1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best financial adviser is not the one with the most impressive title or the lowest advertised fee. It is the professional whose services match your decisions, whose registration and disciplinary record you can verify, whose total compensation you understand in dollars, and whose conflicts, limitations and responsibilities are documented before you sign. For U.S. investors, use a repeatable process: define the work, check the person and firm, compare the complete cost, investigate incentives, test relevant experience, read the disclosures and interview the candidate with the same questions you use for every finalist.
Start with the job you need done
Write down the decisions for which you want help before speaking with advisers. “Long-term wealth planning” can mean very different assignments, and an adviser who is well suited to one may not provide another. Your list might include building an investment policy, managing an existing portfolio, planning retirement income, investing with taxes in mind, coordinating insurance, or creating a broader financial plan.

Turn goals into a service brief
- Investment advice: You need recommendations about asset allocation, securities or funds, and how those choices fit your objectives and risk tolerance.
- Ongoing portfolio management: You want someone to monitor the account, rebalance it, and make agreed changes over time.
- Retirement planning: You need projections, withdrawal decisions, Social Security or pension coordination, and a plan for changing spending needs.
- Tax-aware investing: You want investment decisions coordinated with tax rules and, where appropriate, your tax professional.
- Comprehensive planning: You want several areas—cash flow, debt, insurance, estate issues, education funding and investments—considered together.
Ask each candidate whether they provide every service on your list directly, coordinate with another professional, or leave it outside the engagement. SEC guidance describes investment advisers as potentially offering ongoing advice, monitoring, asset-allocation guidance and financial planning, but the precise service is controlled by the relationship agreement.
Confirm practical boundaries
Ask whether the adviser has an account minimum, a planning-fee minimum, a required platform or a limited list of investments. Find out how often the relationship is reviewed, what “ongoing” means, and whether you can buy a one-time plan without transferring assets. If the adviser will coordinate with an accountant or attorney, ask who is responsible for each decision and how information is shared.

Understand the service model before comparing names
Brokerage and investment-advisory services can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. The professional’s legal capacity, compensation and obligations depend on the service you receive and the agreement you sign. Form CRS is intended to help retail investors compare services, fees, costs, conflicts, standards of conduct and disciplinary history.
| What to compare | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Service capacity | Are you acting as an investment adviser, a broker, or both for this account? | The capacity can affect how recommendations are delivered, how the professional is paid and which disclosures apply. |
| Decision authority | Will you make trades without asking me each time, or will I approve every transaction? | You need to know who controls implementation and how quickly decisions can be made. |
| Continuity | Who monitors the relationship and who covers when the named adviser is unavailable? | A polished first meeting is not the same as dependable long-term service. |
| Scope | Which planning topics are included, excluded or billed separately? | A broad promise may become a narrow investment-only engagement once the contract is read. |
Do not choose a model solely because it sounds more consumer-friendly. Compare the actual service, capacity, disclosures and contract for your circumstances.
Verify both the individual and the firm
A website, referral or professional title is not a registration check. Search the person and the firm in official regulator databases before discussing a transfer of assets. Investor.gov’s investment-professional search can show registration information, Form CRS and background details. FINRA BrokerCheck is an official source for broker and firm records and also provides access to investment-adviser information. State securities regulators may hold additional records, particularly for state-registered firms.

- Search the firm separately. Confirm that the person is actually associated with the organization named in the proposal.
- Read the current Form CRS and note the services, fees, conflicts, standards of conduct and disciplinary disclosures.
- Open available background information and review employment history, licenses, customer disputes, regulatory actions and bankruptcies where reported.
- Ask the candidate to explain any item you do not understand. Record what happened, when it happened and how it was resolved.
- Repeat the check immediately before signing if the selection process takes several months.
Registration is a threshold check, not an endorsement or a guarantee of good advice. A clean search does not establish that the relationship is suitable, and a disclosed event does not automatically disqualify someone; the facts and resolution matter.

Compare the complete cost in dollars
Request a written fee schedule and a dollar estimate for an account size similar to yours. A percentage can look small while becoming a significant recurring amount as assets grow. Ask how the charge changes with account size, whether planning is included, and whether the adviser receives compensation from a product provider, a transaction or a referral.
| Cost category | What it can include | Questions for the adviser |
|---|---|---|
| Adviser compensation | Ongoing asset-based fees, hourly charges, a fixed planning fee, commissions or a combination. | What is the rate, billing frequency and minimum? Is it charged on cash, borrowed money or only invested assets? |
| Transaction and account charges | Trading commissions, markups or markdowns, account-service charges, wire fees and miscellaneous brokerage fees. | Which charges apply to a typical year for my account, and who receives each one? |
| Investment expenses | Fund operating expenses, sales loads, surrender charges and other product-level costs. | Can you show the expense for each proposed holding and explain lower-cost alternatives? |
| Retirement-plan costs | Plan administration, recordkeeping or investment fees when an employer plan is involved. | Will your recommendation require moving assets, and what fees would the new arrangement add? |
| One-time or conditional charges | Plan preparation, account closure, transfer, tax-document or termination fees. | What could I owe if I pause the service, change advisers or withdraw the money? |
Not every fee applies to every investor. The signed agreement, fee schedule and investment documents control. Ask the SEC’s suggested question in plain language: "Help me understand how these fees and costs might affect my investments. If I give you $10,000 to invest, how much will go to fees and costs, and how much will be invested for me?" Require an answer that separates adviser compensation, account charges and investment expenses rather than presenting one blended percentage.
Do not assume one fee model is always cheaper. A low percentage may exclude planning or carry product charges; a fixed plan may be economical for a complex project but unsuitable if you need monitoring. Compare the projected dollar cost for the same services and account size.
Investigate compensation and conflicts
How a professional is paid can create incentives that affect recommendations. Ask whether compensation changes by product, account size, transaction, insurance sale, referral or proprietary investment. Ask whether the firm receives payments, revenue sharing, shelf-space compensation or other benefits from providers. Then ask how the conflict is disclosed, limited or managed and what products or services are unavailable to you as a result.

- Does the adviser receive more for recommending one fund, annuity, insurance policy or account type over another?
- Can the adviser recommend products outside the firm’s preferred or proprietary menu?
- Are there sales contests, bonuses, quotas or referral arrangements?
- Is the adviser required to use a particular custodian, platform or model portfolio?
- Will the firm or an affiliate earn money from cash balances, securities lending or other account activity?
An investment adviser must act in the client’s best interest and not put the adviser’s interest ahead of the client’s, but that standard does not make every conflict disappear. The useful analysis is specific: identify the capacity, service, payment, disclosure and contractual limitation that apply to your account.
Evaluate credentials and relevant experience
Ask what each license or designation means, how it was earned, what continuing education is required and which activities it permits. Investor titles vary, and some can correspond to limits on the products a professional may sell. Initials after a name are a prompt for questions, not proof of quality.
Match experience to your situation
Describe the facts that make your case unusual: concentrated employer stock, stock options, a business sale, a blended family, an inheritance, a special-needs dependent, cross-border assets, early retirement, variable income or a need for sustainable withdrawals. Ask for examples of similar work, what the adviser actually did and which parts were handled by another professional. You are testing relevance, not seeking a promise of investment performance.

Ask how investments are selected, how risk is measured, what triggers a change and who has final authority. Find out whether recommendations are restricted to a limited product set and why. Read the disclosures and proposed agreement
Request the current Form CRS, Form ADV Part 2 brochure and supplement when applicable, the complete fee schedule and the proposed client agreement. Read them before transferring money or granting trading authority.
- Scope: Confirm every service included, excluded or billed separately.
- Cost: Match each verbal quote to a rate, dollar amount, billing method and possible additional expense.
- Responsibilities: Identify what you must provide, what the adviser monitors and what requires your approval.
- Custody: Confirm where assets are held, who can withdraw money and how statements are delivered.
- Termination: Check notice requirements, refunds, transfer charges and what happens to unfinished planning work.
- Contact: Identify the person who handles routine questions and the escalation path for complaints.
If the agreement uses a term that conflicts with the presentation, pause and request a written explanation. Do not rely on an email promise that is absent from the contract or disclosure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a consistent interview checklist
Ask every finalist the same core questions, then add questions tied to your circumstances. Investor.gov’s conversation starters include these exact prompts:
Recommended Free Tools
- "Given my financial situation, should I choose an investment advisory service? Should I choose a brokerage service? Should I choose both types of services? Why or why not?"
- "How will you choose investments to recommend to me?"
- "What is your relevant experience, including your licenses, education and other qualifications? What do these qualifications mean?"
- "Help me understand how these fees and costs might affect my investments. If I give you $10,000 to invest, how much will go to fees and costs, and how much will be invested for me?"
- "How might your conflicts of interest affect me, and how will you address them?"
- "As a financial professional, do you have any disciplinary history? For what type of conduct?"
- "Who is my primary contact person? Is he or she a representative of an investment adviser or a broker-dealer? Who can I talk to if I have concerns about how this person is treating me?"
Follow up on the answers
Ask the adviser to demonstrate, rather than merely describe, the service. Request a sample meeting calendar, a sample report with personal information removed, a written investment policy or an explanation of how a cash-flow review would work. Ask how often you receive statements, what response time to expect and how the firm handles incapacity, staff turnover or a market crisis.
Best Value
Compare finalists on the same axes
Put the answers in a side-by-side worksheet. The point is not to create a mathematically precise ranking; it is to prevent a persuasive personality, a famous title or a single fee number from dominating the decision.
| Axis | Record for each candidate |
|---|---|
| Scope and continuity | Services included, monitoring frequency, account minimums, backup contact and planning coordination. |
| Relevant experience | Comparable client situations, years performing the work and tasks handled personally. |
| Registration and history | Individual and firm registrations, Form CRS, employment history and explanation of every disclosed event. |
| Compensation and total cost | Adviser payment, account charges, product expenses, minimums, one-time fees and projected annual dollars. |
| Conflicts and limits | Product restrictions, referral payments, proprietary products and the stated conflict controls. |
| Investment approach | Selection process, diversification, rebalancing, tax awareness and who makes decisions. |
| Contract and custody | Agreement terms, cancellation, custody, withdrawal authority and statement arrangements. |
| Communication | Primary contact, meeting cadence, response expectations and complaint escalation. |
Choose the candidate whose documented service and working relationship fit your needs. A lower fee is not a bargain if it omits the planning you require, and a higher fee is not justified merely by a prestigious designation.
Recognize reasons to pause
- The adviser will not identify the legal entity, registration status or capacity in which they are acting.
- You receive a verbal fee quote but no written schedule or dollar example.
- The candidate dismisses questions about conflicts, product limits or disciplinary records.
- Projected returns are guaranteed, pressure is applied to sign immediately, or a “limited-time” product is emphasized.
- The agreement differs from the presentation and the adviser will not correct it in writing.
- You are asked to send money to an individual, use an unfamiliar custodian or grant broad authority without a clear explanation.
- The firm cannot explain who will provide ongoing service after the initial sale or plan.
A pause is appropriate whenever you cannot independently verify the person, firm, cost or custody arrangement. You can ask a state securities regulator or another official consumer-protection resource how to interpret a record before proceeding.
Set the relationship up for long-term success
Before implementation, write down your goals, time horizon, liquidity needs, acceptable losses, tax constraints and responsibilities. Confirm how changes are approved and how disagreements are handled. Keep copies of the agreement, disclosures, fee schedules, statements and meeting notes in a secure location.
At each scheduled review, check whether the service still matches your life: income, family, health, employment, tax status and goals may change. Review the actual dollars charged, the investments used, the advice received and the contact person. If the relationship no longer fits, follow the contract’s termination and transfer process and obtain final statements.
What this process can—and cannot—establish
Due diligence can show whether a professional is registered, what services and fees are disclosed, how compensation may create conflicts, whether experience is relevant and what the contract requires. It cannot predict market returns, eliminate investment risk or prove that one adviser will outperform another. The decision remains a judgment about fit, transparency, cost and service for your circumstances.
This guide is for U.S. readers because it relies on SEC, FINRA and state-regulator systems. Registration regimes and consumer protections differ elsewhere. Recheck the candidate’s current registration, Form CRS, Form ADV, fee schedule, disciplinary record, contract and relevant licenses at the time you hire. Nothing here is individualized investment, legal or tax advice.
