Its project documentation describes conventional synchronization, files-on-demand streaming, and recovery features. The title of its August 21, 2026 post promises the author’s reasons for building it, but the post’s body is not available at DEV Community; the personal motivation therefore cannot be stated reliably.
What TuxInDrive is designed to do
The TuxInDrive project repository describes a single client for Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, pCloud, MEGA, Proton Drive, Nextcloud, S3-compatible storage, WebDAV, SFTP, and GitHub repositories. The project presents the app as open source under the MIT license; rclone, which it uses as its synchronization engine, is a separate program with its own license.

The shared desktop interface is built with GTK for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Android uses a native mobile layout while using the same rclone synchronization engine. The intended benefit is a common way to manage varied remote storage services, rather than a claim that every provider behaves identically or that the client replaces each provider’s own features.
Why the author says they built it remains unconfirmed
The post discovered under Tomas Pluharik’s name is titled “Why I built TuxInDrive: one open-source sync client for multiple clouds” and is dated August 21, 2026. Its body could not be accessed, so its actual explanation of the project’s origin, the problem the author wanted to solve, and the design trade-offs is not established. The project description supports explaining what TuxInDrive aims to do, but not attributing a personal story or specific motivation to its author.

How its sync and streaming modes differ
Synchronization for local copies
The project documents two-way synchronization, with retained conflict copies, as well as download-only and upload-only mirror modes. It also describes selective folder synchronization, background and incremental sync, and local version history and recycle recovery. These are documented project capabilities, not independent test findings.
Mirror and bidirectional sync can carry local changes—and, within configured limits, deletions—to remote storage, or carry remote changes to a local copy. Keep a separate backup of important files before connecting an account. The project describes safeguards including deletion limits, a non-destructive preview for established jobs, pauses when it detects suspicious mass changes, conflict review, and recovery features. Those safeguards may help manage particular failure modes; they are not a guarantee against data loss.

Streaming drives for files on demand
TuxInDrive also describes streaming drives that expose a cloud file tree locally and fetch file contents in chunks as needed. This is files-on-demand access, not media streaming. The project says the feature requires WinFsp on Windows and macFUSE on macOS; consult its current installation instructions for prerequisites and availability.
Search and content indexing
The project describes optional local filename and path search, plus a separate local content index that is off by default. These functions concern locally indexed information; their presence alone does not establish how they perform on a particular collection or what data is available to search. Check the project’s documentation for the current behavior and controls before enabling indexing.

Platforms, releases, and installation
The repository lists Debian packages, Windows and macOS installers, an Android APK, and an Ubuntu PPA. At the time represented by the repository information used here, its stated targets were Ubuntu 24.04/26.04, Debian 12/13, Windows 10/11 x64, macOS 12 or later, and Android 8 or later; the displayed client release was 0.26.67. These requirements and release details can change. Check the repository’s current releases and installation instructions before downloading or relying on a listed platform target.
For Google Drive, the project says a dedicated Desktop OAuth application is required because rclone’s shared Google client is being retired during 2026. Organizational deployments and other OAuth providers may also need their own application configuration. Confirm the current TuxInDrive setup guidance and the relevant provider policies before authorizing an account.

What to check before trusting it with files
Understand the direction of change
- Choose between two-way sync, download-only mirroring, upload-only mirroring, or streaming based on what you need; do not assume those modes have the same effect on local and remote files.
- Review the job preview, deletion limits, conflict behavior, and recovery options described by the project before starting a sync.
- Keep an independent backup of important data. Sync history and recycle recovery are not substitutes for a separate backup.
Review credential handling and trust boundaries
The repository says OAuth tokens and credential-provider secrets remain in rclone’s encrypted configuration, with the configuration password kept in GNOME Secret Service, and says logs do not contain a configuration dump. These are project statements, not a blanket security guarantee. Read the project’s security policy and operational documentation to understand the full trust boundary, platform-specific handling, and any limitations.

Check compatibility and setup requirements
- Verify the current supported operating systems, release, and installation path in the official repository.
- Confirm whether streaming-drive support needs an additional filesystem component on your operating system.
- Check whether your organization or cloud provider requires a dedicated OAuth application or administrator approval.
What the project description can—and cannot—settle
TuxInDrive’s documented scope is a multi-provider client with desktop and Android interfaces, several synchronization modes, streaming access, and described recovery and credential-handling measures. The evidence here is project-authored documentation, not independent verification of reliability, security, or performance. And because the author’s post body is unavailable, the “why I built it” part of the title remains unanswered: the defensible account is what the project says it does, not an invented account of its creator’s motives.
