How to Compare Handheld Gaming PCs by CPU, GPU, and Power Limits

A practical method for comparing handheld gaming PCs by exact processor, CPU and integrated graphics, power modes, benchmark conditions, and the rest of the device.

Compare handheld gaming PCs by exact processor model, CPU and integrated-GPU specifications, and the power modes the device actually offers—not by a chip family name or a single advertised frame-rate figure. A useful comparison also records the benchmark conditions and the handheld’s memory, screen, battery, storage, and operating system.

Start with the exact processor model

Family names can conceal meaningful differences. AMD’s current Ryzen Z-series specifications list these CPU and integrated-GPU configurations and configurable TDP ranges:

Processor CPU Integrated GPU Configurable TDP
Ryzen Z1 6 cores, 12 threads 4 RDNA 3 graphics cores 9–30W
Ryzen Z1 Extreme 8 cores, 16 threads 12 RDNA 3 graphics cores 9–30W
Ryzen Z2 Extreme 8 Zen 5 cores, 16 threads 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores 15–35W
Ryzen Z2 8 Zen 4 cores, 16 threads 12 RDNA 3 graphics cores 15–30W
Ryzen Z2 Go 4 Zen 3+ cores, 8 threads 12 RDNA 2 graphics cores 15–30W
Ryzen Z2 A 4 Zen 2 cores, 8 threads 8 RDNA 2 graphics cores 6–20W

Specifications are from AMD’s Ryzen Z-series product table, accessed in 2026. Check the precise processor in the device listing: “Z1” and “Z1 Extreme,” for example, share a family name but differ in CPU and graphics-core counts.

Compare CPU and GPU as separate resources

CPU: architecture, cores, and threads

Record the CPU architecture along with core and thread counts. These describe processor resources; they do not, by themselves, tell you how smoothly a particular game will run.

GPU: architecture and graphics cores

Record the integrated GPU’s architecture and graphics-core count separately. In the listed Ryzen Z-series processors, graphics are integrated into the APU rather than supplied by a separate desktop-style graphics card. More graphics cores are a specification, not a measured frame-rate score. Results also depend on power settings, memory, game workload, and other device details.

Distinguish chip power range from handheld power modes

A configurable TDP range describes processor power configurations, not a guarantee that a handheld will sustain its upper limit in every game or thermal condition. For each model, write down both the chip’s stated range and the device maker’s selectable modes. Note whether a result was recorded on battery or while plugged in.

Manufacturers’ own test descriptions illustrate why the mode matters. ASUS says its published ROG Ally X results use Turbo mode at 30W, plugged in with 65W power delivery; charts use 1080p or 720p depending on the game, and ASUS notes that results can vary as drivers and platform software mature. MSI describes its Claw A8 comparisons as 1080p/Low with FSR enabled, frame generation where applicable, and Manual Mode settings of 17-28-33W. Those are each company’s test conditions, not a standardized ASUS-versus-MSI comparison.

Compare benchmark results only when conditions match

Before treating two frame-rate results as comparable, check that the game and version, resolution, graphics preset, scaling, frame-generation setting, power mode, AC or battery state, memory configuration, and driver and software state are as similar as possible. If they are not, show the figures separately with their conditions rather than naming a winner.

  • Prefer results that state the game, resolution, preset, and power mode.
  • Check whether upscaling such as FSR or frame generation was enabled; generated frames and native rendering are not equivalent test conditions.
  • Keep plugged-in and battery results distinct.
  • Do not compare a manufacturer’s promotional claim with another device’s result as if both came from a controlled common test.

ASUS notes that its scores can change as drivers and platform software mature. MSI’s Claw A8 page reports promotional performance comparisons against Z1 Extreme and provides its own test conditions; those percentages are MSI-reported claims, not independent or universal findings. The available specifications and manufacturer tests do not establish a standardized cross-brand ranking.

Include the rest of the device in the comparison

The APU is only one part of a handheld. Use a table like this for the models you are considering, filling it from the exact regional SKU’s specifications and clearly labeled test results.

Comparison field What to record Why it matters
Processor Full APU model Prevents confusion between processors with similar family names.
CPU Architecture, cores, and threads Describes the CPU resources without treating core count as a gaming score.
Integrated GPU Architecture and graphics-core count Identifies the graphics configuration without implying a measured FPS result.
Power Chip configurable TDP range, device modes, and AC or battery state Separates a chip specification from the conditions under which it operates.
Benchmark Game and version, resolution, preset, scaling and frame generation, power mode, driver/software state, and RAM Makes performance figures interpretable.
Device Memory capacity and speed, display, battery capacity, storage, and operating system Captures important differences beyond the processor.

Memory is shared with integrated graphics on these systems, so record its capacity and configuration instead of assuming the GPU has separate memory. For example, ASUS lists the ROG Ally X (2024) RC72LA with 24GB of memory and an 80Wh battery. MSI lists the Claw A8 BZ2EM with an 80Wh battery, an 8-inch 120Hz VRR display, and Ryzen Z2 Extreme. The matching battery capacities do not establish matching runtime; workload, screen, settings, and device configuration affect how long a handheld lasts.

Check the exact model and regional configuration

Use the device maker’s page to verify the full model name and configuration before comparing or buying. ASUS’s ROG Ally X (2024) RC72LA specifications say it supports standard M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4 storage. That identifies the stated format for this model, but confirm compatibility and physical fit for the specific device before an upgrade. Specifications can differ by SKU or region; do not transfer a figure from one listing to every product with a similar name.

For historical context, ASUS’s May 11, 2023 ROG Ally launch announcement documents original Ally configurations with Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme. It is launch documentation, not a complete or current inventory of handhelds. AMD’s handheld portfolio page names product families from ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, and Valve; confirm detailed specifications against the exact maker listing for any model not covered above.
