Choose a display case by measuring the assembled LEGO model—not its box—and matching those measurements to the case’s usable interior. Add clearance for wings, weapons, wall sections, minifigures and any other parts that extend beyond the main body. Then verify access, dust and UV claims, shelf capacity, and the route through your home before ordering.
Why “large LEGO set” is not a case size
There is no universal case dimension for a large LEGO model. The completed build, its display pose and the furniture around it determine the required enclosure. A box label such as “large” says nothing reliable about the interior length, depth or height you need.

iTechGuides Team states it plainly in its October 7, 2026 guide: “Large LEGO set” is not a standard case size. The same set can need different cases when it is displayed flat, rotated, mounted against a wall or posed with moving elements extended.
Start with the finished model in the orientation you actually intend to display. Do not measure only the central building or the largest solid block. Include antennae, capes, blades, webs, aircraft, wall sections, open doors, raised figures and any temporary stand or support.

Measure the model in its final display pose
Record the three governing dimensions
Use a rigid ruler or tape measure and record the maximum overall length, depth and height. Measure from the furthest protruding point in each direction, not from the edge of the baseplate. If a part can move, measure the position in which it will remain behind the case.
- Length: the greatest left-to-right span, including side walls, vehicles, wings or other extensions.
- Depth: the greatest front-to-back projection, including a figure leaning forward or a rear structure set behind the main build.
- Height: the highest point from the surface supporting the model to the topmost element, including a minifigure, mast or flying attachment.
Write the measurements in one unit. Converting everything to millimetres makes comparison with many acrylic-case listings easier. Photographing the model beside the tape can also help you identify which part created each maximum when you compare cases later.
Measure the support, not just the bricks
If the set sits on a baseplate, diorama, riser, turntable or custom platform, include that support in the footprint. A case that fits the bricks but not the platform is not a fit. Likewise, check whether the case’s base has an internal lip that reduces usable floor area.

Note whether the model must be lifted vertically into the enclosure or can slide in through a removable front or top. A tall tower may fit the stated height but still be impossible to lower through a narrow opening without removing sections.
Add clearance before comparing cases
Use internal, usable dimensions
Case listings often show both outer and inner dimensions. Compare your model only with the clear space inside the assembled case. Brickfact’s guidance is to take LEGO’s stated model dimensions, add a few centimetres, and compare that result with the case’s inner dimensions. Treat the stated 60 × 30 × 20 cm internal space for a large 1:8 Technic model as a paper example, not a tested universal recommendation.
For each axis, calculate:
Required interior dimension = measured model dimension + clearance for protrusions, handling and installation.
There is no single clearance number that works for every Marvel build. A compact, rigid model may need less spare room than one with fragile weapons or figures suspended in front of a wall. The important point is to add space deliberately rather than treating the case’s nominal dimension as the model’s maximum.

Allow for the parts that make Marvel displays difficult
Marvel sets commonly combine a large architectural body with action elements: flying minifigures, web lines, capes, vehicles and wall-mounted details. Those parts can occupy air above or in front of the main structure. Measure them at their furthest reach and leave enough room to place the model without brushing them against the acrylic.
Premiumtoystore’s case made for LEGO Marvel 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum illustrates this issue. Its listed usable interior is approximately 390 mm long × 320 mm wide × 360 mm high, with room intended for wall elements and flying minifigures. Those dimensions describe that specific case and display concept; they are not a safe size for every large Marvel set.
Use a case-comparison worksheet
Before opening a product page, create one line for the model and one for each candidate case. Record the following values without mixing internal and external measurements.

| External footprint and total load | Confirms that the shelf or cabinet can safely hold it. |
If a listing omits one of these values, mark it “not stated” and ask the seller before paying. Do not infer internal space from an attractive product photograph or from the outside dimensions.
Understand case materials and construction
Acrylic thickness and clarity
Clear acrylic is popular because it is light and transparent, but thickness still matters for panel rigidity and how the case handles during assembly. The 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum XL case specification lists 3 mm clear acrylic. That is a vendor-stated specification for that product, not a minimum thickness for every display case.
Ask whether the listed thickness applies to every panel or only selected pieces. Also check whether the base is acrylic, wood, coated board or another material. A transparent top does not tell you how securely the model is supported underneath.
Flat-packed cases and fasteners
The cited 76218 case is delivered flat-packed and assembled with ten screws. Flat packing can reduce shipping volume, but it means you must have a clean assembly area and enough time to protect panels while joining them. Count the supplied fasteners, identify which panel is the front, and avoid overtightening transparent sheets.

For any screw-together design, check whether the fasteners are accessible after the case is placed on its shelf. If the enclosure must be disassembled to remove the model, that is a different ownership experience from a lift-off or hinged cover.

A removable or openable cover is valuable when you need to dust the model, reconnect a loose element, change the pose or take the set out. A fully glued or permanently closed box may look clean but can turn a minor adjustment into a complete enclosure move.
Compare front-opening, lift-off and panel-by-panel designs. Confirm that the opening is at least as large as the model’s insertion route, not merely that the assembled interior is large enough. Pay attention to handles, hinges and corner posts that reduce the clear opening.
Decide between a custom-fit and a generic case

For a named set such as 76218, search using the complete phrase “acrylic display case for LEGO 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum” and then verify the dimensions against your own completed build. A set-specific label is not a substitute for measuring: alternate poses, lighting, wall elements and custom bases can change the required envelope.
Check dust and UV wording carefully
Dust protection is not automatically an airtight seal
LEGO describes its official Play and Display Case as keeping models free from dust and damage. That wording describes the product’s intended protection; it does not establish that every seam is airtight. Acrylic transparency by itself proves neither a dust seal nor a controlled internal environment.
Look for an explicit description of how panels meet, whether seals or gaskets are used, and which openings remain around the base or fasteners. A case that reduces open exposure can still require periodic cleaning.
UV claims must be documented
The specialist 76218 case vendor claims protection from dust, handling and UV. Treat that as a vendor statement unless the listing supplies a measured transmission rating, filter specification or other documentation. “Clear acrylic” is a material description, not evidence of UV blocking.

Place any case away from direct sunlight regardless of the marketing language. If color preservation is important, request the exact UV performance information for the panel material and confirm whether it applies to all sides.
Verify the shelf, room and delivery route
Calculate the supported load
Your furniture must carry the combined weight of the model, base, case and any display platform. Obtain the case and set weights when available; if a listing does not state them, do not assume a thin shelf is adequate. Include the weight of a door, riser or rotating stand that will remain on the furniture.

A case can fit its footprint while concentrating weight beyond a shelf support or close to an unsupported edge.
Measure the complete route
Measure the shelf depth and width, ceiling clearance, doorways, stair turns and elevator opening before ordering. Compare those dimensions with the case’s outer dimensions and its shipping carton, not merely its internal capacity. A large flat-packed enclosure may enter a room easily but become difficult to rotate after assembly.
- Leave enough vertical clearance to lift a removable cover without striking the ceiling or the shelf above.
- Check the rear gap for cables if the display includes lighting or a powered turntable.
- Keep doors, drawers and nearby decorations from contacting the acrylic when opened.
- Plan a stable, level assembly surface that is larger than the biggest panel.
Step-by-step selection process
- Finish and pose the model. Attach every wall element, figure, vehicle and movable part that will remain in the display.
- Measure the maximum envelope. Record the furthest length, depth and height, including the support or base.
- Mark fragile and movable projections. Note which elements need extra handling room or could be damaged by a panel.
- Add a deliberate clearance allowance. Increase each measured axis by the space needed for installation, air around protrusions and safe adjustment.
- Collect internal case dimensions. Reject listings that provide only outer dimensions unless the seller supplies the usable interior.
- Check the opening path. Confirm that the model and its base can pass through the front, top or removable cover without disassembly.
- Compare construction. Record acrylic thickness, base material, fasteners, panel stability and whether the case is flat-packed.
- Read protection claims literally. Separate stated dust reduction, UV claims and handling protection; do not convert “clear” into “UV-blocking” or “airtight.”
- Validate the room. Measure the shelf, load capacity, doorways and vertical clearance using the case’s outer and shipping dimensions.
- Keep the worksheet with your order. Save the specification page and your measurements so you can check the delivered panels before assembly.
Worked example: LEGO Marvel 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum
For this set, begin with the assembled Sanctum in its intended pose, including any wall-mounted details and flying minifigures. Measure the complete display rather than assuming the building alone represents the required space.
The set-specific XL case cited for 76218 lists approximate internal dimensions of 390 × 320 × 360 mm. Compare your required interior dimensions with those three values in the same order: length, width or depth, and height. If your model or base exceeds any value—or leaves no usable clearance around a projection—the case is not a safe fit even if the product title names the set.
The same listing specifies 3 mm clear acrylic, flat-packed delivery and assembly with ten screws. Use those facts to plan handling and assembly, then verify the current seller listing because stock, configuration and specifications can change. The case’s stated purpose of accommodating wall elements and flying minifigures makes it a relevant reference for action-oriented Marvel displays, not proof that every accessory configuration will fit.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying from the box dimensions
Packaging includes empty space and does not describe the final pose. Measure the completed model and its support instead.
Comparing outer dimensions with the model
Walls, corner posts and bases consume space. Require usable internal length, depth and height before deciding.
Ignoring a single protruding part
One wing, spear, web strand or cape can determine the maximum dimension. Measure the furthest point in all three axes.

A case that touches a fragile element during installation can cause damage even when the final pose technically fits. Add room for your hands and for safe adjustment.
Leaving access out of the comparison
An enclosure that cannot be opened conveniently makes dusting, repairs and removal harder. Treat the opening size and mechanism as core specifications.
Taking protection language too broadly
Dust reduction, UV protection and airtightness are separate properties. Attribute each claim to the manufacturer or vendor and look for supporting specifications.
Forgetting furniture and delivery constraints
Measure the complete route and calculate the combined load. A physically fitting case can still be unsafe or impossible to place.

Which case is the right choice?
Choose the case that has a documented usable interior larger than your measured model envelope, an opening that permits safe installation, construction suited to your handling needs, and a footprint and load compatible with your furniture. For a fixed, named Marvel display, a custom-fit enclosure can provide a cleaner presentation and more predictable fit. For a changing collection, a generic case can justify its extra empty space by accommodating future poses and sets.
Do not order on the words “large,” “XL,” “Marvel” or “display case” alone. The reliable decision comes from your measurements, the case’s internal specification, and the practical checks that protect the model after it reaches your home.
