For Ethereum swaps, the safest default is a route that keeps your transaction out of the public mempool. Flashbots Protect and MEV Blocker provide private-RPC paths; Uniswap Wallet enables swap protection through Flashbots Protect; and UniswapX uses intent-based execution in which fillers compete to execute your signed request. None of these options guarantees that every form of maximal extractable value (MEV) disappears. Your result still depends on chain coverage, wallet support, liquidity, slippage, route quality, and whether the transaction can be included without reverting.
This guide explains how MEV attacks work, compares the available protection models, and gives a practical selection and setup process.

What MEV protection actually protects
MEV is value extracted by reordering, inserting, or censoring transactions before they are finalized in a block. The most familiar example is a sandwich attack. An attacker sees your pending swap, buys the same asset before it, lets your trade push the price upward, and then sells after it. Your slippage tolerance determines how much worse the attacker can make your execution while still allowing the trade to complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe attack is possible because a normal transaction is broadcast to a public mempool. Searchers, builders, and validators can observe the transaction, calculate a profitable ordering, and compete to place transactions around it. A private mempool changes the visibility step: your transaction is sent to a restricted relay or virtual mempool instead of being advertised to everyone.

Other defenses reduce the amount an attacker can gain rather than hiding the transaction. Tight slippage limits the allowed price movement. A limit order specifies a minimum acceptable price. Deep-liquidity pools reduce the price impact of your own trade, leaving less room for a profitable sandwich. Intent-based systems replace a direct on-chain swap transaction with a signed request that competing fillers execute according to the stated conditions.
Protection is therefore a set of controls, not a single guarantee. A private route can reduce public-mempool frontrunning, but it does not make a bad token contract safe, remove smart-contract risk, or ensure the best price on every route. A swap can also fail because liquidity, gas conditions, or the requested price is unavailable.
Protection models at a glance
| Approach | How the order is submitted | Documented protection or value return | Documented coverage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flashbots Protect | Private RPC and private mempool | Frontrunning protection, possible MEV and gas refunds, configurable privacy and speed; transactions are included only when they do not revert | Ethereum mainnet and Sepolia endpoints are listed in the quick-start material | Requires a compatible wallet or RPC configuration; private routing may alter speed or inclusion behavior |
| MEV Blocker | Wallet submits to a virtual mempool through one of five selectable endpoints | Protection against frontrunning and sandwiching, an order-flow auction, and possible backrun rebates | Ethereum | Endpoint choice and route availability can affect latency and execution; no universal protection claim is made |
| Uniswap Wallet swap protection | Protected swaps are sent to a private transaction pool through Flashbots Protect | Swap protection is automatically enabled for Ethereum transactions | Ethereum transactions in the wallet feature | Protection scope is tied to the wallet feature and supported network, not every DeFi transaction |
| UniswapX | Intent-based execution with competing fillers rather than a direct swap submission | Competition can seek better execution than a single direct route; exact protection and rebate behavior depends on the order and filler | Not stated in the cited documentation | Fill availability, token support, and settlement conditions must be checked for each order |
| Public-mempool swap with careful settings | Direct broadcast visible to the public mempool | Tight slippage, limit orders, and deep liquidity reduce potential loss but do not hide the transaction | Depends on the chain, wallet, and decentralized exchange | Still exposed to mempool observation and reordering |
Flashbots Protect: private routing with revert filtering
Flashbots Protect routes a transaction through a private mempool. Its documented benefits include protection from frontrunning, possible MEV and gas refunds, and controls for privacy and speed. The most important execution rule is explicit: “Transactions are only included in the block if they do not revert.” That behavior prevents an unsuccessful transaction from being included through the Protect path, although it does not turn every transaction into a guaranteed fill.

- You use an Ethereum wallet that supports a custom RPC and want private submission without changing the application you trade on.
- You are sending a transaction with meaningful slippage exposure and prefer privacy over the broadest possible broadcast.
- You want a documented possibility of MEV or gas refunds and are willing to accept that refunds are not guaranteed for every transaction.
How to add the Protect RPC
- Confirm that the wallet is on Ethereum mainnet or Sepolia, the networks listed in the Protect quick-start material.
- Open the wallet’s network or connection settings and choose the option for adding a custom RPC. Wallet labels differ, but the fields normally include a network name, RPC endpoint, chain identifier, currency symbol, and block-explorer URL.
- Copy the current Protect endpoint and network values from the Flashbots Protect quick-start documentation rather than relying on an old address saved elsewhere. The endpoint is not interchangeable between networks.
- Save the network, switch to it, and check that the wallet displays the expected chain before signing a transaction.
- Send a small test transaction first. Confirm that it reaches the intended recipient and that the wallet reports normal confirmation before using the route for a large swap.
A private RPC is a submission path, not a new wallet. Token approvals, smart-contract permissions, and the decentralized exchange you use still matter. Check the transaction destination and calldata in the wallet before signing.
MEV Blocker: private endpoints, auctions, and rebates
MEV Blocker provides RPC endpoints designed to protect user transactions from MEV attacks such as frontrunning and sandwiching. Wallets submit transactions to its virtual mempool. The documentation describes five selectable endpoints, an order-flow auction, backrun rebates, permissionless integration, and free use for users and integrators. Its documented chain support is Ethereum.

What the auction changes
Instead of allowing any observer to trade against your pending order, the service can auction the right to backrun eligible flow. A successful backrun may generate a rebate for the user. The presence of an auction does not mean every swap produces a payment: rebates depend on whether a profitable backrun exists and on the transaction and endpoint being used.
Choosing among endpoints
The five endpoints are an operational choice rather than five different chains. Compare them using current documentation and your wallet’s connection screen. Look for differences in speed, reliability, privacy settings, and the way rebates are reported. If one endpoint is slow or fails to deliver a transaction, switch to another supported endpoint and retest with a small amount. Do not assume that an endpoint available today will remain available or behave identically under different network conditions.
When it is a good fit
- You want a private-RPC alternative to Flashbots Protect on Ethereum.
- You value a documented backrun-rebate mechanism and are comfortable selecting among multiple endpoints.
- You are integrating a wallet or application and need a permissionless path rather than a feature tied to one wallet vendor.
Uniswap Wallet and UniswapX use different protection models
Uniswap Wallet swap protection
Uniswap Support states that swap protection in Uniswap Wallet uses Flashbots Protect. Protected swaps are sent to a private transaction pool, and swap protection is automatically enabled for Ethereum transactions. That makes the wallet feature convenient: you do not have to manually replace the wallet’s Ethereum RPC just to obtain the documented protection path.
The scope matters. Automatic protection described for Ethereum transactions does not establish equivalent behavior on every other network or for every transaction type in the wallet. Before signing, verify the selected network and the wallet’s displayed protection status. A wallet-level feature also does not protect a transaction that you submit through a different wallet, browser extension, or direct RPC connection.
UniswapX intent-based swaps
UniswapX uses intent-based execution. You sign the conditions of the trade, and fillers compete to execute the intent instead of your wallet broadcasting one conventional swap transaction to the public mempool. This execution model can improve competition for price and reduce the need for you to choose a single pool manually.

Intent execution introduces different checks. Confirm the token, amount, minimum output, deadline, and any permitted fees in the signing request. A filler must still find a viable route and settle the trade. If there is no acceptable fill, the intent may remain unfilled or expire rather than execute at an unacceptable price. The cited material does not establish a universal chain list or a single protection guarantee for every UniswapX order, so verify support in the interface for the specific network and token pair.
Eight criteria for comparing a DeFi platform
1. Privacy path
Identify where the transaction is visible. A public mempool exposes the pending transaction to searchers. A private RPC sends it to a restricted relay or virtual mempool. An intent network shares signed trade conditions with fillers under its own execution process. The privacy path is the first question because it determines whether a conventional sandwich observer can see the order before inclusion.
2. Execution model
Direct submission gives you control over the exact transaction and gas settings, but you bear the consequences of public visibility unless a private RPC is used. Solver or filler competition can seek a better route, but you must understand the signed permissions, expiry, and settlement rules.
3. Protection scope
Read the provider’s wording carefully. Frontrunning, sandwiching, failed-transaction filtering, and refund programs are separate claims. Flashbots Protect documents private routing, possible refunds, and inclusion only for transactions that do not revert. MEV Blocker documents private endpoints, sandwich and frontrunning protection, auctions, and rebates. Neither description promises to eliminate every form of MEV.
4. Value returned
Separate a better execution price from a cash-like refund. Flashbots Protect documents possible MEV and gas refunds. MEV Blocker describes backrun rebates. An intent-based route may improve the quoted price through filler competition. Ask whether the value is guaranteed, conditional, paid in a particular token, or simply reflected in the quote.

5. Failure behavior
Find out what happens when the transaction cannot meet your conditions. Flashbots Protect’s documented rule excludes reverting transactions from inclusion. Other routes may return an error, leave an intent unfilled, or submit a transaction that consumes gas before reverting. Check the wallet’s simulation and the provider’s failure policy before increasing the order size.
6. Coverage
Confirm the chain, wallet, token, route, and endpoint. A protection service documented for Ethereum cannot be assumed to protect a transaction on another network. Also check whether the decentralized exchange or aggregator supports the private route; changing the wallet’s RPC does not automatically change an application’s own submission system.
7. User controls
Review slippage, limit-order conditions, privacy and speed settings, transaction deadlines, and gas preferences. A service that hides your order but forces a very wide slippage limit can still expose you to poor execution. A very tight limit can protect price but lower the chance of a fill.
8. Liquidity and execution quality
Compare expected price impact, confirmation latency, route reliability, and fill probability. Deep-liquidity pools generally leave less price impact for a given trade size. Privacy is valuable only if the resulting transaction can still execute at an acceptable price and within your deadline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step-by-step: choose and configure a protected swap
- Identify the network. Write down the exact chain shown in your wallet. If it is not Ethereum, do not assume that Flashbots Protect or MEV Blocker coverage applies.
- Classify the transaction. Decide whether you are making a direct swap, submitting a limit order, or signing an intent. The protection and failure behavior differ between these models.
- Pick the privacy path. For an Ethereum direct transaction, compare Flashbots Protect with MEV Blocker. If you use Uniswap Wallet, check that its Ethereum swap-protection feature is active. If the interface offers UniswapX, inspect the intent terms before choosing it.
- Verify the route and liquidity. Review the quoted output, price impact, pool depth indicators, and token path. Reject a route that requires unusually high price impact even if it uses a private submission path.
- Set slippage deliberately. Start with the narrowest tolerance that can realistically fill under current volatility. Increase it only when you understand the additional loss you are permitting; never use a wide default simply to avoid an error.
- Use a limit condition when timing allows. A limit order or intent with a minimum output can wait for the market instead of authorizing any price inside a broad slippage band.
- Check the signing request. Confirm the spender, token amount, recipient or settlement contract, minimum output, deadline, and network. Reject approvals or calldata that do not match the swap you intended.
- Test with a small amount. Submit a low-value transaction through the selected endpoint or wallet feature. Record the submission time, confirmation time, and final output so you can detect endpoint or route problems before a larger trade.
- Monitor inclusion and finality. A private submission can remain pending if builders do not include it or if your conditions cannot be met. Do not resubmit repeatedly without checking whether the first transaction is already pending; duplicate submissions can create unintended trades or nonce conflicts.
- Review the result. Compare the final amount with the quoted minimum, inspect the transaction status, and check any documented refund or rebate record. Treat an unconfirmed or expired request as a failure to investigate, not as permission to widen slippage automatically.
Slippage, liquidity, and speed: the controls you still need
Slippage tolerance
Slippage is the maximum price movement your transaction accepts between signing and execution. A tighter setting reduces the amount a sandwich can extract, but it also increases the chance that normal market movement causes the transaction to fail. Set the tolerance from the pair’s volatility and liquidity, not from a universal percentage copied from another trade.
Best Value
Limit orders and minimum-output checks
A limit order expresses a price condition directly. For a market-style swap, the minimum-output field serves a similar purpose: the transaction should not settle below that amount. Read the exact unit and token direction. A minimum output protects price only when the contract enforces it and the transaction is not replaced with a different approval or route.
Deep-liquidity pools
Large pools generally absorb trades with less price impact than shallow pools. Compare the route’s estimated impact and fees, not just the headline exchange rate. Splitting a trade across routes can lower impact, but it can also add complexity, gas cost, and more contracts to trust.
Confirmation speed
Faster inclusion can reduce the time during which market conditions change, yet a rushed transaction with a high slippage limit can be worse than a slower, well-bounded order. Flashbots Protect exposes privacy and speed choices; use the fastest setting only when the deadline and market risk justify it.
Failure modes and recovery
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The transaction is not visible on a public block explorer | It is still in a private relay or virtual mempool | Check the wallet’s pending-transaction view and the provider status. Do not submit a duplicate until you know whether the original has expired or been dropped. |
| A Flashbots Protect transaction does not appear in a block | The transaction would revert, missed the inclusion window, or was not selected | Review the quoted output, deadline, gas settings, and contract state. Resubmit only after the first transaction is confirmed as dropped or expired. |
| The swap fails with a slippage error | Price moved beyond your limit or liquidity changed | Recheck the route and pool depth. If you increase slippage, calculate the maximum loss that the new setting permits. |
| MEV Blocker is slow or unavailable | An endpoint may be congested or temporarily unsuitable | Try another documented endpoint, run a small test, and compare confirmation behavior before using the route for a large trade. |
| An intent remains unfilled | No filler can meet the token, price, deadline, or settlement conditions | Allow it to expire or cancel it using the interface’s supported method. Requote with conditions you understand rather than signing a broad approval. |
| The quoted price looks good but the final output is poor | High price impact, a wide slippage limit, fees, or a changed route | Inspect the route details and minimum-output value. Prefer deeper liquidity and narrower conditions; privacy does not compensate for poor market execution. |
Security and privacy checks
- Verify the network before signing. Ethereum mainnet and Sepolia are different environments; an endpoint value for one is not a substitute for the other.
- Use current endpoint information. RPC addresses and supported features can change. Copy them from the provider’s current setup material and remove obsolete custom networks from the wallet.
- Separate approvals from swaps. A private transaction path does not limit an unlimited token approval. Approve only the amount and spender required, when the wallet gives you that choice.
- Inspect contracts and recipients. Confirm that the transaction targets the intended decentralized-exchange or settlement contract. MEV protection does not detect malicious tokens, phishing pages, or compromised interfaces.
- Protect your signing device. A private RPC cannot prevent malware from changing the destination or amount before you approve the transaction.
- Keep a record of conditions. Save the minimum output, deadline, endpoint, and quote for high-value trades. This makes it easier to diagnose a failed or unexpectedly filled order.
Which option fits which situation?
| Your situation | Practical starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You use an Ethereum wallet with custom-RPC support and want direct control | Flashbots Protect | It supplies a private mempool path with documented refund possibilities and no-revert inclusion behavior. |
| You want an Ethereum private-RPC alternative with endpoint choice | MEV Blocker | It offers five documented endpoints, an order-flow auction, and possible backrun rebates. |
| You already trade in Uniswap Wallet on Ethereum | Wallet swap protection | Protection is automatically enabled for Ethereum swaps and uses Flashbots Protect. |
| You prefer a quote assembled by competing executors | UniswapX, when the interface supports your pair and network | Intent-based execution can let fillers compete, but you must inspect the signed conditions and fill behavior. |
| You cannot use a private route | Public submission with narrow slippage, a limit condition, and deep liquidity | These controls reduce potential loss but do not hide the pending transaction from the mempool. |
Questions to answer before approving
- Which chain is selected, and is the chosen protection service documented for it?
- Does the transaction use a public mempool, a private RPC, or an intent and filler network?
- What is the exact minimum output, deadline, and permitted slippage?
- Which contract receives the approval and swap call?
- What happens if the transaction reverts, expires, or cannot be filled?
- Are any refunds or rebates conditional, and where will they appear?
- Have you tested the endpoint or wallet feature with a small transaction?
The most defensible choice is the one whose privacy path, failure behavior, and price limits you can verify before signing. For Ethereum direct swaps, start with a documented private route such as Flashbots Protect or MEV Blocker; use Uniswap Wallet’s automatic protection when that is your wallet; and consider UniswapX when its intent terms and filler availability suit the trade. Keep slippage tight, prefer deep liquidity, and treat every protection claim as limited to the exact chain and transaction type it documents.
