Download Samsung Smart Switch for a computer from Samsung’s official Smart Switch page, then choose the Windows or Mac installer. Samsung says the computer software is free. Most newer Galaxy phones and tablets already have the mobile app; older Galaxy devices and other Android phones may need to install it from the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store.
Where to download Smart Switch for Windows or Mac
Use Samsung’s official Smart Switch page and select the download for your computer’s operating system. Avoid unofficial download sites. Samsung’s UK backup guide, updated June 19, 2026, says the software can be downloaded for free. The exact download and requirements can vary by region, so use the Samsung page for your country.

How to install Smart Switch on a computer
- Open Samsung’s Smart Switch page for your region and select Windows or Mac OS.
- Download and open the installer, then follow the installation wizard. Samsung Australia’s guide, updated August 20, 2026, notes that Windows may prompt you to restart after installation.
- Launch Smart Switch. To back up or restore a phone, connect it with a USB cable that supports data transfer and allow the connection on the phone if prompted.
Do you need to install it on your phone?
Smart Switch is already installed on most newer Galaxy phones and tablets. If it is missing, or if the source is an older Galaxy or another Android device, look for the app in the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store. Samsung’s availability guidance is on its Smart Switch support page.

Check compatibility before connecting devices
Samsung’s requirements differ between regional pages and by task. Its US troubleshooting page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later for the computer, Android 4.3 or later for general transfers, and Android 7.0 or later for encrypted data transfers. It also says Chromebooks are not compatible. Samsung Australia’s Smart Switch page lists Windows 10 or higher and macOS 10.13 or higher; its phone and tablet FAQ lists Android 6.0 or higher and iOS 12 or higher. Check the current requirements on your local Samsung site for your device pair and transfer method.

Back up to a computer and restore to a Galaxy
- Install Smart Switch on the computer and connect the source phone using a data-capable USB cable.
- Open Smart Switch and choose Backup. Ensure the computer has enough free storage for the backup.
- When ready to move the backup, connect the new Galaxy and choose Restore.
Samsung notes that not every USB cable carries data. If the computer does not recognize the phone, try another USB port and cable; Samsung also recommends reinstalling the device driver through Smart Switch. Steps and available options may differ by operating system and region.
Choose a transfer method that fits your devices
- Computer backup and restore: Useful when you want a stored backup before setting up a Galaxy. It requires the computer software and a data-capable cable.
- Direct wired transfer: Connect the phones using a compatible cable and follow Smart Switch prompts. Samsung recommends cable for iPhone-to-Galaxy transfers when the goal is to support the broadest range of data.
- Wireless transfer: Available for some device combinations; the options depend on the phones and operating systems.
- iCloud route: Samsung also describes an iCloud-based option for some iPhone-to-Galaxy migrations.

What Smart Switch transfers—and what may be left behind
Smart Switch can move contacts, photos, messages, and other files, and can create a computer backup for later restoration to a Galaxy. It does not guarantee that every item or app will transfer. Samsung warns that secure or encrypted content, including some WhatsApp chats, may not transfer; DRM-protected content cannot transfer; some app logins may need to be entered again; and apps unavailable on the destination platform may be excluded. Check app-specific backup instructions and keep your login credentials available before switching.
