For long-term NEAR holdings or a large balance, choose a self-custody wallet that can sign with a Ledger hardware wallet. For everyday transactions, compare the current mobile, browser, desktop and web choices in NEAR’s official wallet directory. If you use chain-abstraction or multichain applications, confirm that the app accepts an Ethereum wallet such as MetaMask through its wallet selector before creating an account.
There is no single “official NEAR wallet” anymore
NEAR has moved from presenting one web wallet to presenting an ecosystem of wallets. The current gateway at wallet.near.org lists several products, with different platforms and functions. That means the right choice depends on four questions: who controls the recovery credentials, where you want to use the wallet, whether you need hardware signing, and which applications or features you need.

NEAR’s onboarding material separates wallets into two broad groups. NEAR-native options include MyNearWallet, HERE and Meteor. Ethereum-wallet options include MetaMask, Brave Wallet, Aurora Pass, Rabby Wallet and Zerion. An Ethereum wallet is not automatically compatible with every NEAR application; compatibility depends on the application’s wallet-selector integration.

Self-custody
With self-custody, you control the keys or recovery credentials that authorize transactions. You are also responsible for backing them up, keeping them private and resisting phishing. Losing the recovery material can mean losing access permanently; exposing it can let someone else move the funds.

NEAR Mobile is described as self-custodial. MyNearWallet describes itself as non-custodial and says funds are stored on the user’s device. Those descriptions tell you the provider does not hold a conventional account password that can simply be reset for you. Read each wallet’s current recovery instructions before depositing meaningful value, because terminology and recovery flows can change.
Custody questions to ask before funding
- Does the wallet show you a seed phrase, a hardware key, or another recovery method that you control?
- Can the provider restore access, or is recovery entirely your responsibility?
- Can you export or back up the credentials without placing them online?
- What happens if you lose the phone, browser profile or computer where the wallet is installed?
A wallet that is convenient for a small spending balance may be a poor place for savings. Separate day-to-day funds from long-term holdings instead of asking one wallet to serve incompatible risk levels.
Why hardware signing matters for larger NEAR balances
NEAR’s wallet guide recommends Ledger for stronger security because the private keys remain on the Ledger device. The guide states: “This ensures your private keys never leave your Ledger, which provides the highest level of security when using the NEAR Wallet.” A hardware wallet does not make every transaction safe, but it creates a protected signing boundary: a website or browser extension should not be able to copy the private key.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a Ledger hardware wallet when the amount at risk justifies an extra device and a more deliberate signing process. You still need to verify the destination, amount and network details on the device’s screen. Hardware signing cannot stop you from approving a fraudulent transaction that you deliberately confirm.
Hardware-wallet setup path
- Obtain the hardware device from an authentic source and initialize it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Install Ledger Live from the manufacturer’s current download channel, then update the device and install the NEAR application when offered.
- Create or access a NEAR account through the supported NEAR workflow while the device is connected. Record the recovery phrase offline; never type it into a website, chat, form or computer.
- Send a small test amount of NEAR to the account. Confirm the address on the hardware device before approving the transfer.
- After the test succeeds, move the remainder in separate transfers if your risk tolerance favors staged verification.
A hardware wallet protects keys, not your exchange account, email account or recovery phrase. Use a unique password, strong device security and an offline backup stored where fire, theft and unauthorized access are considered.

Compare the current NEAR wallet landscape
The directory changes as products add chains, platforms and features. The following snapshot reflects the platforms and functions identified in NEAR’s current gateway and onboarding pages; “not stated” means those pages do not establish a custody or feature claim.
| Wallet or group | Platforms listed | Functions or positioning identified | Custody information established |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEAR Mobile | iOS and Android | Self-custody, staking, and gasless cross-chain swaps powered by NEAR Intents | Self-custodial |
| Meteor | Web, browser extension and mobile | Zero-fee swaps and cross-chain bridging | Not stated in the directory snapshot |
| HOT | Mobile and browser extension | Listed as a NEAR ecosystem wallet; confirm current functions in its documentation | Not stated |
| Intear | Web, mobile and desktop | Listed as a NEAR ecosystem wallet; confirm current functions in its documentation | Not stated |
| Nightly | Mobile and browser extension | Listed in the NEAR wallet gateway; confirm supported networks and features before use | Not stated |
| Sweat Wallet | Listed in the gateway | Confirm platform and NEAR-account functions in the current product documentation | Not stated |
| MyNearWallet | NEAR-native option | NEAR account access and self-custody | Describes itself as non-custodial; funds are stored on the user’s device |
| HERE | NEAR-native option | Confirm current platform, staking and application support before funding | Not stated |
| Ethereum wallets | MetaMask, Brave Wallet, Aurora Pass, Rabby Wallet and Zerion | Can be used where a NEAR application’s selector integration accepts an Ethereum wallet | Varies by provider; not established uniformly here |
“Zero-fee” or “gasless” describes a stated wallet or transaction feature, not a guarantee that every route, bridge, network or third-party service will always cost nothing. Check the final quote and transaction details before signing.

Choose by device and daily workflow
Mobile-first use
Choose a mobile wallet when you make payments, approve applications or monitor staking primarily from a phone. NEAR Mobile supports iOS and Android and adds staking and gasless cross-chain swaps. Meteor and Nightly also have mobile offerings. Install only from the provider’s verified store listing and check the publisher name carefully; a fake app can request the same permissions as a real one.
Browser applications and extensions
An extension is useful when a decentralized application expects a browser wallet connection. Meteor, HOT and Nightly are listed with extension support. Keep a separate browser profile for wallet activity, remove extensions you no longer use, and review every connection request. A connected site may be able to request signatures even though it cannot see a properly protected private key.
Web and desktop access
Web access is convenient on a computer you control, while a desktop application can provide a more isolated workflow. Meteor is listed for web, extension and mobile; Intear is listed for web, mobile and desktop. “Web wallet” does not mean custodial by itself, so verify where keys are generated and how recovery works before transferring funds.

Staking NEAR: what the wallet must support
Staking delegates NEAR to a validator. Validators run infrastructure that helps secure the network, and validator fees are generally charged against rewards rather than the principal stake. The amount you earn depends on network conditions and the validator’s terms. The older NEAR guide notes that rewards varied with total network stake, so an old figure such as “5% per year or more” should not be treated as a current rate.

Ledger staking workflow
Ledger’s current NEAR staking workflow is:
- Connect and unlock the Ledger device.
- Use Ledger Live and install or open the NEAR application.
- Create or access the NEAR account associated with the device.
- Transfer NEAR to that account, checking the address on the device.
- Choose a validator and review the validator fee, minimums, lockup or unstaking timing and recent operating record shown by the current interface.
- Approve the delegation on the Ledger device and keep enough unstaked NEAR for network fees and other transactions.
Wallet support for staking is not proof that every validator is reliable. Compare validator information in the current staking interface, understand the un staking period before committing funds, and do not select a validator solely because it appears first.
Can MetaMask and other Ethereum wallets work with NEAR?
Sometimes. NEAR’s onboarding page names MetaMask, Brave Wallet, Aurora Pass, Rabby Wallet and Zerion as Ethereum-wallet options. A NEAR announcement says MetaMask, Phantom and other Ethereum wallets can interact with NEAR applications through wallet-selector integration. The practical test is the application’s connection dialog: if the app lists your Ethereum wallet, you can attempt the connection; if it does not, installing the wallet will not make that app compatible.
Check compatibility safely
- Open the application from its verified domain or a trusted official directory entry.
- Use the application’s Connect wallet control and inspect the selector options.
- Select the wallet only if its name and network match what you intended to use.
- Read the requested permissions and every signature message. Reject requests that ask for an unexplained approval or a transfer.
- After connecting, verify the account and network shown inside the application before depositing or swapping.
Compatibility is application-specific. One dApp may support MetaMask while another supports only a NEAR-native account or a different selector adapter.

Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).
- Staking: required if you want to delegate NEAR from the wallet rather than move it to another service.
- Swaps: useful for exchanging assets, but compare the quoted rate, route, slippage and network costs at confirmation.
- Bridges and cross-chain transfers: convenient for moving between networks, yet they add contract, liquidity and destination-network risks.
- NFT support: confirm that the wallet displays the marketplace and token standards you actually use.
- Gasless transactions: can simplify onboarding, but identify who sponsors the fee and which routes qualify.
- Hardware signing: essential if you want the private key to remain on a Ledger device.
Feature lists are wallet-specific and can change. Treat a directory listing as a starting point, then confirm the exact function in the wallet’s current documentation and in the dApp you plan to use.
A practical decision framework
Choose Ledger-backed self-custody when
- Your priority is protecting a long-term or high-value NEAR balance.
- You can store an offline recovery backup and accept an extra signing step.
- You want validator delegation while keeping private keys on a hardware device.
Choose a self-custodial mobile wallet when
- You transact mainly from iOS or Android.
- You need on-phone staking, swaps or cross-chain actions and understand the recovery responsibility.
- You can keep the phone, operating system and wallet app updated and secured.
Choose a browser, web or desktop wallet when
- Your primary activity is connecting to browser-based applications.
- The wallet’s extension or desktop platform is explicitly supported by the dApps you use.
- You can isolate wallet activity from everyday browsing and inspect every signature.
Use an Ethereum wallet when
- The target NEAR application lists that wallet in its selector.
- You already manage several networks in an Ethereum wallet and value that consolidated workflow.
- You understand which account, network and signing method the integration is using.
Security checks before and after your first transfer
- Verify the source. Start from the official NEAR wallet directory or a provider domain you have independently verified. Bookmark the real page instead of following unsolicited links.
- Protect recovery credentials. Keep seed phrases offline. Do not photograph them, store them in cloud notes or paste them into support chats.
- Never enter a hardware recovery phrase into a website. A site claiming to “synchronize” or “validate” a Ledger phrase is a phishing attempt.
- Test with a small amount. Confirm receipt and the correct account before sending the rest.
- Read the device display. Match the address, amount, chain and contract action shown on the signing device, not just the browser window.
- Review approvals. Revoke or disconnect permissions you no longer need using the wallet or application’s current controls.
- Plan recovery. Decide how a trusted person could access instructions after an emergency without placing the phrase where an attacker can find it.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Sending to the wrong network or account
Stop and check the transaction status in the wallet and the relevant explorer. Do not send a second transaction to “fix” an unconfirmed one until you know whether the first succeeded. If an exchange or bridge is involved, contact that service through its verified support channel and provide the transaction hash; a wallet provider usually cannot reverse a completed blockchain transfer.
Approving a suspicious signature
Disconnect the application, stop interacting with the site and review token approvals or permissions from a trusted wallet interface. Move remaining assets to a fresh account if you believe the recovery phrase or private key was exposed. A Ledger device cannot protect funds after you reveal its recovery phrase.
Lost phone or browser profile
Restore only through the wallet’s documented recovery process and your offline credentials. Never accept “recovery help” that asks for the phrase in a chat or form. If you used hardware signing, connect the initialized device rather than importing its recovery phrase into a software wallet.
Staking appears unavailable
Check that you are on the correct network, that the account has enough liquid NEAR for fees, and that the wallet currently supports staking for your account type. Validator interfaces, minimums and un staking rules can change; consult the current wallet and validator documentation before moving funds.
How to keep your choice current
Wallet names, supported chains, fees, staking screens and referral arrangements change. Recheck the official NEAR directory and the wallet provider’s own documentation immediately before a major transfer or a staking decision. A wallet that was ideal for one application last year may not appear in that application’s selector today.
The durable choice is not a brand name. It is a custody model and workflow you can secure: hardware-backed self-custody for significant savings, a well-maintained mobile or browser wallet for the activities it explicitly supports, and an Ethereum wallet only where the application’s integration confirms compatibility.
