In Express, verify the CAPTCHA token on the server after parsing the request body and before the signup handler creates an account. A browser widget token is untrusted until the provider confirms it. For Cloudflare Turnstile, that confirmation requires a server-side Siteverify request; placing a widget on the page without this check does not protect account creation.
Where CAPTCHA middleware belongs in an Express signup flow
Express executes middleware in the order it is registered. The request body parser must run before middleware reads the submitted token, and the verification gate must run before any handler that creates a user.

Scope the gate to the signup POST route or its router rather than applying it to unrelated requests. On successful verification, the middleware calls next(); otherwise it ends the request without reaching createUser.
Implement a Turnstile verification gate
The following example reads Turnstile’s default cf-turnstile-response field, posts the token and server-held secret to Siteverify, and permits signup only when the provider reports success. Store the secret in server-side configuration, such as an environment variable, never in browser code.

}The five-second timeout is an example of a finite timeout, not a provider-mandated value; choose one appropriate to your service’s latency budget. The hostname and action checks are useful when your deployment configures those values: set them to the expected signup hostname and action, and do not accept arbitrary context. If you use a different form field name, change the lookup accordingly. Turnstile permits form-encoded or JSON Siteverify requests; its documented optional parameters include remoteip and idempotency_key. Use an idempotency key when safely retrying a verification request.
Handle Express 4 and Express 5 async middleware correctly
Express 5 forwards a rejected promise or thrown error from promise-returning middleware to error handling. In Express 4, asynchronous errors must be passed to next(); wrap the middleware or attach a rejection handler rather than assuming Express will forward it.

A missing or rejected token, timeout, provider error, unsuccessful HTTP response, or unreadable provider response must not lead to account creation. Treat Siteverify availability as an explicit product decision; for a signup gate intended to prevent unverified registrations, fail closed by withholding next(). Return a generic message rather than exposing provider details, secrets, or tokens. Log only safe diagnostic information and rate-limit verification attempts to reduce validation flooding.

When verification fails or the token expires, let the user retry with a fresh widget token. Turnstile provides client-side error and expiration callbacks that can support this recovery. Do not silently bypass verification during an outage.

Use Cloudflare’s testing sitekey with its matching test secret in development. These test credentials are separate from production credentials, and production secrets reject dummy tokens.

- Confirm a valid test token reaches the account-creation path.
- Confirm missing, malformed, expired, reused, and provider-rejected tokens do not create an account.
- Simulate a timeout and provider error; verify both block account creation.
- After a recoverable failure, confirm the user can retry with a fresh widget token.
Cloudflare documents Turnstile tokens as single-use and valid for 300 seconds (five minutes); a replayed or expired token fails validation. The submitted token has a documented maximum length of 2,048 characters.
