The safest furniture store is not necessarily the one with the lowest tag price. Choose the seller whose written policy gives you a realistic way to get the item into your home, report damage, return a poor fit, and obtain a repair or replacement when a defect appears. Compare the complete policy chain—delivery territory and charges, access requirements, inspection deadlines, return costs, exclusions, and warranty remedies—before you place the order.
Policies can change by seller, product, delivery address, order type, and date. Save the exact terms displayed for your item and location, together with your receipt and delivery promise. A verbal assurance from a salesperson is much harder to enforce than the written terms attached to your order.

Start with the policy chain, not the furniture photo
Online listings make dimensions, fabric, color, and price easy to compare. The expensive surprises usually appear elsewhere: a delivery surcharge for stairs, a failed-delivery fee because the sofa cannot turn through a hallway, a short damage-reporting deadline, or a return deduction that makes sending the item back uneconomical.
Recommended Free Tools
Evaluate each store on six practical outcomes:
- Delivered total cost: item price, taxes, delivery, assembly, stairs, long carries, surcharges, redelivery, pickup, return freight, and restocking.
- Access confidence: whether the packaged item can pass every part of the route and whether the chosen service will place and assemble it.
- Damage-remedy clarity: what you may inspect, what you must photograph, who receives the claim, and how quickly the seller responds.
- Return cost and effort: the deadline, condition requirements, exclusions, pickup responsibility, and deductions.
- Warranty protection: covered defects, duration, exclusions, geographic scope, and the available remedy.
- Policy clarity: whether the terms are specific enough to apply to your product, address, and order type.
A lower sticker price can be outweighed by delivery, failed-access, pickup, or restocking charges. Consumer Reports reported that 41 percent of online furniture buyers cited free shipping or delivery as one of the main reasons they selected a particular online retailer in its 2020 survey coverage. Treat “free delivery” as a starting point for questions, not proof that the delivered order is free of all charges.

Check delivery coverage and the true delivered price
Confirm territory and every possible fee
Enter your delivery ZIP or postal code before comparing prices. Ask whether the quoted service covers your region, and whether taxes or surcharges are calculated later. Get written answers about stairs, elevators, long carries from a truck, narrow streets, rural delivery, storage while you prepare a room, redelivery, and a missed appointment. Some policies charge when a crew arrives but cannot gain access; others charge for a second trip or make you arrange a new appointment.
Request an itemized estimate that separates the furniture price from delivery, assembly, and optional services. Confirm whether the delivery charge is refundable if you cancel, return the item, or refuse it because of damage. The Federal Trade Commission advises checking who pays return shipping, the return deadline, and any restocking fee before purchase.
Identify the service level
“Delivery” can mean several different services. Make the seller name the level included in your order:

| Doorstep or curbside | The carrier leaves the packaged item at a property entrance or curb. | Who moves it inside? Is a signature required? What happens if weather or security prevents drop-off? |
| Threshold | The carrier brings the package just inside an entry door. | Does “threshold” include a building lobby, apartment door, or only the first exterior entrance? |
| Room-of-choice | The crew carries the item to a room you select. | Are stairs, elevators, and long carries included? Is unpacking included? |
| White-glove placement | The crew brings the furniture in, positions it, and may remove packaging. | Is assembly included? Will the crew reconnect modular sections or attach legs? |
| Assembly service | The crew builds some or all of the item. | Which tasks are excluded, and who handles damage caused during assembly? |
Do not assume packaging removal, wall anchoring, old-furniture removal, or appliance-style installation is included. Have the exact inclusions printed on the order confirmation.
Measure the complete route before ordering
Measure the room and the route separately. Consumer Reports recommends measuring entryways, doorways, hallways, stairwells, and elevators. Compare both the packaged dimensions and the assembled dimensions; a piece that fits after assembly may be impossible to bring in as a carton.

Use a route checklist
- Record the narrowest exterior gate, building entrance, and front door opening.
- Measure interior doors, hallway widths, ceiling heights, and every turning point.
- Measure stair width, landing depth, railing obstructions, and the elevator door and interior.
- Compare those measurements with the carton’s length, width, height, and diagonal. Include pallet or protective packaging if the seller provides it.
- Check the assembled footprint, height, and clearance needed to rotate or recline the item in the room.
- Send unusual measurements, photos, or a simple floor plan to the seller and request a written fit assessment.
Ask what happens if the crew cannot pass the item. A refusal may not produce a full cash refund. RH’s terms state that furniture refused because it does not fit through an entryway may be refunded in merchandise or store credit only. That is a material difference from a cash refund and should be considered before scheduling delivery.
Plan for building and access rules
Apartment and condominium deliveries may require certificates of insurance, loading-dock reservations, elevator padding, or restricted delivery hours. Ask the building manager about these requirements before choosing a date. Confirm who books the elevator and who pays if the crew waits. For a rural or difficult-access address, ask whether a smaller final-mile carrier will take over and whether its rules differ from the seller’s headline policy.

Inspect before signing
Have a camera or phone ready and allow enough time for a deliberate inspection. Photograph every side of the carton before opening it, including shipping labels and punctures. After unpacking, photograph the item, hardware, and any damage in close-up and in context. Keep the packaging until the claim or return is resolved.
Read the delivery receipt before signing. RH states: “You must inspect and sign for furniture upon delivery.” A signature can establish that delivery was completed, so record visible damage on the delivery document rather than signing a clean receipt and relying on a later call.
Follow the shortest reporting deadline
Policies vary sharply. JCPenney says damage or defects must be reported within 48 hours. Ashley specifies three business days for covered online-delivery cases. These examples are not universal rules; they show why you should locate the deadline for your exact order before delivery day.

Use the seller’s required channel—online form, email, telephone department, or delivery portal—and keep the confirmation number. State the order number, delivery date, item and carton affected, a concise description, and the remedy you request. Attach dated photos and a copy of the signed delivery document. If a defect is discovered after unpacking, report it immediately and explain when and how it was found.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSeparate delivery damage from a later defect
A crushed carton, scratched frame, missing hardware, and a seam failure after normal use may be handled under different rules. The first may be a delivery claim; the second may be a warranty claim. Ask whether the seller will repair, replace a part, replace the entire item, collect it, or issue a refund, and whether labor or shipping is covered. Do not discard the item or arrange an independent repair until the seller tells you to do so in writing.
Compare return policies by cost, not just days
Read when the clock starts
Write down the number of days and the event that starts the clock: order date, shipment date, delivery date, or the date you receive an assembled item. JCPenney’s furniture policy states, “Furniture must be returned within 30 days of delivery.” Article allows 30 days from delivery in as-new condition but may deduct outbound and return shipping. A “30-day return” therefore does not have one universal meaning.
Check condition and packaging rules
Most furniture returns require unused or as-new condition, original packaging, all accessories, and a receipt or order record. Test fit and comfort carefully without removing protective materials you may need for a return. Ask whether a mattress, upholstered piece, assembled item, or floor sample has a different rule.
Identify exclusions before buying
Final-sale, clearance, outlet, custom, made-to-order, special-order, and personalized products commonly have limited or no change-of-mind return rights. Ashley excludes final-sale, clearance, special-order, and personalized items except for qualifying damage or defects. RH excludes final-sale, outlet, custom or made-to-order, and personalized items. Obtain confirmation of the classification for your exact SKU; a similar-looking item can have different terms.

Calculate the complete return deduction
Ask who pays outbound delivery, return freight, pickup, packaging, and restocking. JCPenney lists non-refundable delivery fees, a 15 percent restocking fee, and an $85 pickup fee for listed furniture returns. The deduction can turn a nominally refundable purchase into an expensive trial. Confirm whether you may arrange your own carrier, whether the seller must collect the item, and when the refund is issued after inspection.
| Return question | Write down the answer |
|---|---|
| Deadline and starting event | Number of days; delivery, shipment, or another trigger |
| Condition | As-new, unused, assembled, or packaging requirements |
| Exclusions | Final-sale, clearance, custom, personalized, special-order, or outlet status |
| Transport | Who pays outbound freight, return freight, pickup, and redelivery |
| Fees | Restocking, inspection, cancellation, or administrative deductions |
| Outcome | Cash refund, original payment method, exchange, store credit, repair, or replacement |
| Timing | When the seller receives the item and when funds are credited |
Read the warranty as separate protection
A return right addresses whether you can change your mind within a limited period. A warranty addresses a covered defect under its own conditions. After a short delivery-damage deadline expires, the seller may direct you to the manufacturer’s warranty process instead of accepting a return.
Extract the warranty’s operative terms
- Covered defects and the duration of coverage.
- Geographic scope and whether coverage is limited to the original purchaser.
- Proof of purchase, registration, serial number, and required maintenance records.
- Exclusions such as normal wear, stains, fading, misuse, commercial use, accidents, or unauthorized repairs.
- Whether labor, inspection, replacement parts, shipping, and in-home service are included.
- The remedy: repair, replacement part, full replacement, prorated credit, or refund.
- The claim channel and response or inspection procedure.
- Whether replacement parts remain available for the expected life of the product.
Connecticut consumer guidance advises buyers to pursue warranty claims with the retailer or manufacturer. Keep both contacts. If the seller says a manufacturer must handle the claim, request that direction in writing and preserve your original order documents.

Comparing headline policies is misleading when stores quote different service levels. Use the same hypothetical order—item, quantity, destination, floor, elevator, and assembly needs—and score each seller.

Give each category a score such as 0 (unacceptable), 1 (uncertain), or 2 (clear and workable). Do not let a high score for style or price conceal a zero for access or returns. If a policy is silent on a cost that could materially change the purchase, treat the answer as uncertain and ask before ordering.

Keep a complete record from checkout through resolution
The FTC recommends retaining the company name, order details, price, return policy, shipping promise, communications, and payment records. Save a PDF or screenshot of the product page, delivery terms, warranty, and return policy on the purchase date. Record the SKU, finish, dimensions, seller of record, delivery address, and promised date.
After delivery, retain photos, the signed receipt, carton labels, claim numbers, emails, chat transcripts, and names of representatives. If you speak by phone, send a short follow-up email summarizing what was agreed. These records make it easier to prove the deadline was met and to distinguish a delivery claim from a warranty claim.
A practical pre-order checklist
- Have I measured every doorway, hallway, turn, stair, elevator, and ceiling obstacle?
- Did I compare packaged and assembled dimensions, including diagonal clearance?
- Does my ZIP or postal code qualify for the quoted service?
- What exactly is included: doorstep, threshold, room placement, unpacking, packaging removal, or assembly?
- Are stairs, long carries, elevator reservations, redelivery, or failed access charged separately?
- Can I inspect before signing, and what is the damage-reporting deadline for this order?
- What photos, packaging, receipt, and claim channel are required?
- When does the return clock start, and what condition must the item be in?
- Is the item final-sale, clearance, custom, made-to-order, special-order, or personalized?
- Who pays delivery, return freight, pickup, and restocking, and how much are those charges?
- What does the warranty cover, for how long, and who performs the remedy?
- Have I saved the exact terms and received answers to unusual access questions in writing?
What to do when something goes wrong
The item cannot enter the home
Do not authorize disposal or an improvised disassembly. Photograph the route and packaging, notify the seller immediately, and ask for the written failed-access remedy. Check whether the policy provides cash, merchandise credit, rescheduling, or a deduction.
The item arrives visibly damaged
Photograph the carton and item, note the damage on the delivery record, and contact the specified claim channel within the shortest stated deadline. Keep all materials and request a written case number and remedy timeline.
You discover a defect after the return window
Locate the warranty document, verify that the problem is not an exclusion such as misuse or normal wear, and submit proof of purchase and photographs through the stated channel. Ask whether labor and shipping are covered and whether the retailer or manufacturer owns the next step.
You want to return an item that simply does not work in the room
Check the condition, packaging, exclusion, and deadline rules before moving it again. Request a written estimate of pickup, freight, restocking, and other deductions so you can compare the likely refund with the cost of keeping or reselling the item.
The decision rule
Choose the store that gives you a workable answer to every high-cost question before checkout: can the packaged item reach its destination, what will delivery really cost, how quickly must damage be reported, what will a return deduct, and what remedy does the warranty provide? If any answer depends on an unrecorded verbal promise, pause the purchase until the seller supplies terms tied to your product and address.
