Before comparing models, decide what you want to track, confirm that the device works with your phone, and check how its GPS, battery, water rating and paid features fit your routine.
Start with what you want to track
Ask, “What do I want to track?” Choose one or two jobs first: everyday movement, sleep habits, gym sessions, heart-rate awareness or outdoor routes. A simpler band may cover basic activity and reminders; outdoor training may make route tracking and workout controls more important. You do not need every sensor or metric.

Fitness trainer Curt Fischer, CPT, told Cleveland Clinic that trackers provide information about your body and activity, while their value depends on how you use that information to stay consistent and keep moving. They do not improve health on their own; wearing the device, reviewing its stats and staying active matter. Cleveland Clinic’s overview of fitness trackers is dated April 8, 2026.

Choose a form you will actually wear
Consider when and where you expect to wear the device. Wrist-worn trackers and watches suit many people who want activity or workout information close at hand; a clip-on or ring may better suit someone who dislikes a wrist device or has a particular tracking preference. Form and comfort vary, so try a device on if possible.

If sleep tracking matters, ask yourself, “Will I wear it to bed?” An overnight feature is only useful if wearing the device feels comfortable. Also consider the charging routine: a tracker that needs frequent charging may be inconvenient if you want to wear it overnight or throughout the day. Check the exact model’s battery claims and charging method; there is no single battery expectation that applies to all trackers.
Check phone and app compatibility before buying
Ask, “Will it work with my phone?” Check the manufacturer’s current requirements for the exact model and your phone’s operating system. Some wearable ecosystems are brand-specific, and device compatibility can affect setup, syncing and access to features.
Check the companion app as well as the hardware. Look at how it presents the activities and measurements you care about, and confirm that the features you intend to use are available in your region. Product lineups, supported phones and health features can change, so verify the current specifications before purchase.
For outdoor routes, decide whether you need built-in GPS
Ask, “Do I need built-in GPS?” A device with built-in GPS can record a route without relying on the phone’s GPS sensors, but using GPS can drain the wearable’s battery more quickly. Connected GPS instead relies on the phone’s sensors, so the phone must be nearby and the app needs appropriate location permissions.

Google’s instructions for Fitbit devices and Pixel Watch explain these GPS differences and requirements. Check Google’s GPS guidance for the supported setup and device-specific details. If you usually carry your phone on a walk or run, connected GPS may suit you; if you want to leave it behind, look for built-in GPS on the specific model.
Judge each measurement on its own merits
Accuracy is not the same for every metric. Cleveland Clinic says heart-rate tracking tends to be fairly accurate when the tracker is worn properly, while some advanced measurements are estimates and can be off. Treat wearable readings as useful for awareness and trends, not as exact measurements or medical diagnoses.
Decide which measurement matters to you, then look for information about that metric on the exact device you are considering. Do not assume that a tracker’s many displayed numbers are equally reliable or that more sensors automatically make it a better choice.
Check water resistance and the band together
Do not infer that a tracker is suitable for swimming from a generic “water resistant” label. Check the model’s water-resistance rating and the band material separately: the band may have different care limits from the watch or tracker itself.

Apple’s support documentation, for example, says Apple Watch Series 2 and later have a 50-meter water-resistance rating under ISO 22810:2010, while some listed band materials are not recommended for water or workouts. That is an Apple-specific example, not a specification for other trackers. Review Apple’s guidance on wearing Apple Watch, or consult the relevant maker’s documentation for another device.

Dedicated fitness watches are also worth comparing with basic bands if your plans go beyond general activity. Garmin’s US category covers health and fitness tracking wearables, while its Canadian guide distinguishes watches by intended activity, from wellness and gym use to endurance training. Those guides illustrate different use cases; they do not establish that one brand or model is best. Browse Garmin’s US activity and fitness tracker category and read Garmin’s Canadian smartwatch guide for examples of how device types are positioned.

- Name the job: Write down one or two priorities, such as sleep, gym sessions or outdoor routes.
- Pick a wearable form: Decide where you will wear it and whether you are comfortable keeping it on overnight.
- Verify compatibility: Confirm support for your exact phone, region and intended features.
- Choose GPS behavior: Decide whether carrying a phone for connected GPS works for you or whether built-in GPS is worth considering.
- Check the details that affect your routine: Review charging, water rating, band material and the reliability of the specific metric you care about.
- Calculate ongoing cost: Separate included functions from subscription features, then consider whether the app makes the information easy for you to understand.
When choosing the best fitness tracker for your needs, favor the device you can comfortably wear, charge and understand—not the one with the longest feature list.
