A pledge amount is not your final bill unless the campaign explicitly says the relevant shipping and taxes are included. Before paying, make two lists: what the tier guarantees and every optional or uncertain charge that may appear in the campaign or its pledge manager.
What does this pledge tier actually include?
A pledge level is the fixed reward bundle you select first. BackerKit’s Crowdfunding 101 describes it as “A pledge level is a fixed bundle backers pick first. It sets which rewards they get.” The exact mechanics can differ by platform and project, so the campaign page remains the controlling description.

Read the tier card and reward chart as a contract for contents, not as a summary of everything pictured in the campaign. A rulebook shown in a campaign video may be exclusive to a higher level; a digital file may be offered only to backers in a particular region; and a pictured accessory may be an add-on rather than part of the tier.

Make an included-rewards inventory
- Books and physical components: record each title, edition, language, quantity, and whether it is hardcover, softcover, boxed, or another format.
- Digital rewards: note each PDF, virtual-tabletop file, soundtrack, or other download and whether access is permanent or tied to an account.
- Bonuses: list stretch goals, early-backer bonuses, convention items, signed material, maps, cards, miniatures, and tier-exclusive pieces separately.
- Access: check whether the tier includes playtest access, a community role, a pledge-manager credit, or only a future retail product.
- Delivery conditions: capture the stated fulfillment window, shipping regions, and any sentence saying an item ships separately.
Do not count a reward merely because it appears elsewhere on the page. Copy the exact item name and quantity into your own notes, then mark whether the item is included, optional, conditional on a stretch goal, or not stated for your tier.

Are add-ons included in the pledge price?
No. Add-ons are optional purchases on top of the selected pledge. BackerKit defines them as “extra items backers can buy on top of a pledge level while the campaign is live.” Their item prices are separate, and they can also change shipping, tax, VAT, and duty.
Separate the three kinds of cost
- Tier price: the amount attached to the fixed reward bundle.
- Add-on price: the listed amount for each extra item, pack, upgrade, or late-pledge selection.
- Fulfillment cost: shipping and any tax, VAT, duty, or other charge associated with sending both the tier and the extras.
An inexpensive poster, dice set, or miniature can have a disproportionate effect on delivery cost if it needs a tube, a separate parcel, or a different shipping class. Conversely, a digital add-on may increase the order value without adding parcel weight. Never infer the effect from the item price alone.
Check whether an add-on can be bought later
Some campaigns allow add-ons during the campaign only; others list them in a later pledge manager, sometimes alongside late pledges or upgrades. A later option is not guaranteed. Look for the campaign’s stated closing date, survey deadline, inventory limits, and payment rules before deciding to postpone a purchase.

Use this as a planning equation:
pledge tier + desired add-ons + shipping + applicable sales tax or VAT + disclosed import duty or other fulfillment charge = estimated delivered total
This is a checklist, not a universal billing formula. The campaign, platform, destination, and fulfillment arrangement determine which components apply and when they are charged. Label your result an estimate whenever the campaign supplies an estimate rather than a final amount.
Build a charge worksheet before choosing
| Cost or decision | What to record | When it may be charged | Status to assign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pledge tier | Price, currency, included quantities and formats | Usually during the campaign | Charged now, unless the page says otherwise |
| Add-ons | Each item, unit price, quantity and purchase deadline | During the campaign or in a pledge manager | Optional |
| Shipping | Destination, service, estimate, parcel rules and whether add-ons are included | During the campaign or later | Charged now, later, estimate, or unknown |
| Sales tax or VAT | Tax jurisdiction, rate method and whether shipping is taxable | Often at a later pledge-manager checkout | Included, collected later, or unknown |
| Customs duty or import fees | Who pays, which country assesses it and whether the carrier collects it | At import or delivery | Included, recipient responsibility, or unknown |
| Other fulfillment charges | Handling, address-change, split-shipment or replacement fees if disclosed | According to the campaign terms | Disclosed, optional, or unknown |
Do not turn an “unknown” cell into zero. If a material charge is missing, contact the creator through the campaign’s official channel and keep the answer with your pledge records.

Will I pay shipping now or later?
Campaigns use different collection schedules. Shipping may be charged with the initial pledge, estimated and reconciled later, or collected in a pledge manager after the campaign. A creator may also defer shipping until products are ready, when warehouse rates and the final contents are known.
Understand the two common shipping models
Whole-order, weight-based shipping calculates one fee from the combined weight of the tier rewards and add-ons. BackerKit’s guidance presents this approach as suitable when product weights and shipping rates are known. Adding a heavy book, box, or miniature can therefore move the entire order into a higher band.
Stackable shipping applies a base rate to the pledge rewards and adds fees for particular extras. This can suit items with different sizes or shipping classes. BackerKit gives the example of a book that qualifies for media mail while a poster requires a separate tube. Under such a system, an add-on may create a second shipping charge even when its own price is modest.
Questions to answer on the campaign page
- Is a shipping amount already charged, or is the displayed figure only an estimate?
- Does the quoted shipping cover add-ons, or are they charged separately?
- Does a larger, heavier, or differently packaged reward change the service or rate?
- Which countries and territories are covered, and are remote-area surcharges excluded?
- Will items ship together, or can books, posters, and accessories arrive in separate parcels?
- Can the destination be changed before fulfillment, and is an address-change fee disclosed?
Save a screenshot or PDF of the shipping table when you pledge. Rates and policies can change between the campaign and fulfillment, and the original wording helps resolve an ambiguity later.
Are VAT, sales tax, customs, or duty included?
Tax handling is platform- and jurisdiction-dependent. Do not assume that a campaign using one platform follows the tax process of another, or that a tax collected at checkout covers import duty charged by your country.

Kickstarter’s Pledge Manager and basic survey
Kickstarter’s published guidance says its Pledge Manager calculates applicable tax after the campaign from the shipping location and selected reward in supported jurisdictions, then collects and remits that tax there. The same guidance says the basic survey tool can collect addresses and simple information but cannot charge taxes, shipping, or offer add-ons. Kickstarter states: “Because Kickstarter’s Pledge Manager collects and remits sales and value-added tax on Pledge Manager transactions, you can’t charge or include tax in your pledge tiers if you plan to use our Pledge Manager.”

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
That statement applies to the described Kickstarter Pledge Manager setup. A creator using a third-party tool retains control of tax decisions and may retain responsibility for compliance and remittance. The campaign should tell you which checkout system it intends to use.
BackerKit tax settings
BackerKit’s tax documentation says its tool can apply tax to pledge levels, add-ons, and shipping. That describes a platform capability and creator configuration, not personal tax advice. The rate and whether a charge appears depend on your location and the project’s setup.
Import duty is a separate question
A collected VAT or sales-tax amount does not automatically mean customs duty is prepaid. Check whether the campaign promises delivery-duty-paid shipping, says the recipient is responsible, or says nothing. If the wording is silent, treat duty as uncertain and check your country’s import rules before committing to an expensive physical tier.

One Pathfinder Quest campaign FAQ said shipping, VAT, and other applicable fees would be collected through BackerKit after the campaign when the games were ready to ship. Another BackerKit RPG campaign FAQ said shipping would be calculated at shipping time and that duty or VAT was excluded and remained the recipient’s responsibility. These examples show why a platform name alone cannot predict your bill; the project’s own FAQ controls your expectation.
How should I compare two or more tiers?
Compare the rewards you will use, not the apparent size of the bundle. A larger tier can be poor value if it adds duplicates, a format you do not need, or a shipping-heavy item. A smaller tier can be misleadingly cheap if the desired book or exclusive component must later be purchased as an add-on.
| Comparison point | Tier A | Tier B | What to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier price and currency | Enter campaign value | Enter campaign value | What is the extra price for moving up? |
| Included physical rewards | List titles, quantities and formats | List titles, quantities and formats | Which items will you actually use? |
| Included digital rewards | List files or access | List files or access | Are files duplicated or tier-exclusive? |
| Exclusive or limited items | Record conditions | Record conditions | Could the item be unavailable later? |
| Add-on alternative | Record whether desired extras are sold separately | Record whether desired extras are bundled | Is buying the higher tier cheaper after extras? |
| Shipping impact | Class, weight or estimate | Class, weight or estimate | Does the larger bundle change the parcel? |
| Tax and duty disclosure | Included, later or unknown | Included, later or unknown | Which uncertainty can you afford? |
| Upgrade and cancellation deadline | Campaign-specific date | Campaign-specific date | Can you change your mind before fulfillment? |
Calculate the cost per desired item only when the campaign gives enough information to do so. Do not assign a cash value to stretch goals, signed material, or digital bonuses unless you genuinely want them; “more contents” is not automatically “more value.”

Can I add or upgrade rewards in the pledge manager?
A pledge manager may collect reward selections, shipping details, payment information, add-on purchases, and late pledges after the campaign. BackerKit says its manager can support these functions. The existence of the tool does not guarantee that every project will enable every option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDuring the campaign
BackerKit’s FAQ says backers may change or adjust a pledge level and add-ons before a campaign ends. Use the campaign’s own deadline and confirmation screen rather than assuming a change saved automatically. If you have already paid, check whether the platform refunds or merely reallocates the amount.
After the campaign
Post-campaign changes and cancellations are at the creator’s discretion and may depend on the fulfillment stage. Inventory may already be ordered, payment may have been transferred, or shipping labels may be prepared. A planned late pledge, upgrade, or address correction is not assured unless the project states the terms.
Payment and platform fees
BackerKit’s FAQ currently describes a 3.5% transaction fee on funds raised through its Pledge Manager for Kickstarter-launched campaigns, including add-ons, pre-orders, upgrades, shipping, and taxes. It describes a 5% transaction fee for charges made in its manager for campaigns launched on BackerKit. These are creator-side platform pricing terms, not amounts to add to your bill unless the campaign explicitly passes a fee to backers. Verify the current platform terms and the campaign checkout before treating any fee as your responsibility.
How much delivery risk does a crowdfunded RPG carry?
A pledge finances a project that still has to be produced and fulfilled. Kickstarter describes a pledge as a promise tied to creating the project and says purchases become final when the creator is ready to fulfill. BackerKit’s guide says rewards are not guaranteed by the platform and that creators are expected to deliver them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This does not predict whether a particular campaign will succeed or fail. It does mean you should evaluate the creator’s own evidence:
Best Value
- Read recent updates for manufacturing, approvals, shipping, and schedule changes.
- Look for a clear explanation of what is finished, what remains to be produced, and who is fulfilling it.
- Review the creator’s previous fulfillment record, including how delays and address problems were handled.
- Check the stated cancellation, refund, replacement, and upgrade terms before paying.
- Do not pledge money needed for a near-term purchase if the campaign gives no reliable delivery date.
Platform protection is not a substitute for reading the project terms. Keep copies of the reward description, FAQ, shipping policy, and payment confirmation.
A step-by-step method for choosing your tier
- Set your destination first. Select the country or region that will receive the parcel; shipping and tax can depend on it.
- List your must-have rewards. Separate physical books, accessories, digital files, and exclusives so a bundle cannot hide an unwanted duplicate.
- Read the exact tier contents. Mark each item as included, conditional, optional, or not stated.
- Record every desired add-on. Note price, quantity, format, availability window, and whether it can be bought later.
- Identify the checkout system. Determine whether the project plans to use a platform pledge manager, a basic survey, or another tool.
- Locate the shipping rule. Write down the estimate, weight or class method, add-on treatment, regions covered, and payment timing.
- Locate the tax and duty rule. Distinguish collected sales tax or VAT from import duty payable to a carrier or customs authority.
- Calculate a low-and-high estimate. Use the known charge for the low end and add every disclosed or plausible uncertain charge to the high end; label both as estimates.
- Compare tiers on the same basis. Include desired add-ons, shipping effects, tax treatment, exclusives, and deadlines for each tier.
- Confirm before the deadline. If a material cell is unknown, ask the creator and save the answer before pledging.
Common add-on and fulfillment surprises
“The picture showed it, so I assumed it was included.”
Fix this by matching every desired item to the selected tier’s written reward list. A campaign image, stretch-goal graphic, or video is not proof that all tiers receive the item.
“Shipping looked small until I added accessories.”
Check whether the project uses combined-weight or stackable shipping. Ask whether a poster, box, or miniature ships separately and whether an add-on changes the service class.
“Tax was collected, but the carrier still asked for money.”
Review the distinction between sales tax or VAT and import duty. The campaign may have remitted one while leaving the other to the recipient.
“I planned to upgrade later, but the option disappeared.”
Later changes are discretionary and can close when production or fulfillment begins. Treat a future upgrade as unavailable unless the campaign gives a firm deadline and procedure.
“The pledge amount was affordable, but the final bill was not.”
Use the worksheet before pledging and reserve room for uncertain shipping or duties where the campaign says they remain your responsibility. Do not use a universal surcharge percentage: projects and destinations vary too widely for one industry-wide estimate.
What to ask the creator when the page is unclear
- Is the displayed pledge amount inclusive of shipping to my country?
- When and how will shipping be charged, and does the amount include add-ons?
- Will sales tax or VAT be collected at checkout or in a later pledge manager?
- Is import duty prepaid, or is the recipient responsible on delivery?
- Can I add this item after the campaign, and until what date?
- Can I reduce, upgrade, or cancel my pledge after the campaign closes?
- Are any rewards shipped separately, and could that create another shipping charge?
- Which currency will be charged, and can my payment provider add a conversion fee?
Request a direct answer rather than relying on a comment from another backer. Save the creator’s reply with the campaign terms, because a later pledge-manager screen may use different labels.
When is a higher tier actually the better choice?
Select the higher tier when it includes items you would otherwise buy as add-ons, contains an exclusive reward you value, and does not create a shipping or tax increase that outweighs the difference. Select the lower tier when its contents satisfy your must-have list and the higher bundle mainly adds duplicates or costly physical extras.
There is no universal best-value tier. Your destination, desired formats, tolerance for delivery uncertainty, and willingness to pay later determine the sensible choice. The defensible decision is the one whose included rewards and estimated delivered total you can explain item by item.
