To previewing and installing desktop pets in the Codex app, open Pets from the profile menu or Settings in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS or Windows. Choose a companion, then enter /pet or select Show pet from the command menu. To install a custom pet, upload a transparent PNG or WebP sprite sheet that is 1536 × 1872 pixels and no larger than 20 MiB.
Codex is a mode within the ChatGPT desktop app, rather than a separate desktop application. Pets are optional visual companions: choosing one changes appearance, not how ChatGPT completes tasks. Read OpenAI’s Pets guide.

Where desktop pets work
The floating pet is documented for the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows. The Codex IDE extension does not have a pet picker or floating overlay. On the web, pets can appear inside supported ChatGPT Work chats, but the desktop overlay, activity tray, and /pet command are not available there.

How to preview and show a built-in pet
- Open the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS or Windows.
- Open the profile menu and choose Pets, or open Settings and go to Pets.
- Choose a built-in pet to preview and select it. The guide also lists Mini as an option for showing chat controls without a pet.
- In Codex, enter
/pet, or open the command menu and choose Show pet.
To dismiss the companion, use the hide control shown in the app. Its label may change between releases.
How to install a custom pet
Prepare a sprite sheet that meets all of the documented upload requirements before selecting it in Pets:

Open the Pets controls through the profile menu or Settings and use the custom-pet upload option to select the file. The OpenAI guide documents the accepted file requirements; exact upload labels may vary as the interface changes.
A Codex Settings reference hosted on a documentation mirror describes a hatch-pet skill for creating a pet. Because that is secondary documentation, check the current Codex interface and live availability before relying on its steps.

Pets respect the operating system’s reduced-motion setting. When reduced motion is enabled, the pet uses a still frame rather than sprite animation.
