identify a side-edge power button. |
| Kindle (1st Generation), released in 2007 | Back of the device | Amazon’s Kindle identification page shows the power and wireless buttons on the back. |
These locations apply to the models and families identified in Amazon’s linked documentation; they are not a complete map of every Kindle ever released.

Why the generation matters
“Kindle (11th Generation)” and “Kindle (2026 release)” are distinct entries in Amazon’s documentation, and their stated button locations differ: bottom edge for the 11th Generation and top right side for the 2026 release. Identify the device before following instructions for another model.
How to identify your Kindle
- On the Kindle, swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Select All Settings, then Device Options and Device Info. Amazon says device information is available there where supported.
- If you cannot open those menus, compare the device’s physical features with Amazon’s Kindle identification page, then find the matching generation in Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides.
Amazon notes that not every Kindle generation has been available in every marketplace, so model names and availability may vary by region.

What about older Kindle, Paperwhite, Voyage and Oasis models?
Amazon’s identification page can help distinguish many generations, but the cited pages do not establish the precise power-button position for every older Kindle, Paperwhite, Voyage or Oasis. Use the user guide for the identified generation; do not infer a location from a newer or similarly named model.
