How Many CPU Cores and GPU Compute Units Do You Need in a Gaming Handheld?

CPU-core and GPU-compute-unit counts alone cannot tell you how a gaming handheld will perform. Compare the games, resolution, settings and power conditions that matter to you.

There is no single CPU-core or GPU-compute-unit count that guarantees a good gaming-handheld experience. Choose by the games and settings you care about, then compare devices at the same resolution, frame-rate target, and power mode. Core and compute-unit counts describe different parts of a processor; neither number alone predicts game performance.

What CPU cores and GPU compute units tell you

CPU cores handle general-purpose work, including game logic and other tasks. GPU compute units (CUs) handle graphics processing. They are different resources, so adding the CPU-core count to the GPU-CU count has no useful meaning.

Counts also do not make processors directly comparable across graphics architectures. The examples below span RDNA 2, RDNA 3, and RDNA 3.5 graphics; a CU in one generation should not be assumed to perform like a CU in another. Clocks, power limits, memory, cooling, drivers, the operating system, and game optimization also shape results.

These specifications show the range of configurations on the market. They are product specifications, not a controlled performance ranking.

Example CPU Integrated graphics Stated power context
Steam Deck (Valve) Zen 2; 4 cores / 8 threads; 2.4–3.5 GHz 8 RDNA 2 CUs; 1.0–1.6 GHz; up to 1.6 TFLOPs FP32 4–15 W APU power; 16 GB LPDDR5 memory
AMD Ryzen Z1 6 cores / 12 threads 4 RDNA 3 compute units 9–30 W configurable TDP
AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme Zen 4; 8 cores / 16 threads; boost up to 5.1 GHz 12 RDNA 3 graphics cores 9–30 W configurable TDP
AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme Zen 5; 8 cores / 16 threads 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores 15–35 W configurable TDP

Valve lists the Steam Deck specifications; AMD publishes specifications for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme and its Ryzen Z1 and Z2 processor families. AMD’s family page describes processor capabilities; it does not establish which handheld models are available in every region.

How to choose for the games you play

  1. List your games. Consider whether you mainly play demanding newer releases, indie games, or older titles. The demands and achievable settings vary by game; ASUS likewise frames its Z1-versus-Z1 Extreme choice around the games a buyer plays.
  2. Set a realistic experience target. Decide what frame rate you want and what image-quality compromises you will accept. A stable 30 FPS target is a different requirement from pursuing a higher frame rate.
  3. Choose the resolution and settings you will actually use. Compare results only when resolution and graphics preset match. ASUS reports different results at 1080p Low and at 720p with RSR and higher presets; those are not equivalent tests.
  4. Account for how you will play. Distinguish plugged-in high-power operation from lower-power use away from an outlet. Valve specifies 4–15 W APU power for Steam Deck, while AMD lists 9–30 W configurable TDP for Z1 Extreme. These figures describe different products and do not, by themselves, predict battery runtime.
  5. Check the device-level details and price. Memory, cooling, drivers, operating-system support, and game optimization can affect observed performance. Compare current local device prices against your budget; processor specifications alone do not settle the value question.

How to read performance claims

Look for the game, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate measurement, power mode, and whether the handheld was plugged in. If those conditions differ, the figures do not provide a fair direct comparison.

ASUS’s ROG Ally Z1 versus Z1 Extreme comparison offers manufacturer guidance on choosing between those chips. ASUS’s ROG Ally (2023) product information presents game results at 30 W, plugged-in Turbo mode, with specified resolutions and presets; ASUS cautions that performance can vary with configuration and software or driver maturity. Treat those results as ASUS’s product testing, not an independent ranking of all handhelds, and do not infer FPS from a CPU or CU count alone.

So, how many do you need?

The product examples show that handhelds can use substantially different CPU and graphics configurations, but they do not establish a universal minimum. Use the counts as a quick description of hardware, not as a buying rule. A useful decision comes from matching a specific device’s performance evidence to your games, settings, power needs, and budget.
