Choose based on the games you actually play and where you want to play them. A gaming PC is the natural fit for a fixed desk setup and conventional computer use; a SteamOS handheld such as Steam Deck OLED puts a screen and game controls in one portable device. Before choosing the handheld, check Steam Deck compatibility for your must-play games—especially multiplayer titles that use launchers or anti-cheat systems.
Start with the games in your Steam library
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer lets many Windows games run on it. That does not mean every game behaves identically: Valve’s SteamOS documentation says games that do not run well are flagged through its Verified program so customers can see what is expected to work. Valve’s SteamOS documentation describes the program, while the Steam Deck product page provides device details.

Make a short list of the games you play most, then check each game’s current Steam Deck compatibility information before buying a SteamOS handheld. Include multiplayer games, titles that rely on a separate launcher, and games with anti-cheat systems; compatibility can be especially consequential for those cases. A rating is a guide to the expected SteamOS/Deck experience, not a guarantee that every title in your library will work the same way. The official references here do not establish the current rating for any particular game, so verify those titles individually.

Gaming PC: desk or living-room setup
A conventional gaming PC makes sense if you expect to play mainly at a desk or in a living room with a separate display and controls. The exact experience depends on the PC you choose, including its operating system and hardware. Check each game’s system requirements against the specific computer rather than assuming that every gaming PC will handle every title equally well.

SteamOS handheld: portable, controller-first play
Valve describes Steam Deck as a portable PC gaming device with an interface designed around gamepad play. It boots into Steam’s gaming interface, supports quick suspend and resume, and also has a desktop mode. That combination suits travel or couch play when you want an integrated screen and controls rather than a separate computer-and-display setup.
SteamOS support beyond Steam Deck is a changing platform matter. Valve says compatibility with other AMD-powered PCs has improved with Steam and SteamOS 3.8 updates, and expects most users to get SteamOS preinstalled on a Steam Deck or a device incorporating SteamOS. Check the current support information for any third-party device you are considering.

Compare the practical differences
| Decision point | Gaming PC | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Where you play | Typically a fixed desk or living-room setup, depending on the PC and peripherals selected. | Portable device with integrated screen and controls; Valve describes it as controller-first. |
| Game compatibility | Depends on operating system, hardware, and each game’s requirements. | Check Steam Deck compatibility for each important game. Proton supports many Windows games, but not all work equally well. |
| Unplugged play | A desktop requires mains power; laptop runtime varies by model and workload. | Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay, depending on content and settings. |
| Storage | Compare the selected PC’s included storage and upgrade options. | 512 GB or 1 TB internal storage, plus a UHS-I microSD slot. |
| Display and controls | Depends on the chosen PC, display, and peripherals. | 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED screen, up to 90 Hz, with integrated controls. |

Battery life is highly dependent on settings and game
Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED battery at 50 Wh and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay. The estimate assumes 30 FPS, 50% screen brightness, and 50% volume; demanding content or higher settings can drain the battery faster. Treat the range as Valve’s estimate rather than a guaranteed session length, particularly if you need long stretches away from power.

Choose storage for what you keep installed
Steam Deck OLED is listed in 512 GB and 1 TB configurations, and both include a high-speed microSD card slot supporting UHS-I. Think about how many games you want installed at once, then compare that need with the internal capacity and the option to expand it. The cited product specifications do not prescribe a particular card capacity.

The OLED model’s 7.4-inch screen has a 1280 × 800 resolution, HDR support, and a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. Valve also lists Wi-Fi 6E and USB-C display output. These are device specifications, not evidence that every game will run at the screen’s maximum refresh rate. If you expect to use an external display, confirm that the USB-C output and the rest of your setup meet your needs.

A practical decision checklist
- List your must-play games. Include multiplayer titles and games that depend on third-party launchers or anti-cheat.
- Check each title’s current Steam Deck compatibility. Treat Valve’s rating as guidance for the SteamOS/Deck experience, not as a blanket guarantee for your whole library.
- Decide where you will play most. Frequent travel and couch play favor an integrated handheld; a desk-oriented setup or separate display favors a conventional PC.
- Assess your need for unplugged sessions. Compare your expectations with Valve’s qualified OLED battery estimate, allowing for shorter runtime with demanding games or higher settings.
- Estimate how much you keep installed. Compare the PC’s chosen storage or the Deck OLED’s 512 GB and 1 TB options and microSD expansion.
- Verify the exact device and configuration. Confirm the operating system, hardware, ports, availability, and current SteamOS support for the model you intend to buy.
Valve lists OLED configurations and specifications on its product page, but stock can vary by region. Confirm current availability and configuration details where you plan to purchase.
