For most Indian shops, UPI QR and card acceptance solve different parts of the same problem. A UPI QR setup is usually the simpler way to offer account-based payments, while cards add another payment route that may require a point-of-sale terminal or other acquiring infrastructure. Neither is universally cheaper: your merchant discount rate (MDR), equipment charges, settlement terms, customer mix and merchant category determine the real cost.
Use the comparison below to separate merchant fees from customer charges, understand what an acquiring bank actually does, and choose whether to offer UPI QR, cards or both.

UPI QR code vs card payments: the short answer
A UPI QR code is a merchant acceptance method supplied through an acquiring bank. The customer scans it with a supported app, chooses an eligible funding source and confirms with a UPI PIN or the authentication required by that flow. The merchant receives the payment under the settlement terms agreed with the acquirer.

- Choose UPI QR first when you want quick QR-based acceptance, have customers who already use UPI and can obtain suitable written terms from an acquirer.
- Add cards when customers request card payment, your average ticket or business model benefits from cards, or you need a separate acceptance route if a customer cannot use UPI.
- Offer both when the incremental card cost and equipment obligations are acceptable. A QR display and a card terminal are not substitutes: they support different payment routes unless your provider explicitly combines them.
Do not publish or rely on one “standard UPI MDR” or “standard card rate.” Charges vary by payment instrument, acquirer, merchant category, provider agreement and current rules.
What a merchant UPI QR code actually is
The acquirer supplies the infrastructure
NPCI’s merchant FAQ says a merchant must partner with an acquiring bank to enable UPI. That acquirer supplies the UPI infrastructure, onboards the merchant, performs compliance and risk checks, creates merchant identifiers and configures the merchant category code (MCC). The MCC is assigned during onboarding and can affect risk controls, eligibility and commercial terms.
NPCI identifies four merchant integration modes: QR, intent, app-based and collect. A printed or displayed QR is therefore one mode, not the entire UPI system. Ask the acquirer which mode is being enabled and how refunds, disputes, notifications and settlement are handled.
“UPI QR” does not always mean bank-account funding
A customer scanning a QR may pay from a linked bank account, but supported UPI flows can also use other funding sources. NPCI permits an eligible RuPay credit card to be linked to UPI and used for eligible merchant QR payments with UPI PIN authentication. This does not mean every QR, app or merchant category accepts card-funded UPI.
NPCI lists restricted or prohibited categories for the RuPay-credit-card-on-UPI route. Your acquirer should confirm whether this funding option is enabled for your MCC and which apps or instruments support it. Keep bank-account UPI and card-funded UPI separate when comparing fees: they may be treated differently in the merchant agreement.

A QR stand is presentation equipment, not activation
An acrylic or other physical stand can keep a QR visible at a counter, but it does not activate acceptance, identify the merchant or process a transaction. The operational requirement is a valid, acquirer-provided merchant setup and QR. Verify the merchant name and account details printed on any display before putting it into service.
How card acceptance differs
Acquiring agreement and acceptance hardware
RBI describes a merchant acquirer as a bank or NBFC that enters into an agreement with a merchant to process credit-card transactions. Depending on the offer, acceptance may use a countertop or mobile POS terminal, contactless capability, an online or app-based interface, or another approved method. The exact device, connectivity, paper-roll policy, replacement terms and supported card schemes are provider-specific.

At acquisition, ask for a written schedule that separates debit, credit and prepaid cards. RBI’s charge-disclosure direction instructs acquiring banks to unbundle MDR across those categories and explain the charges to merchants. Treat the agreement and its annexes—not a sales representative’s verbal quote—as the controlling record.
Costs: merchant fees, customer charges and what to verify
Keep the payer’s charge separate from the merchant’s MDR
MDR is a merchant-side fee category. The Government of India’s 24 March 2025 explainer defines it as a fee paid by merchants and businesses to a payment-processing company on debit- or credit-card transactions, generally calculated as a percentage of the transaction amount. A customer’s bank or app may have separate terms, but those do not tell you what your business will pay.
Before signing, request the complete merchant cost sheet. It should identify the percentage or fixed amount, applicable taxes, rental or purchase charges, service or maintenance fees, minimums, refund or chargeback costs, settlement deductions and any promotional period. Ask whether a quoted rate applies to every card category and every UPI funding source; often it does not.

What current UPI policy does—and does not—establish
A Ministry of Finance release dated 8 August 2026 states: “Consumers making payments will not face any transaction charges.” The release also says person-to-person transfers remain free and describes a proposed bill under which any future merchant MDR would be limited, threshold-based, nominal and far lower than debit- or credit-card MDR. It says an NPCI-headed UPI and Services Steering Committee would decide the MDR if the bill passes.

Do not treat it as permission to assume zero cost for every merchant. Obtain the current written schedule from your acquirer and check whether it distinguishes bank-account UPI, card-funded UPI, merchant size and MCC.
A bank schedule is an example, not an industry promise
India Post Payments Bank’s published merchant schedule lists UPI MDR at 0% for “Small Merchants” (turnover up to ₹20 lakh in the previous financial year) and “Other Merchants” (above ₹20 lakh). The schedule is one bank’s offer, not proof that every bank or payment provider charges zero. It also states that GST applies as applicable to payment instruments. Confirm that the schedule is current, that your onboarding entity qualifies and that no separate device, service or settlement fee applies.
Historical figures need their dates attached
The Government’s 24 March 2025 explainer described a framework in which debit-card MDR ceilings could be up to 0.90% and NPCI UPI person-to-merchant MDR up to 0.30%. It also noted that MDR on RuPay debit and BHIM-UPI transactions had been made zero from January 2020 under cited law. These are dated regulatory context, not a current universal quote for every instrument or merchant.
The same explainer reported that real-time transactions represented 49% of global real-time transactions in 2023, citing ACI Worldwide’s 2024 report. It also described an estimated ₹1,500 crore FY 2024–25 incentive scheme for low-value BHIM-UPI person-to-merchant transactions up to ₹2,000, covering 1 April 2024 through 31 March 2025. Neither figure sets today’s merchant price, and the historical incentive should not be assumed to continue.

Card MDR must come from your agreement
Ask the acquirer to show separate rates for debit, credit and prepaid cards, along with any network, terminal, service, settlement and tax charges. Compare the effective rupee cost at your typical ticket sizes rather than looking only at a headline percentage. A low percentage with a monthly terminal fee may cost more than a higher percentage with no rental; the answer depends on your volume and average transaction value.
How to set up a UPI QR code for your shop
The exact screens differ by acquirer, but the commercial and compliance sequence is broadly the same.
- Choose an acquiring bank or authorised acquiring provider. Ask whether it supports a static QR, dynamic QR, intent, app-based or collect flow, and whether it supports the UPI apps and funding sources your customers use.
- Submit onboarding information. Expect business identity, bank-account, address, ownership and tax or registration documents as requested. The acquirer performs compliance and risk assessment.
- Confirm your MCC and merchant identifier. Ask the provider to state the assigned MCC and check that it accurately describes your business. Ask whether the MCC restricts card-funded UPI or other categories.
- Get the written commercial schedule. Confirm UPI charges by funding source, GST treatment, refunds, disputes, settlement account, settlement timing and any minimums or service fees.
- Receive and verify the QR. Check that the displayed merchant name and account details match your business. A generic QR or an employee’s personal QR is not a substitute for the contracted merchant setup.
- Test before opening. Make a low-value payment with a supported app, confirm the payer’s success screen, verify the merchant notification and reconcile the credit in the agreed account or merchant pool. Ask how a failed, reversed or duplicate payment appears.
- Display it securely. Place the acquirer-provided QR where customers can scan it without obstruction. A stand is optional; it does not replace onboarding or transaction monitoring.
- Set a reconciliation routine. Match daily transaction records, settlement credits, refunds and reversals. Keep the acquirer’s support number and merchant identifier available for disputes.
How to set up card acceptance
- Approach a merchant acquirer. Ask which debit, credit and prepaid categories, contactless methods and card networks it supports for your MCC.
- Request a complete written quote. It should unbundle MDR by card category and list terminal purchase or rental, connectivity, maintenance, replacement, paper, refund, chargeback, settlement and tax terms.
- Confirm settlement. The agreement should state the destination account, settlement schedule, cut-off times, holds, reserves and treatment of weekends or bank holidays. There is no single card-settlement timing that applies to every acquirer.
- Complete verification and installation. Provide the requested business documents, then have the provider provision the terminal or other acceptance channel. Confirm who owns the device and what happens if it fails.
- Test each intended method. Run a small contactless, chip-and-PIN or other supported transaction, verify the receipt and check the merchant portal or settlement report. Do not infer that one successful card type proves every card category is enabled.
- Train staff on declines and refunds. A declined transaction is not proof that the customer lacks funds; it may reflect a disabled card type, offline terminal, risk rule or connectivity issue. Follow the acquirer’s refund procedure rather than handing back cash without a record.
How money moves and when you receive it
UPI settlement
NPCI’s merchant FAQ says the merchant receives funds immediately after customer confirmation into the merchant pool or bank account, according to the merchant’s agreement. “Immediately” in that description does not override a provider’s reconciliation, reserve, refund or settlement terms. Read the contract to identify the credited account, transaction status that counts as final and the process for a payment shown as successful to the customer but missing from your records.
Card settlement
Card settlement timing, cut-off rules and holds are set by the acquiring agreement. Ask whether the quoted schedule is calendar-day or business-day based and how weekends, public holidays, refunds, chargebacks and suspected fraud affect the amount you receive. No universal timing should be assumed from the fact that a terminal approved a transaction.
UPI QR and card payments compared
| Decision factor | UPI QR | Card acceptance |
|---|---|---|
| Primary infrastructure | Acquirer-provided UPI merchant setup; QR, intent, app-based and collect are possible modes. | Merchant-acquirer infrastructure such as a POS terminal or another approved acceptance channel. |
| Funding source | Often a linked bank account; eligible RuPay credit-card-on-UPI flows may work for supported merchant categories. | Debit, credit or prepaid card, subject to the acquirer’s enabled categories and network support. |
| Merchant pricing | Depends on provider, MCC, merchant size, funding source and current rules; a universal zero or fixed MDR cannot be assumed. | Compare separate debit, credit and prepaid MDR plus equipment, service, settlement and tax terms. |
| Customer charges | The 8 August 2026 Ministry of Finance release says consumers will not face UPI transaction charges; this does not set your merchant-side price. | Any customer-side terms are distinct from your merchant agreement; obtain the acquirer’s disclosure. |
| Settlement | NPCI describes receipt after customer confirmation under the merchant agreement. | Timing and holds are provider-specific and must be confirmed in writing. |
| Hardware | QR display is optional presentation equipment; the valid acquirer setup is essential. | Often a POS terminal or other approved device or integration, depending on the offer. |
| Best operational fit | Counter sales where customers can scan and authenticate with a supported app. | Customers who prefer cards, have no usable UPI route or need a separate payment option. |
When UPI QR is the better fit
Small counters and low-complexity operations
QR can avoid the physical terminal workflow and let a merchant start with a visible payment code. It is practical where customers already carry a UPI-enabled phone and staff can verify the merchant notification and reconcile transactions.

Businesses prioritising a QR-first checkout
If your customers routinely ask to scan, a QR mode may match their behaviour better than handing over a card terminal. Confirm whether you need a static or transaction-specific dynamic QR and how the provider handles refunds.
Merchants who have checked the actual rate
UPI is attractive only after you know the applicable merchant charges. A provider’s zero-MDR schedule may be genuine for its defined categories, while another provider may quote different terms or add equipment and service charges.
When card acceptance is worth adding
Customers explicitly request cards
Card acceptance can prevent lost sales when a customer’s phone, app, bank account or UPI limit is unavailable. It also gives you a distinct route if a QR transaction fails.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Higher-value or business purchases
For larger tickets or business customers, card acceptance may fit established purchasing processes. Calculate the cost using your actual average ticket, not a generic MDR example, and include terminal and settlement charges.
You need payment redundancy
Offering both methods reduces dependence on one network, device or customer authentication path. It also increases reconciliation work, so decide who will monitor two dashboards or settlement reports.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every QR payment “free.” Separate consumer charges from merchant MDR and distinguish bank-account UPI from card-funded UPI.
- Using a personal QR for business receipts. Use the contracted merchant QR so the legal name, MCC, settlement account and support trail are correct.
- Assuming RuPay credit on UPI works everywhere. Confirm eligible categories, supported apps and your acquirer’s configuration.
- Buying a stand and assuming acceptance is active. The stand only displays a QR; onboarding and the acquirer’s infrastructure do the processing.
- Accepting a verbal card quote. Require unbundled debit, credit and prepaid charges and retain the signed schedule or annex.
- Confusing a success screen with settled funds. Reconcile the merchant record and bank or pool credit, then follow the provider’s process for reversals and disputes.
- Relying on an old rate card. Policy statements, incentives and provider schedules change. Reconfirm volatile terms before signing and periodically thereafter.
A practical decision checklist
- Estimate the share of customers likely to use UPI, debit cards, credit cards and other methods.
- List your typical and maximum transaction values.
- Obtain written UPI and card schedules from at least the providers you are seriously considering.
- Calculate monthly cost as MDR plus GST and fixed charges, then add likely terminal, connectivity and support costs.
- Verify your MCC, eligible payment categories, settlement account and settlement timing.
- Test a real transaction, refund and reconciliation report before relying on the setup.
- Decide whether the additional sales and payment resilience from cards justify their incremental cost and operational work.
For many merchants, the answer is not UPI versus cards but a controlled combination: use the QR route that your acquirer supports on clear terms, then add cards when customer demand and the written economics justify the equipment and fees.
