How to Choose a Chromebook VPN in 2026: Apps, Extensions and Setup

Chromebook VPNs can be Android apps, Chrome extensions or built-in profiles. Learn which protects the traffic you care about and how to set it up.

The best VPN for a Chromebook depends first on what you need to protect. For traffic from Chrome and Android apps, choose an Android VPN app if your Chromebook supports Google Play. A Chrome extension is generally for browser traffic, while a built-in VPN profile can connect to a compatible VPN service or workplace network. These options do not provide identical coverage.

There is no independent test of VPN providers in this article. Gizmodo published a comparison it describes as tested on ChromeOS on September 15, 2026; its findings below are attributed to that publisher. Google’s Chromebook Help documentation is the guide to ChromeOS setup and routing behavior.

What is the best VPN for a Chromebook?

Start by choosing the kind of protection you need, rather than picking a provider from a ranking. If you want a VPN for more than browser tabs, an Android app is usually the more relevant route, provided your Chromebook supports Android apps and has access to Google Play. If you only need browser-focused protection, a Chrome extension may be simpler, but it should not be treated as a system-wide VPN.

Gizmodo’s September 15, 2026 comparison named NordVPN its overall pick, Proton VPN a feature-rich extension option, ExpressVPN a simple Android-app option, and CyberGhost a lower-price option with a free extension. Those are Gizmodo’s judgments, not conclusions from testing conducted for this article. The right choice for you still depends on device compatibility, traffic coverage, and the security features you need.

#1 Best Overall
HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

How the options differ

  • Android VPN app: A suitable choice for broader coverage when installed on a supported Chromebook. Google says a full-tunnel VPN typically routes Chrome, Chrome apps, and Android apps.
  • Chrome extension: A browser-oriented option. Do not assume it protects Android apps or other Chromebook traffic.
  • Built-in VPN profile: A way to configure a supported VPN connection in ChromeOS network settings. It can be useful for a compatible service or an organization’s VPN.

Compare Chromebook VPN options by the job you need done

Gizmodo reported the following Chrome-extension ad-blocking results in its 2026 comparison. These percentages describe that publisher’s extension test, not a general measure of VPN quality or a guarantee about current software behavior.

Provider Gizmodo-reported extension ad blocking Gizmodo’s characterization
NordVPN 52% Overall pick
Proton VPN None Feature-rich extension option
ExpressVPN 87% Simple Android app
CyberGhost None Lower-price option with a free extension

Gizmodo said the five extensions in its comparison did not leak an IP address through WebRTC and did not have kill switches; it reported that the tested Android apps did have kill switches. These are publisher-reported test findings from September 2026, not a promise that every version, setting, or device will behave the same way. A kill switch or ChromeOS “Block connections without VPN” setting matters if you want to reduce the chance that traffic falls back to a direct connection when a VPN disconnects.

What to check before subscribing

  • Coverage: Confirm whether the product is an Android app, a browser extension, or both, and which Chromebook traffic each option routes.
  • Compatibility: Confirm that your specific Chromebook supports Android apps and Google Play before choosing an app-based service.
  • Interruption protection: Check whether the app provides a kill switch and whether your ChromeOS configuration supports always-on VPN or blocking connections without the VPN.
  • Leak protection: Look for clear information about DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leak protection, and distinguish provider claims from independent test results.
  • Privacy and performance: Review the privacy policy and any independent audit evidence. Treat speed or streaming claims as meaningful only when the test method, locations, and date are clear.
  • Subscription terms: Compare the billing period, renewal price, refund terms, and any device limit—not just a headline monthly price.

Check Chromebook compatibility before installing

Google’s setup guidance says Android VPN apps can be installed on Chromebooks that support the Play Store. Support varies by device. ExpressVPN’s Chromebook instructions also require Android-app support and warn that some older models affected by extended security updates may no longer have Play Store access. If Google Play is unavailable, an Android app installation will not be an option on that device.

On a school or work Chromebook, an administrator may manage VPN settings or restrict the Play Store and Chrome extensions. Google directs users with organizational VPN problems to their administrator. Do not try to bypass management controls; ask the administrator which approved VPN route is available.

Install a VPN on a Chromebook

Install an Android VPN app

  1. Check that the Chromebook supports Android apps and that Google Play is available on the device.
  2. Open the Google Play Store, find the VPN provider’s official Android app, and install it.
  3. Open the app and sign in or create an account as required by the provider.
  4. Connect to a location, then review the app’s security settings for features such as a kill switch. Available controls vary by provider.

Proton’s official Chromebook instructions use this Play Store and sign-in route for Chromebooks that support Android apps. Proton advertises free and paid account options, as well as a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and split tunneling. Its provider page states that paid accounts can use the service on up to 10 devices and advertises a network of more than 20,000 servers in over 140 countries; those are provider-published figures and can change.

Set up a built-in VPN profile

  1. Open ChromeOS Settings and go to Network.
  2. Choose the option to add a VPN connection or configure a VPN profile.
  3. Enter the connection details supplied by the VPN provider or your organization, and save the profile.
  4. Connect from the network settings and confirm that the profile shows as connected.

The available profile types and fields depend on the VPN configuration you have been given. Google documents built-in profiles as one of the Chromebook VPN routes; a profile is not a subscription or server service by itself.

Use a Chrome VPN extension

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store and find the extension published by the VPN provider.
  2. Install it, then sign in or configure it as the provider directs.
  3. Connect through the extension and remember that browser-extension coverage is not automatically equivalent to a device-level VPN app.

Before relying on an extension, check whether it works independently or requires another app, and what traffic it actually covers. In Gizmodo’s September 2026 tests, the extensions lacked kill switches, unlike the tested Android apps.

Understand full tunneling, split tunneling and connection blocking

Google describes a full-tunnel VPN as typically routing traffic from Chrome windows, Chrome apps, and Android apps through the VPN. With split tunneling, only selected traffic goes through the tunnel; other traffic uses the Chromebook’s physical network. Whether a provider offers split tunneling, and how it handles particular apps, depends on its software and configuration.

Google also documents an always-on option for supported Android VPN configurations and a “Block connections without VPN” setting. These controls are intended to prevent ordinary direct connections when the VPN is unavailable, but the exact availability and behavior depend on the device and configured app. Check the settings on your Chromebook rather than assuming every VPN app exposes the same controls.

When OpenVPN Connect is the right fit

OpenVPN Connect’s Android app supports ChromeOS and can connect to compatible OpenVPN servers, Access Server, and CloudConnexa networks, according to OpenVPN’s documentation. This is relevant if you already have access to a personal or organizational OpenVPN endpoint. The client is connection software; it does not itself provide a retail VPN subscription or server network.

Why test results and prices need context

VPN rankings are snapshots of a publisher’s evaluation, not permanent labels. Gizmodo’s September 15, 2026 guide reports Chrome-extension tests, including WebRTC IP-leak checks and ad-blocking results. Security.org describes an evaluation process that includes buying and installing services as a regular user, measuring speeds across dozens of servers, checking DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leaks, testing kill switches by interrupting connections, reviewing privacy policies and audits, and checking streaming access. That description is a methodology outline; it does not establish that every provider discussed here was tested under that process.

Gizmodo also listed monthly prices in its comparison, but prices depend on plan, billing period, promotions, and renewal terms. Check the provider’s current checkout page before subscribing, and compare the amount due over the full billing term with the renewal price. Do not assume a displayed monthly equivalent is a month-to-month rate.

Common Chromebook VPN problems

The VPN app is missing from Google Play

Check the Chromebook’s Android-app and Play Store support. Older devices can lose Play Store access, and managed devices may have installation restrictions. If the device is managed, ask its administrator about approved options.

The VPN disconnects or traffic appears to go direct

Review the VPN app’s connection and kill-switch settings, then check whether ChromeOS offers always-on VPN or “Block connections without VPN” for that configuration. An extension may not offer the same interruption protection as an Android app.

Only browser traffic seems protected

You may be using an extension rather than a full-tunnel app. Check the provider’s documentation and ChromeOS network status to determine whether Android apps and other Chromebook traffic use the VPN.

A work or school VPN profile will not connect

Organizational VPN profiles may depend on administrator settings or a specific server configuration. Contact the school or workplace administrator instead of changing managed settings yourself.
