How to Choose a Game Engine for an Indie Game

The right indie game engine is the one that fits your game, team, target platforms, and budget. Compare current terms and prototype the riskiest feature before choosing.

Choose the engine that best fits the game you intend to ship, the platforms it must run on, your team’s skills, and the licensing budget—not the engine with the biggest reputation. First rule out candidates that cannot meet a required platform or acceptable licensing terms. Then prototype the riskiest part of your game in the remaining engines before committing. There is no evidence-backed universal winner or general performance champion among Godot, Unity, and Unreal.

Start with your game’s requirements, not a popularity ranking

Write down what the finished game needs before comparing feature lists. A small 2D project, a stylized 3D game, and a visually demanding 3D production can place very different demands on rendering, asset workflows, physics, and tools. The official Godot FAQ covers its 2D and 3D workflows and asset importing; Epic positions Unreal for indie production and provides a digital asset ecosystem. Neither establishes that a particular genre belongs in one engine.

  • Game shape and camera: 2D or 3D, perspective, and the visual target.
  • Must-have mechanics and technology: for example, the riskiest gameplay feature, multiplayer, save/load, or a performance target.
  • Required release platforms: desktop, web, mobile, VR or spatial platforms, and consoles as applicable.
  • Team fit: existing engine experience, preferred scripting language, debugging, and collaboration workflow.
  • Budget and terms: subscriptions, royalties, seats, platform access, and any middleware needs.

These are project requirements, not a checklist where more features automatically mean a better choice. Godot’s official FAQ advises weighing language choice against familiarity, platform support, and language features. Try the actual workflow you will use rather than choosing by language reputation alone.

Check platform access and licensing before you invest

A platform can be a hard constraint. Confirm support for the specific engine version and export target, and distinguish the engine’s ability to export from your ability to obtain a platform SDK or approval. Console development is particularly important to verify early.

Engine What the published terms say What to verify for your project
Godot Godot is free and open-source under the MIT license. Its FAQ says it may be used for personal, non-profit, and commercial purposes. Observe MIT license conditions for redistributed copies. Verify the exact target, engine version, and any console or third-party export route. Godot license · Godot FAQ
Unity Unity Personal is free for eligible users below $200,000 in revenue and funding. Unity lists Pro at $2,310 per seat per year prepaid or $210 per month for 2026; its pricing page says Pro is required for businesses over $200,000 in revenue or funding. Unity announced a 5% Pro and Enterprise price increase effective January 12, 2026. Check current eligibility and regional pricing directly. Closed-console builds require an active Unity Pro subscription or a platform-holder Preferred Platform license key, as well as platform-holder approval. Unity Personal · Unity pricing updates
Unreal Engine Epic describes a 5% royalty on qualifying lifetime gross revenue above $1 million directly attributable to the Unreal product. Royalty details and exceptions depend on the applicable license and product category; confirm the terms that apply to your release. Console development also requires platform-holder approval to access SDKs. Unreal licensing · Unreal for indie games

The Unity prices and thresholds above are published terms, not a guarantee of what a particular team will pay: eligibility and regional costs can vary. Similarly, Unreal’s royalty description is not a blanket rule for every product. Recheck official terms before budgeting and before shipping.

Compare workflow and learning support against the real work

Documentation, tutorials, community answers, and specialist tools matter because they affect how your team solves day-to-day problems. Godot and Unity offer official learning and documentation resources, but the available evidence does not establish that one has better community response quality or is universally easier to learn. Review the documentation for your actual needs: input, animation, asset import, UI, deployment, and debugging, for example.

Popularity can help you estimate how familiar an engine may be to other developers, but it is not a quality verdict. In the Game Developers Conference’s 2025 State of the Game Industry report, Unity and Unreal were tied at 32% each as the most-used engines among survey respondents. That is a survey result, not a measure of all released games, indie-only adoption, ease of use, or suitability for your project.

Prototype the feature most likely to derail your choice

No comparable evidence establishes which engine is generally fastest to learn, prototype in, or run. Instead, test candidates using the same small slice of your game. Include the hardest mechanic or technical risk and enough of the asset pipeline to reveal the workflow you will actually depend on.

  1. List the one or two uncertainties most likely to change your engine choice, such as a core mechanic, asset import, save/load, multiplayer, or target-device performance.
  2. Build a representative slice in each shortlisted engine using the same requirements and, where practical, the same assets.
  3. Record what you observe: time spent reaching the intended result, friction in iteration and debugging, whether the required export target works, and any compromises against the game’s visual or feature needs.
  4. Compare those results with your team’s experience and the licensing and platform constraints—not with an assumed universal speed or performance ranking.

Make the decision in this order

  1. Eliminate engines that cannot reach a required platform, meet a necessary technical requirement, or fit your acceptable licensing terms.
  2. Compare the remaining candidates against the game’s actual visual needs, workflow, language fit, team familiarity, and learning resources.
  3. Prototype the riskiest representative feature and asset workflow in each serious candidate.
  4. Choose the engine that gives your team the most credible path to shipping this specific game, then revisit the decision if platform access or licensing terms change.
