How to Choose a Console or TV for GTA 6 Without Overspending

The least expensive sensible way to play Grand Theft Auto VI is to use a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S you already own. If you need a console, start with Xbox Series S when digital-only games and 1440p output are acceptable; choose PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X when you need discs, native-4K positioning, a particular game library or existing accessories. Replace your television only if its resolution, input lag, HDR, refresh rate or connectivity prevents you from using a feature you actually value. GTA VI’s final resolution and frame-rate modes have not been published, so buying an expensive 8K set or a 120Hz display solely on a promise of a specific GTA VI mode is speculation.

What is officially known about GTA VI

Rockstar Games’ official platform listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PlayStation 4 or Xbox One launch version is listed in the cited official announcements, so buying an older last-generation console will not provide an established way to play the game.

Take-Two Interactive’s 2026 pre-order announcement gives November 19, 2026 as the launch date and lists a standard price of $79.99. That is the base game price stated by the publisher; taxes, delivery, regional pricing, special editions and retailer discounts can change the amount you pay.

The hardware capabilities are clearer than the game’s final rendering targets. Microsoft describes Series S as disc-free, designed for 1440p output with the ability to upscale to 4K. Microsoft positions Series X for native 4K and documents a UHD Blu-ray drive, with 1TB and 2TB storage variants in its Series X range. Sony documents PlayStation 5 support for 4K 120Hz televisions, 8K televisions and variable refresh rate (VRR) over HDMI 2.1. These are console output capabilities, not a guarantee that GTA VI will use every mode. The cited official material does not publish GTA VI resolution, frame-rate or graphics-mode settings.

Choose based on the console you already own

If you already have a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X, keeping it is normally the biggest saving. Every one of those systems appears on Rockstar’s listed launch platforms. A second console would add hardware cost without an established GTA VI benefit, and a new television is unnecessary if your current screen is reliable and comfortable to use.

Your situation Sensible choice Reason How to control spending
You own a PS5 or any Xbox Series X|S Keep it It is on Rockstar’s official platform list. Do not replace hardware for unannounced performance modes.
You need the lowest-cost new console and buy digitally Xbox Series S Disc-free design, 1440p target and 4K upscaling. Skip a disc drive and native-4K hardware you will not use.
You buy physical games or UHD Blu-ray discs Disc-capable PS5 or Xbox Series X A drive supports physical purchases; Series X specifically includes UHD Blu-ray support. Compare the console premium with game discounts, resale and your disc collection.
You want native-4K positioning and more storage options Xbox Series X Microsoft documents native 4K and 1TB/2TB Series X variants. Pay for those capabilities only if your display and library benefit from them.
You already own PlayStation games or accessories PlayStation 5 It keeps your platform ecosystem and supports 4K/120Hz and VRR output. Count retained controllers, headsets, subscriptions and purchased games.

How to decide among the three current consoles

Xbox Series S: the digital-first budget path

Series S is the straightforward choice when your priority is the lowest sensible entry cost and you are comfortable downloading every game. Microsoft calls it a disc-free console designed for 1440p, with 4K upscaling. That makes it a practical match for a 1080p or 1440p television, and it can feed a 4K set even though its positioning is not native 4K.

Its limitation is the buying model rather than GTA VI eligibility: you cannot insert a game disc or UHD Blu-ray. Physical copies, used-game bargains, lending and resale therefore do not fit this system. Check your internet connection, download allowance and available storage before choosing an all-digital console. If you usually wait for digital sales and already use the Xbox ecosystem, the lack of a drive may save money rather than cost it.

Series S is officially on the launch-platform list, but no cited source states the game’s Series S resolution or frame-rate. Treat it as an eligible console, not as proof of a particular visual mode.

PlayStation 5: the ecosystem choice

Choose a PlayStation 5 when you already own PlayStation games, controllers or other accessories, or when Sony’s platform features and user interface matter to you. Sony documents output support for 4K 120Hz televisions, 8K televisions and VRR over HDMI 2.1. Those options can make a compatible television more versatile for many games, but they do not establish a GTA VI performance target.

Rank #2
X Box Series S All-Digital Console
  • What's in the box: Xbox Series S 512GB console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller, High Speed HDMI cable.
  • CPU: 8X Cores @ 3.6 GHz (3.4 GHz w/SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU; GPU: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs @1.565 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU; SOC Die Size: 197.05 mm2.
  • Memory: 10GB GDDR6 128 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 8GB @ 224 GB/s, 2GB @ 56 GB/s.; Internal Storage: 512GB Custom NVME SSD
  • Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FP.
  • HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

Decide between a disc-capable and digital configuration according to how you buy games. A disc model can use physical editions and used copies; a digital configuration avoids the drive cost but commits you to downloads. Include the value of your existing library and the possibility of reselling a physical game when calculating the premium. Do not buy a more expensive model solely because you expect an unannounced GTA VI frame-rate mode.

Xbox Series X: for discs, native-4K positioning and storage choice

Series X is aimed at buyers who want a disc drive, native-4K hardware positioning or the larger storage options Microsoft documents for the range. The UHD Blu-ray drive also lets the console serve as a movie player. Those capabilities are useful when your television is 4K, you maintain a physical collection or you want to avoid an all-digital library.

The extra hardware is not automatically better value. If you play only downloaded games on a 1080p or 1440p screen, Series S may meet your needs at lower cost. If you already own a Series S, upgrading before GTA VI’s published technical details are available is a personal preference, not a documented requirement.

Disc or digital: calculate the recurring cost

GTA VI’s physical edition deserves a careful check. Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code usable for the digital download. In other words, the box does not necessarily mean that the game data is supplied entirely on a playable disc. Confirm the edition’s regional terms and download requirements at purchase.

Use this checklist before paying a console premium for a drive:

Rank #3
Microsoft (Refurbished) Xbox Series S Console - 512GB (Renewed)
  • Access your favorite entertainment through apps like YouTube, Netflix, and more
  • Enjoy over 100 games right out of the box with a 1 month Xbox Game Pass trial
  • Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
  • Play with friends and family near and farsitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
  • Xbox One games and accessories work together
  • Do you routinely buy used games, borrow discs or resell finished games?
  • Do you own UHD Blu-ray movies that you want one device to play?
  • Are physical launch editions discounted more often than digital releases in your region?
  • Is your internet connection fast and uncapped enough for a large download?
  • Will the drive let you keep using accessories and games you already own?

If most answers favor downloads, a disc drive may be an expensive feature that sits unused. If most favor physical media, compare the one-time console premium with the savings and resale value over several games rather than comparing hardware prices alone.

Build a realistic GTA VI budget

Budget item What to include Cost-control decision
Console New purchase, or the value of the PS5/Xbox Series system you already own. Keep an eligible console instead of upgrading for speculation.
Grand Theft Auto VI $79.99 standard price announced by Take-Two Interactive in 2026. Check regional pricing, taxes, editions and launch discounts.
Physical or digital edition Rockstar says the physical version includes a download code for the digital download. Choose the format that matches your buying habits and internet access.
Television Only a replacement if your current set lacks a feature you will use. Do not budget a new screen by default.
Storage expansion Consider it only after checking the console’s free space and your game library. Buy when needed instead of pre-emptively.
Second controller or headset Optional accessories for local multiplayer or voice chat. Reuse working accessories where compatibility allows.
Platform subscription Only if the console or your multiplayer plans require one. Include recurring fees in the first-year total.
Tax, delivery and regional pricing Amounts are not normalized in the cited figures. Use the final checkout total for your country, not a headline US price.

Should you replace your TV?

Keep the current set when it already works

Keep your television when it is dependable, has acceptable input lag, displays the resolution you enjoy and provides the HDR experience you want. GTA VI has no cited official 4K/120Hz guarantee, so replacing a functioning screen solely for this game can buy features you may never see.

Before shopping, test the existing set with your console. Enable its game or low-latency mode, check whether VRR works, confirm that HDR engages correctly and make sure the console is connected to a suitable HDMI input. A set that passes those checks may be a better value than a new model with specifications you will not use.

Prioritize features that current consoles can use

When a replacement is justified, look for 4K resolution, a 120Hz panel, VRR, HDR, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and a usable game/low-latency mode. These features align with the documented output capabilities of PS5 and Xbox Series X. A 120Hz panel is useful only when the game and console output a compatible high-refresh signal; the panel alone cannot create 120 frames per second.

TV feature Why it matters What to verify before buying
4K resolution Matches the resolution class targeted by PS5 and Series X. Check the actual input resolution supported at the desired refresh rate.
120Hz refresh rate Allows compatible content to display high-refresh output. Confirm that 4K at 120Hz works on the HDMI ports you will use.
VRR Helps synchronize refresh timing with a console’s variable output. Check the supported VRR range and whether it works over HDMI 2.1.
HDMI 2.1 Provides the connection standard used for advanced 4K high-refresh features. Count full-featured ports; some sets provide only one.
HDR Expands contrast and color when a game and display support the same format. Evaluate brightness, local dimming and game-mode behavior, not the badge alone.
Input lag and game mode Controls how quickly your inputs appear on screen. Use independent measurements where available and enable the low-latency mode.

Do not pay for 8K just for GTA VI

Sony lists 8K output support for PS5, but the cited sources do not show GTA VI rendering at 8K. An 8K television can be a broader home-theater purchase, yet it is not an evidence-based GTA VI requirement. Spend the difference on a better 4K panel, lower input lag, a useful warranty or simply keep the money.

  • Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

HDR format is a preference, not a purchase requirement

A 2026 TV comparison reports Dolby Vision gaming support on Xbox Series X but not on PS5, and notes that Samsung televisions do not support Dolby Vision gaming. Treat that as a format preference after choosing the console, not as a reason to change platforms for GTA VI. Confirm the exact TV model’s HDR formats and gaming behavior because support can vary by set and input.

Match size to the room

Choose screen size from seating distance and room layout rather than a logo or the largest number on the box. Sit at your normal gaming distance, consider whether subtitles and interface text are comfortable, then compare models at that size. A smaller television with lower latency, better VRR behavior and a stronger warranty can be a better gaming purchase than a larger screen with weak connectivity.

Console-and-TV combinations that make sense

Lowest sensible total

Use an existing compatible television and buy Xbox Series S if you need a console and are happy with digital games. This combination avoids paying for a disc drive and native-4K positioning. It remains an officially eligible GTA VI setup; the game’s final Series S modes are simply not announced.

Physical-game household

Pair a disc-capable PS5 or Xbox Series X with your current TV if you buy discs, use UHD Blu-ray or rely on resale. Upgrade the screen only if the current set lacks a feature you can identify, such as acceptable latency or an HDMI input that supports your preferred signal.

Existing PlayStation owner with a capable 4K screen

Keep the PS5 and use the television’s game mode, VRR and HDR settings if they work correctly. Buying another console would duplicate your library and accessories without an official GTA VI advantage.

New 4K/120Hz setup

Choose the console according to discs and ecosystem first, then select a 4K 120Hz VRR HDMI 2.1 television with measured low latency. This maximizes compatibility with documented console features while avoiding the unsupported claim that GTA VI must run at 4K and 120 frames per second.

A step-by-step buying process

  1. Inventory what you own. Write down your console model, television resolution, HDMI port labels, available storage, controllers, headset and purchased games.
  2. Confirm platform eligibility. Keep a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X; do not buy a PS4 or Xbox One expecting an announced GTA VI launch version.
  3. Set the game budget. Start with the publisher’s $79.99 standard price, then add your local tax, delivery and any edition difference.
  4. Choose your media format. Decide whether the download-only model suits your internet access and buying habits. If not, select a disc-capable console and verify the physical edition’s download-code terms.
  5. Price the console by total ownership. Add storage, a second controller, headset and subscriptions only when you need them. Include the value of existing accessories and games.
  6. Test the current TV. Enable game mode, HDR and VRR where supported, and check whether the result is comfortable. Keep the TV if it meets your needs.
  7. Specify a replacement TV. Require only the features you will use: 4K, low latency, HDR, VRR, 120Hz and enough HDMI 2.1 ports for your devices.
  8. Compare final checkout prices. Account for regional pricing, taxes, shipping, warranty length and return terms instead of comparing US list prices alone.
  9. Recheck claims at launch. Before paying a premium for a particular resolution or frame-rate expectation, look for the game’s final published modes; they are not established by the cited announcements.

Common overspending mistakes

  • Buying a new console when an eligible one is already at home. The official platform list makes an upgrade unnecessary for access alone.
  • Assuming 4K branding proves GTA VI will render at native 4K. Console output capability and a game’s internal mode are different things.
  • Paying for 8K without an 8K use case. PS5 support does not establish an 8K GTA VI mode.
  • Ignoring the disc-versus-download decision. A cheap disc-free console can become poor value if you regularly buy, lend or resell physical games.
  • Counting only the screen size. Input lag, VRR range, HDMI 2.1 port count, HDR performance, warranty and viewing distance affect the experience more directly.
  • Forgetting recurring and regional costs. Subscriptions, taxes, delivery and storage can materially change the first-year total.

The practical rule is simple: preserve an existing PS5 or Xbox Series console, choose Series S for a genuinely digital 1440p-oriented budget setup, and pay for PS5 or Series X features only when your discs, library or display justify them. Buy a new TV for a real limitation in your current screen—not for an unpublished GTA VI specification.
