Which games and storefronts do you need?
Make a short list of your must-play games and identify their storefronts: Steam, Xbox/Game Pass, Epic, GOG, Battle.net, or another launcher. A handheld PC is not automatically compatible with every PC game. Launchers, anti-cheat systems, account requirements, and online connections can affect whether a title works smoothly—or at all.

For every essential game, check its current compatibility information for the specific handheld and operating system. Steam Deck runs SteamOS, based on Linux, and uses compatibility technology to run many Windows games; that does not guarantee every Steam title works. Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications describe the hardware, not compatibility for individual games.

ASUS describes the 2024 ROG Ally X as a Windows 11 handheld with access to stores including Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, and GOG. That breadth can suit a library spread across PC storefronts, but it is not a promise that every game, launcher, or anti-cheat setup behaves identically. Check the particular titles you care about.

When the ecosystem matters more than PC flexibility
If your priority is Nintendo-exclusive games, a Nintendo Switch 2 may fit better than a PC handheld. If you want to stream games from a PS5, PlayStation Portal is a different kind of device: TechRadar’s 2026 handheld buying guide describes it as streaming-only and requiring a constant internet connection. Retro handhelds are another distinct category for readers focused on retro libraries rather than current PC games.
How demanding are your games?
A lightweight indie game and a demanding new release can lead to different buying decisions. Compare performance only when the game, device configuration, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, and power mode are known. A benchmark without those details is not a reliable prediction of what you will see.

ASUS’s product pages include examples tied to named games and specific settings. For the 2024 ROG Ally X, ASUS identifies test conditions such as resolution and plugged-in power mode, and notes that performance can change as software and drivers mature. Those results are useful context, not a guarantee for your setup. How long do you need to play away from an outlet?
Battery capacity is not runtime. How long a handheld lasts depends on the game and settings, including resolution, frame rate, graphics load, and power mode. Think about the titles you actually play unplugged, then look for tests that match those conditions as closely as possible.

ASUS lists an 80Wh battery for the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X and claims “up to 2X battery life” compared with the 2024 ROG Ally X. That is a manufacturer comparison based on Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics, and Silent mode—not a general runtime estimate for other games or settings. ASUS lists a 60Wh battery for the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally; its battery comparisons with the prior ROG Ally likewise use specified games and settings. Treat each claim as conditional on its stated test.
Which operating system and setup fit you?
SteamOS may appeal if your library and preferred workflow fit Steam. Windows handhelds offer access to multiple PC storefronts, but they still involve the Windows interface and whatever setup a particular game or launcher requires. Choose based on the games you need to launch and the amount of troubleshooting or configuration you are comfortable handling—not just the number of stores listed on a product page.

Before buying, check whether each must-play game needs a launcher, account, anti-cheat service, or ongoing connection. For travel or unreliable internet, distinguish games that support local play from streaming or online-dependent experiences.
What screen, controls, and portability should you compare?
Display size and resolution, refresh rate, control layout, grip, weight, and operating-system navigation all shape how a handheld feels during real play. ASUS lists a 7-inch 1080p, 120Hz display on both 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models. That specification alone does not establish which device is most comfortable: hand size, grip, and control preferences are personal, and the available comparisons do not establish a controlled comfort ranking across all major handhelds.

If possible, try a device in hand before deciding. Consider how its size and controls suit the games you play—for example, whether you rely on sticks, triggers, a D-pad, or touch input—and whether you expect to carry it for long periods.
How much storage do you need, and what will it cost?
Compare the exact model and storage configuration, then check local pricing, availability, warranty, and any likely expansion cost. Game libraries can vary considerably in size, so a lower-capacity configuration may mean managing installs or adding storage.
ASUS says the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X can accept an off-the-shelf storage drive. Confirm the drive form factor and compatibility for the exact model before buying an upgrade. Lenovo’s Legion Go product page identifies another handheld PC option; verify the precise model and configuration there before comparing detailed specifications. Prices, configurations, warranty terms, and availability vary by region and can change, so check the current local listing.

A practical way to make the choice
- List three to five must-play games. Include the exact edition or multiplayer mode if that affects what you need.
- Record each game’s storefront and requirements. Note launcher, anti-cheat, account, and internet requirements.
- Check compatibility on the exact handheld and current OS. Do not assume a store listing means every game in that store works.
- Compare performance evidence that matches your use. Look for the same game, resolution, settings, frame cap, and power mode.
- Estimate unplugged play using your own games. Treat manufacturer battery figures as conditional when they rely on named titles and settings.
- Compare handling, storage, and total local cost. Include any needed expansion and verify the exact configuration and warranty.
- Choose the device that fits the whole library. If an essential game is unsupported or requires a setup you do not want, a stronger spec sheet will not fix that mismatch.
