Threat hunting is an activity; managed detection and response (MDR) is a managed service. A hunt is a focused search for signs of adversary behavior that alerts may have missed. MDR can bundle continuous telemetry collection, alert monitoring, investigation, proactive hunting and incident response. A managed security service provider (MSSP) may deliver either capability—or both—so the label alone does not tell you what is included. Define the service boundary, authority and outcomes in the contract.
The short answer: capability versus operating model
Threat hunting describes what analysts do: formulate a hypothesis about attacker activity, search available data, validate suspicious behavior and turn findings into detections or response actions. It can be a one-time engagement, a scheduled exercise or an activity embedded in a security operations center (SOC).

MDR describes how security operations are delivered: a provider operates monitoring and response functions for a customer, usually using endpoint, identity, network, cloud and log telemetry. Depending on the agreement, MDR may include proactive hunting, alert triage, investigation, containment, eradication guidance, recovery support and incident communications.

An MSSP might manage security tools and forward validated alerts, or it might provide a full SOC with MDR-level investigation and response. Treat that as evidence of overlap—not a worldwide definition.

What threat hunting actually involves
Hypothesis-driven searches
Hunting starts with a question such as “Could an attacker be using valid credentials to move from a workstation to a file server?” Analysts select data sources, define expected attacker behavior and search for weak or indirect signals. A hunt may uncover activity that never generated a rule-based alert, expose a blind spot in telemetry, or disprove the hypothesis while improving detection coverage.
Data, analytics and validation
Useful hunts depend on reliable, time-synchronized data. Common inputs include endpoint process and authentication events, identity-provider logs, DNS and proxy records, cloud control-plane activity, email telemetry, firewall flows and existing detection alerts. Analysts pivot across users, hosts, accounts, hashes, domains, command lines and timestamps, then validate suspicious findings against business context. A single unusual event is not automatically an incident.
Outputs beyond a finding
A mature hunt produces operational artifacts: a documented hypothesis, queries, evidence, confidence assessment, affected assets, recommended containment, new detection logic and a statement of remaining uncertainty. Findings should enter the incident workflow when there is credible malicious activity; otherwise they should become hardening or monitoring work. Hunting without a path to detection engineering and response can become an isolated research exercise.

What an MDR service normally covers
Continuous monitoring and triage
MDR providers ingest agreed telemetry, monitor it around the clock or during specified hours, and triage alerts. The service should state which systems are monitored, retention periods, hours of coverage, alert severity definitions and the expected time to acknowledge and escalate.
Investigation and threat hunting
Human analysts investigate alerts and may run proactive hunts using threat intelligence, behavioral analytics or customer-specific hypotheses. “Proactive” does not necessarily mean continuous hunting; some contracts provide scheduled hunts, while others hunt when intelligence or an incident creates a trigger. Ask for the cadence, method and evidence delivered for each hunt.
Response and recovery support
MDR can include endpoint isolation, account disablement, indicator blocking, malware removal guidance and coordination with an internal incident-response team. Those actions require explicit authority. Some providers can execute containment automatically; others can only recommend a change and wait for customer approval. The contract must identify which actions are pre-authorized, which require approval, who can override a decision and how emergency actions are recorded.
Reporting and communications
Operational reporting may include open and closed incidents, investigative timelines, response actions, detection coverage, telemetry health and risk trends. Incident communications should define the notification channel, escalation contacts, update frequency, severity thresholds and responsibilities for legal, regulatory, customer and executive communications. A dashboard alone is not a response plan.

Why MSSP and MDR boundaries overlap
Provider labels reflect marketing and business models, not a binding standard. One vendor explanation describes an MSSP as complementing an existing team and MDR as more likely to replace a SOC and conduct proactive hunting. Another buyer guide characterizes MDR as human-led investigation, active hunting and response, while presenting MSSPs as broader tool-management providers. Those are useful tendencies, not rules.
The New York State Housing and Community Renewal managed-security-services procurement illustrates the practical issue. Its requested scope includes experienced staff, continuous status reporting, SIEM, EDR, MDR and threat-intelligence capabilities, 24/7 monitoring, triage, investigation, response and cyber-incident-response-team support. A buyer could therefore procure an “MSSP” whose statement of work contains the capabilities many people associate with MDR.
Compare the service description and responsibility matrix instead of assuming that “MSSP” means alert forwarding or that “MDR” means replacement of your SOC. Your internal team may retain architecture, risk acceptance and major-incident command while the provider handles monitoring and first response; another agreement may transfer most SOC functions to the provider.

Use threat intelligence to make hunts relevant
Start with critical assets and intelligence requirements
MITRE’s ATT&CK Threat Intelligence Program mitigation M1019 (version 1.1, last modified December 24, 2024) recommends assigning responsibility, setting intelligence requirements around critical assets, using internal and external data, mapping intelligence to adversary tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), and evaluating the program. In practice, identify the systems whose compromise would cause unacceptable harm, then define the attacker behaviors you need to detect around them.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For example, a payment platform may require intelligence on credential theft, cloud-token abuse and data staging. A hunt can then examine authentication anomalies, unusual administrative API calls and large transfers from sensitive repositories rather than searching indiscriminately across every event.
Define what “intelligence” contains
NIST SP 800-150, published in October 2016, defines cyber threat information broadly as “any information that can help an organization identify, assess, monitor, and respond to cyber threats.” It includes indicators of compromise, adversary TTPs, suggested detection, containment and prevention actions, and incident-analysis findings. The document also addresses sharing goals, sources, scope, distribution rules and sharing communities.
Ask the provider how intelligence is sourced, scored, dated and retired. A domain indicator without context may create false positives; a TTP mapped to a critical asset can produce a durable analytic. Record handling restrictions and confidence so intelligence can be shared safely with the provider and internal teams.

Map behavior without claiming endorsement
ATT&CK can provide a common vocabulary for describing adversary behavior and coverage gaps. MITRE says ATT&CK is updated bi-annually and is derived mainly from public threat intelligence and incident reporting. Its use does not imply MITRE endorsement of a provider or product. Require the MSSP to show which techniques it can detect with your telemetry, which are inferred through analytics and which remain uncovered.
Designing the responsibility boundary
Put a RACI-style matrix in the statement of work. At minimum, assign ownership for:
- Telemetry onboarding, parser maintenance, storage, retention and data-quality monitoring.
- Alert validation, severity assignment, case creation and false-positive tuning.
- Proactive hunts, hunt hypotheses, query development and detection engineering.
- Investigation, evidence preservation, forensic collection and incident scoping.
- Containment actions such as endpoint isolation, account disablement, blocking indicators and network segmentation.
- Eradication, patching, credential rotation, restoration and other customer-side remediation.
- Incident communications, executive escalation, regulator or law-enforcement coordination and post-incident review.
- Service-level measurement, access reviews, audit evidence and termination-time data export.
NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3, finalized April 3, 2025, integrates incident-response recommendations throughout cybersecurity risk management and aims to help organizations prepare, reduce incident impact, and improve detection, response and recovery. Use that lifecycle perspective: response is not a ticket handed off after detection; preparation, governance, lessons learned and recovery affect the service design.
Remote-management tools change the risk calculation
MSSPs and MSPs often use remote monitoring and management (RMM) software for endpoint monitoring and remote host interaction. The NSA states that “RMM software is commonly used by managed service providers (MSPs) and help desks to provide security and/or technical support.” The same privileged access can be abused by malicious actors.
Contract and architecture controls
- Inventory every RMM component, tenant, administrator and integration used to access your environment.
- Require phishing-resistant multifactor authentication, individual accounts, least privilege and just-in-time elevation where supported.
- Separate provider administration from customer production identities and prohibit shared credentials.
- Restrict management paths by network, device posture and approved maintenance windows.
- Log provider actions, command execution, session recordings where lawful, configuration changes and failed access attempts into an independent monitoring destination.
- Define how a suspected provider-account compromise triggers suspension, investigation, customer notification and credential rotation.
- Test that emergency access can be revoked without disabling your ability to recover systems.
Do not treat RMM visibility as proof of MDR. Confirm which events the provider can see, which actions it can perform and how quickly it can contain misuse of its own access.

1. Translate marketing into a service inventory
Request a list of included technologies and data sources by environment: endpoints and servers, identity, email, SaaS, cloud control planes, network devices, DNS, vulnerability data and business applications. Note unsupported operating systems, minimum sensor versions, licensing dependencies, retention limits and data residency.
2. Test the monitoring promise
Ask whether coverage is 24/7, follow-the-sun or business-hours; where analysts are located; how alerts are queued; and what happens during a provider outage. Request definitions for acknowledgement, triage, escalation and customer notification, with the clock starting point clearly stated.

3. Test the hunting promise
Ask for the planned cadence, analyst qualifications, data used, sample deliverables and a process for converting findings into detections. Determine whether hunts are included in the base fee, limited by hours, triggered only by incidents or charged separately. A phrase such as “proactive threat hunting” is incomplete without these details.
4. Test response authority
Build a scenario table for a compromised privileged account, ransomware on a server, malicious cloud persistence and suspected provider-account abuse. For each scenario, record who decides, who executes, maximum approval delay, rollback method, evidence retained and customer notification path.
5. Test integration with your incident plan
Map provider procedures to your contacts, crisis-management process, forensic counsel, insurance requirements and recovery priorities. Run a tabletop exercise before production onboarding. Include after-hours contacts and a backup route if the normal portal or email system is unavailable.
6. Test reporting and exit rights
Specify case exports, raw and normalized logs, hunt reports, detection rules, timelines and audit records. Define the format, retention period and cost of exporting data when the contract ends. Ensure that the provider cannot leave you without the configurations needed to continue monitoring.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure modes and fixes
“We bought MDR, so hunting is guaranteed.”
Why it fails: MDR scopes differ, and hunting may be event-driven or optional. Fix: specify frequency, hypotheses, data sources, deliverables and acceptance criteria.
“Our MSSP handles security, so internal ownership is unnecessary.”
Why it fails: The customer still owns business-risk decisions, asset context, remediation and often regulatory communications. Fix: maintain named internal owners and an escalation tree even when the provider runs the SOC.
“More alerts mean better detection.”
Why it fails: High-volume, low-context alerts exhaust analysts and obscure material incidents. Fix: measure validated incidents, investigation quality, detection coverage and response timeliness, not raw alert counts alone.
Best Value
“ATT&CK coverage is a security score.”
Why it fails: Technique checklists can hide telemetry gaps, environment differences and untested detections. Fix: tie each claimed technique to a data source, analytic, test method, confidence and response action.
“Remote access is trusted because the provider is trusted.”
Why it fails: Legitimate RMM credentials and tools are attractive targets. Fix: isolate management paths, enforce strong authentication, monitor provider activity and rehearse rapid revocation.
Metrics that reveal whether the service works
Agree on metrics that reflect risk reduction and operational performance. Useful measures include telemetry availability by source, percentage of critical assets covered, time to acknowledge and escalate, time from escalation to containment, investigation completeness, repeat false-positive rate, hunt findings that become detections, overdue remediation items and successful tabletop or control tests.
Interpret metrics with scope and conditions attached. A fast acknowledgement is not a fast containment if customer approval is required. A high ATT&CK technique count is not meaningful when the relevant logs are missing. Require trend data, exceptions and explanations for missed service levels rather than a single aggregate score.
Where each model fits
Use focused hunting when
- You have a capable SOC but need an independent search for a suspected technique or campaign.
- You are validating new telemetry, investigating a near miss or prioritizing detection engineering.
- You need a time-bounded assessment before deciding on a managed service.
Use MDR when
- You need continuous monitoring and investigation but cannot staff all required shifts.
- You want a defined escalation and containment capability integrated with your incident plan.
- You need analysts who can combine managed telemetry with proactive hunts and threat intelligence.
Use a broader MSSP arrangement when
- You need managed SIEM, EDR, identity, network or cloud controls alongside operational support.
- Your internal team will retain incident command while the provider operates selected tools and workflows.
- You want one provider to coordinate multiple security technologies, provided the boundaries and response duties are explicit.
These options are not mutually exclusive. An organization can retain an internal SOC, buy periodic hunts and contract an MSSP for telemetry and tooling. Another can outsource monitoring and response through an MDR scope while keeping remediation and risk decisions in-house.
Practical contract checklist
- Scope: named assets, environments, users, geographies, technologies and exclusions.
- Coverage: monitoring hours, holiday coverage, maintenance windows and outage procedures.
- Hunting: cadence, triggers, hypotheses, intelligence inputs, analyst time and deliverables.
- Response: pre-authorized actions, approvals, rollback, evidence and emergency contacts.
- Telemetry: onboarding, health checks, retention, normalization, data residency and export.
- Access: provider identities, RMM controls, privileged access reviews, session logging and revocation.
- Service levels: acknowledgement, triage, escalation, containment and reporting clocks, including exclusions.
- Governance: risk acceptance, change control, audit rights, subcontractors and confidentiality.
- Continuity: provider-disruption plan, alternate communications and disaster recovery responsibilities.
- Exit: transition assistance, rule and case export, data deletion certification and fee schedule.
Bottom line for MSSPs
Sell and operate the actual capability, not the acronym. Threat hunting is the disciplined search for hidden adversary activity; MDR is a managed service that may combine monitoring, hunting, investigation and response; MSSP is an umbrella label whose boundaries vary. Buyers should compare telemetry, staffing, hunt cadence, response authority, evidence, integration and exit rights. Providers that document those details can be evaluated on outcomes rather than branding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an MSSP automatically provide MDR?
No. An MSSP may provide tool management, monitoring, MDR capabilities or a mixture. The statement of work must specify continuous coverage, investigation, hunting and response responsibilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan threat hunting be purchased without MDR?
Yes. Hunting can be a one-time or recurring analytic engagement. Unless continuous monitoring and response are separately contracted, a hunt does not establish those capabilities.
Who is allowed to isolate an endpoint during an MDR incident?
The contract should name the authority. It may be the provider under pre-approved conditions, the customer after approval, or a jointly defined escalation process; there is no universal rule.
How often does MITRE ATT&CK change?
MITRE’s FAQ says ATT&CK is updated bi-annually. The framework is a vocabulary for behavior and coverage discussions, not an endorsement of any provider or product.
