How to Choose a Factory-Building Board Game

Choose the game that matches the factory experience you want. Brass: Birmingham is the best all-round choice for a deep industrial economy with shared infrastructure and strong interaction. Factory Funner is the better pick for a short, highly visual puzzle about physically fitting machines and pipes. Furnace suits players who want auctions and resource-conversion engine building in a compact session. If oil logistics and market timing are your priority, add Pipeline to the shortlist.

The phrase “factory-building” covers several very different mechanisms. Use player count, playing time, spatial pressure, economic complexity, interaction and teaching difficulty—not the theme alone—to make the choice.

Quick comparison

Game Players Playing time Central experience Best for
Brass: Birmingham 2–4 60–120 minutes Industrial network, hand management and market economy Players who want a substantial economic strategy game with shared infrastructure
Factory Funner 1–6 20–40 minutes Spatial pipe-and-machine puzzle Solo play, larger groups and a literal factory-layout challenge
Furnace 2–4 30–60 minutes Auction-driven company acquisition and resource conversion Groups that prefer bidding and engine building to map networks
Pipeline Not stated in the published rules reference Not stated in the published rules reference Refinery logistics, oil markets, contracts and network efficiency Players drawn to specialist logistics and timing in an oil-refining setting

These are publisher or distributor specifications, not independent playtime tests. Brass: Birmingham’s 2–4-player, 60–120-minute specification comes from Roxley Games’ 2026 product page. Factory Funner’s 1–6-player, 20–40-minute specification comes from Asmodee UK’s 2026 listing. Furnace’s 2–4-player, 30–60-minute specification comes from Asmodee UK’s 2026 listing.

What “factory-building” means in each game

A factory theme can describe a shared industrial economy, a physical layout puzzle, an auction engine or a specialized logistics simulation. Identifying the mechanism first prevents a disappointing purchase.

Brass: Birmingham: an industrial network and market economy

Brass: Birmingham portrays competing entrepreneurs in England’s West Midlands during the Industrial Revolution, from 1770 to 1870. It is a heavy hand-management, network-building economic game in which your decisions are tied to a common board rather than an isolated personal factory.

You build canals and rails, develop industries and manage the resources those industries need. The industrial system includes cotton mills, coal mines, iron works, manufacturers, potteries and breweries. Coal, iron and beer are not decorative resources: their availability and movement affect when your industries can operate and when they can be sold.

Your score and income emerge from a changing industrial network. A useful connection may help another player as well as you, so the best move is often the one that improves your timing, access or market position rather than the one that produces the most immediately visible machinery. This makes the game feel like building an economy around factories, not simply placing factory tiles.

Factory Funner: a spatial pipe-and-machine puzzle

Factory Funner is the most literal factory-layout game in this group. Each round asks you to arrange machines, supply tanks and reservoirs, then connect inputs and outputs with pipes so the production system works and earns money.

The central constraint is physical space. A machine that fits neatly now may block a future connection, while a short route can leave awkward dead ends elsewhere on the board. The design therefore rewards preserving options, not just completing the current connection. BoardGameGeek’s description identifies simultaneous machine selection, eight rounds and the need to maintain future connection possibilities as defining features.

Selection is interactive: players choose machines at the same time, and someone else may take the tile you wanted. The pressure comes from combining a real-time-feeling selection moment with a careful, visible puzzle afterward. The Asmodee UK listing describes it as a game where players lay pipe and daisy-chain machines together.

Furnace: auctions feeding a conversion engine

Furnace presents factory building through ownership and processing rather than a shared map. Players acquire companies, extract resources and process them through combinations that improve their production engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its auction structure is the key source of interaction. Companies appear in a common row, and players bid with discs valued from 1 to 4. Winning a company is only the beginning: the value of an acquisition depends on how its conversion effects combine with the rest of your corporation. A modest card can be powerful when it closes a conversion chain, while an expensive card can be inefficient if it duplicates capabilities you already have.

This is a shorter engine-building Eurogame with a 19th-century capitalist theme. It feels like assembling a portfolio of industrial companies, not laying out a room-sized plant.

Pipeline: a refinery-logistics alternative

Pipeline is worth considering when “factory” means refinery operations and market logistics. Its published rules center on building an efficient refinery network, hiring experts and managing the logistics of buying and selling refined oil. That emphasis makes it a specialist comparison rather than a direct substitute for every game above.

If your favorite part of an industrial game is contract timing, product movement and market decisions, Pipeline may be the closest thematic match. The published rules do not establish a player-count or duration specification, so verify the edition’s box or publisher information before buying for a particular group.

Choose by the decision that matters most

When session length and group size come first

Start with the table’s hard limits. Factory Funner is the only option here with an officially cited solo mode and support for up to six players. Its 20–40-minute length also makes it the easiest to fit into a lunch break, a second game night slot or a mixed-experience gathering.

Furnace occupies the middle ground at 30–60 minutes for two to four players. It is long enough for an engine to develop but short enough that a new player can usually see the entire arc in one sitting.

Brass: Birmingham is the commitment choice: two to four players and 60–120 minutes. The upper end matters when the group is learning, pausing to interpret options or playing with deliberate analysis. It rewards reserving a full session rather than squeezing it into a crowded evening.

Pipeline’s published material does not give a comparable player-count or time figure. Treat it as a thematic option to investigate separately, not as a guaranteed fit for a particular schedule.

When spatial pressure is the attraction

Choose Factory Funner if you want every placement to have a visible geometric consequence. You must fit machines and connectors, route inputs and outputs, and leave enough room for later choices. The puzzle is not solved when one machine works; it is solved when the whole layout remains productive and flexible through the rounds.

Neither Brass: Birmingham nor Furnace makes physical adjacency the central challenge. Brass uses a shared geographical network, but its difficult questions concern timing, resources, development and sales. Furnace’s layout is primarily conceptual: the challenge is arranging company effects into an efficient conversion engine.

When economic depth matters most

Brass: Birmingham offers the broadest economic system in this comparison. Income, resources, industry development, transport and sales interact across a common board. Because the network changes as players build, a plan that was strong early may become expensive or blocked later. You are evaluating not only your own engine but also how other players’ construction changes the opportunities available to you.

Furnace compresses economics into acquisition and conversion. Its decisions are dense but narrower: identify valuable companies, bid without overpaying and chain their effects. Factory Funner’s profitability follows from a successful physical layout rather than a fluctuating industrial market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When interaction is the deciding factor

Brass: Birmingham has the strongest shared-board interaction. Players compete for opportunities while using a network and market that everyone can affect. A rail or canal decision can alter access and timing for several players.

Factory Funner’s interaction is concentrated in simultaneous machine selection. The tile another player takes can force you to redesign your plan, and the best choice may be the one that preserves more future options rather than the one with the highest immediate output.

Furnace places interaction in auctions and card availability. Bidding pressure changes the cost of a company, and a card removed from the common row may prevent another player from completing a conversion chain.

Pipeline, based on its published rules, emphasizes logistics and market timing. Its interaction should be evaluated through the edition’s complete rules if direct competition over contracts or oil markets is important to you.

Detailed buying guide by player type

For a deep two-player strategy game

Choose Brass: Birmingham when both players enjoy planning several turns ahead, adapting to a common board and learning through repeat plays. Two players still face the game’s network and resource relationships, but the experience is more demanding than a quick head-to-head puzzle. Allow extra time for the first session.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Choose Furnace for a shorter two-player contest built around auctions and engine efficiency. It gives both players repeated opportunities to assess a common row and decide whether a company is worth the bid. The lower time commitment makes it easier to play multiple rounds and refine bidding judgment.

Factory Funner also supports two players, but its appeal is the spatial puzzle rather than prolonged economic confrontation. It is the better choice when both players want to compare layouts and solve tight connection problems in under an hour.

For a solo player

Factory Funner is the clear choice among these options because Asmodee’s listing officially supports one player. Its solo value comes from the layout challenge: you can focus on fitting machines, routing pipes and preserving connection options without negotiating an auction or shared market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brass: Birmingham and Furnace are listed for two to four players. Do not assume an official solo mode from the player counts provided here; check the specific edition if solo play is essential.

For six players or a mixed group

Factory Funner is the only game in this comparison with a published six-player capacity. Its simultaneous selection system helps keep a larger group engaged, although the table still needs enough room for each player’s layout.

Brass: Birmingham and Furnace stop at four players in the published product specifications. Adding house rules or unofficial variants changes the experience and should not be treated as equivalent to an official player count.

For players new to modern strategy games

Furnace is often the gentlest entry if the group understands auctions and simple resource conversion. The 30–60-minute range lets players see a complete engine without committing to a long campaign of mistakes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Factory Funner is approachable in length but can still be decision-dense. A new player must understand both the immediate connection and the space needed for later machines. The physical board makes errors easy to see, which can help teaching, but it does not remove the need to plan.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Brass: Birmingham has the heaviest teach of the three. GamesRadar describes its flow as complex and unfamiliar for new players. Expect to explain hand management, network construction, industry development, resources, selling and scoring in context rather than in a single short briefing. Repeat plays are valuable because the first game is largely about learning how the systems interact.

For an industrial-revolution theme

Brass: Birmingham is the strongest match. Its setting explicitly covers the West Midlands from 1770 to 1870, and its cotton mills, coal mines, iron works, manufacturers, potteries and breweries create a broad industrial ecosystem.

Furnace also uses a 19th-century capitalist setting, but the theme is expressed through acquiring companies and building a corporation. Factory Funner is more abstract and functional: pipes, tanks and machines create the factory image without the same historical frame.

How to evaluate each game before buying

  1. Set the non-negotiables. Write down the smallest and largest player count you need, the maximum session length and whether official solo support is required.
  2. Name your preferred mechanism. Pick a shared network for Brass: Birmingham, a spatial layout for Factory Funner, auctions and conversions for Furnace, or refinery logistics for Pipeline.
  3. Decide how much interaction your group enjoys. Shared infrastructure creates indirect competition, simultaneous selection creates opportunistic blocking, and auctions create direct price pressure.
  4. Estimate teaching tolerance. A group willing to learn through several sessions can absorb Brass: Birmingham. A group seeking a complete game in one evening should start with Factory Funner or Furnace.
  5. Check the current edition details. Player counts and times in this guide come from 2026 product pages or listings. Confirm the box or publisher page for the edition and language available in your region.
  6. Plan table space. Factory Funner needs room for individual layouts and physical pipe connections. Brass: Birmingham needs space for a shared board, cards and player components. Furnace needs a clear auction area and room for each player’s company engine.

What to expect in your first session

Brass: Birmingham

Teach the purpose of the network before explaining every edge case. New players need to understand how industries, resources and connections affect one another. Encourage them to observe which resources are available, where other players are building and when a sale or connection will matter. The first session should be treated as a systems lesson; competitive optimization comes later.

Players who dislike indirect benefits may find the shared network frustrating. Your construction can create opportunities for opponents, and an apparently efficient route may be valuable to someone else. That interdependence is the point, but it is also the main reason the game feels heavier than the alternatives.

Factory Funner

Explain that a legal connection is not automatically a good connection. During each of the eight rounds, players should ask where a pipe will enter, where it will leave and what space remains for future machines. Simultaneous selection means that hesitation can cost a preferred tile, so players need a quick way to identify acceptable alternatives.

The game is ideal for groups that enjoy discussing shapes, routes and bottlenecks. It is less suitable for anyone who wants factory progress to feel like a broad economic story rather than a constrained engineering puzzle.

Furnace

Teach the auction first, then show how a winning company changes the player’s conversion options. Bids use discs valued 1–4, so players must balance the desire to secure a company against the opportunity cost of spending a high-value disc. Once companies are acquired, explain how extracted resources can be processed through combinations to build a more productive engine.

The main first-game mistake is evaluating a company in isolation. Its worth depends on the chain it enables and the resources it can use, not just the printed effect considered alone.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying by theme alone. A box showing machines does not tell you whether the game is a network, puzzle or auction. Read the central mechanism before deciding.
  • Underestimating Brass: Birmingham’s teach. Its 60–120-minute specification does not include the time needed to explain a complex economic system. Schedule a dedicated learning session.
  • Choosing Factory Funner for a market simulation. Its profitability comes from making a workable layout, not from manipulating a broad commodity market.
  • Choosing Furnace when nobody enjoys auctions. Bidding is not a side activity; it determines which companies enter each engine and at what opportunity cost.
  • Ignoring player-count limits. Brass: Birmingham and Furnace are cited for 2–4 players, while Factory Funner is cited for 1–6. Do not assume an unofficial variant will preserve the intended balance.
  • Confusing short with simple. Factory Funner and Furnace finish sooner, but both can present dense decisions. Shorter play reduces commitment, not necessarily cognitive load.
  • Overlooking future options. In Factory Funner, leave room for later connections. In Furnace, preserve bidding flexibility and look for chains. In Brass: Birmingham, watch how the shared network changes before committing resources.
  • Assuming every edition is identical. Product pages and listings can change by region or edition. Verify the current component list, language, player count and time before purchasing.

Final decision framework

If your priority is… Choose… Why
A deep industrial economy and shared infrastructure Brass: Birmingham Its canals, rails, industries, resources and market decisions create the broadest economic system.
A literal factory layout with pipes and machines Factory Funner Physical fit, routing and preserving future connections are the core puzzle.
Auctions and compact engine building Furnace Common-row company cards, 1–4 bidding discs and resource conversions drive every round.
Solo or six-player flexibility Factory Funner It is the only cited option with official support for one to six players.
Refinery logistics and oil-market timing Pipeline The published rules reference focuses on refinery networks, experts and buying and selling refined oil.
The clearest Industrial Revolution setting Brass: Birmingham Its West Midlands setting spans 1770–1870 and includes historically themed industries.

For most groups asking for the “best factory-building board game,” start with Brass: Birmingham if you can support a 60–120-minute, 2–4-player economic game. Pick Factory Funner instead when the defining pleasure is arranging a working plant, fitting six players or playing solo. Pick Furnace when your group wants the factory theme delivered through auctions and conversion chains in 30–60 minutes. Choose Pipeline only when refinery logistics and oil markets are the specific experience you want.
