How to Upgrade Laptop RAM and Check Whether It’s Soldered

You can upgrade laptop RAM only if the exact model and configuration have a removable memory slot with supported capacity remaining. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and service manual first: memory described as integrated into the system board is soldered, while a separate memory-module removal procedure indicates a socketed module. Some laptops have both.

Find out whether your laptop’s RAM is soldered

Start with the laptop’s full model number, machine type, or service tag—not just its product-family name. Different configurations in the same family can have different memory layouts. Find the identifier on the device label, in firmware or System Information, or on the manufacturer’s support page. Then open the specifications and service manual for that exact model and configuration.

Search the documentation for terms such as “memory,” “system board,” “integrated,” “onboard,” “soldered,” “SODIMM,” and “memory module.” If it says memory is integrated into the system board, that memory is not a removable module. If the manual provides a procedure to remove a memory module, that module is socketed. Check whether the manual describes secondary memory separately: a laptop can have soldered memory as well as one removable module.

For example, Dell’s Inspiron 5490 service manual says the primary memory module is integrated into the system board and scopes the removal procedure to a secondary module. The Vostro 5490 manual likewise distinguishes integrated primary memory from a removable secondary module.

Crucial 32GB DDR5 RAM Kit (2x16GB), 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory 262-Pin SODIMM, Compatible with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000, Black - CT2K16G56C46S5
  • Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
  • Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
  • Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8

A software utility’s slot count or a generic upgrade listing can help you investigate, but it does not prove that a slot is physically present or available. Verify the layout against the laptop maker’s documentation. A vendor selector, such as Crucial’s compatibility tool, is a useful additional compatibility check, not a substitute for the model-specific manual.

Check compatibility before buying RAM

Write down the installed memory and confirm the laptop’s supported total capacity, populated and available slots, module form factor, DDR generation, and supported speed. Check each detail in the manufacturer’s specifications for your configuration. Laptop RAM is not interchangeable just because two modules have the same capacity or are both described broadly as DDR memory.

  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR4 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 260-pin, PC Speed = PC4-25600, Voltage = 1.2V, Rank and Configuration = 1Rx16, 1Rx8 or 2Rx8
  • Form factor and DDR generation: Confirm the module type the laptop accepts, such as SODIMM, and the exact DDR generation. The notch must match the slot.
  • Capacity: Check both the supported system maximum and what can be installed in the removable slot. Account for any soldered memory and modules already fitted.
  • Speed: Use a speed supported by the laptop. Supported speeds and capacity limits vary by model and configuration.
  • Configuration: Confirm whether the existing module can remain alongside the proposed one, and whether the planned total fits the documented limits.

A product listing should state specifications such as DDR type, SODIMM form factor, voltage, and capacity. For instance, Crucial’s 8 GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM listing provides those details as an example of what to compare; it is not a recommendation for an unspecified laptop. Crucial also notes that memory performance depends on the original computer and selected upgrade.

If the module’s notch does not line up with the slot, stop. Crucial’s installation guide warns not to force a module when its groove and the slot ridge do not match.

Prepare using the laptop’s service manual

Read the exact model’s service procedure before opening the case. It specifies how to remove the cover, isolate power, and access memory; some laptops require a battery disconnect or other model-specific service steps. Use the tools and electrostatic-discharge precautions the manual specifies, and work on a stable, clean surface. Do not assume a teardown for another model—or even another laptop from the same brand—applies to yours.

If the case, battery, or memory module does not match the procedure, stop and confirm that you have the right documentation. Do not pry or force a component. If the manual’s steps are unclear or you are not comfortable carrying them out, have a qualified technician handle the upgrade.

Install the module and verify that it is detected

Follow the laptop maker’s removal and installation steps in order. As one model-specific example, Dell’s Latitude 5521 guide, published January 27, 2026, shows removing the cover, disconnecting the battery cable, releasing the memory module’s clips, and lifting it from its connector. For installation, it instructs the reader to align the notch with the slot, insert the module at an angle, and press it down until it clicks. Your laptop’s own manual takes precedence; this sequence is not universal.

  1. Open the laptop and isolate power as directed by its service manual.
  2. Remove or release the existing module only if the manual calls for it. Handle the module as instructed and avoid forcing the clips or connector.
  3. Align the new module’s notch with the slot. Insert and secure it using the angle and method specified for your laptop.
  4. Reassemble the laptop, reconnect power, and start it. Check the detected memory total in firmware or the operating system. In Windows, Crucial’s general guide suggests checking Installed Memory in System settings.

If the expected total does not appear, power down and follow the laptop and module instructions to check that the module is seated correctly; Crucial’s guide suggests reseating a module that is not detected. If the laptop fails to start or displays an error, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly forcing or removing parts.
