Start with Apple’s carrier directory for your country or region, then verify eSIM support for the specific plan and iPhone model with the provider. Compare how you can activate or transfer the eSIM, coverage where you’ll use the phone, plan terms and support. If you plan to use a different carrier, check that your iPhone is unlocked.
Check your iPhone and the carrier’s availability
Open Apple’s carrier directory and select the country or region where you need service. Its listings distinguish among eSIM Carrier Activation, eSIM Quick Transfer, other activation methods and prepaid plans for international travelers, where available. A listing for one method does not mean every plan from that provider supports eSIM or every activation method.

Apple documents iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later as the baseline for its travel eSIM use case. Regional model differences can affect compatibility, so check your exact model with the carrier and review cellular-band support for your destination. The carrier should confirm that the particular plan you want supports eSIM on that device.
Compare how you will activate or transfer the eSIM
Choose a provider whose supported setup method works for your situation. Apple’s directory uses these categories:
#1 Best Overall
- 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED, HDR10, 800 nits (HBM), 1200 nits (peak), 2532x1170px at 460ppi, 4005mAh Battery
- 8GB RAM, Apple A18 6-core CPU (2 performance + 4 efficiency cores), Apple GPU 4-core, 16‑core Neural Engine
- Rear camera: 48MP, f/1.6, wide, Front Camera: 12MP, f/1.9, wide, iOS 18.3.1, upgradable to iOS 18.5
- Connectivity: Global 4G LTE, Sub-6 GHz 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB-C, Wireless Charging (7.5W). (does not have mmWave 5G or MagSafe or physical SIM card) - Dual eSIM Only
- Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.
- eSIM Carrier Activation: The carrier can assign an eSIM digitally.
- eSIM Quick Transfer: When supported, you can transfer a number from an old iPhone without contacting the carrier.
- Other activation methods: Setup may involve scanning a QR code or using the carrier’s app.
Check the directory entry for the relevant country, then ask the carrier whether your chosen plan supports the method you prefer. A provider may support eSIM without offering every activation or transfer option on every plan.
Check whether your iPhone is unlocked
If you want to use plans from two different carriers on one iPhone, Apple requires the iPhone to be unlocked. Otherwise, both plans must be from the same carrier. To check, go to Settings > General > About and look for “No SIM Restrictions” next to Carrier Lock. Apple says: “If your iPhone is unlocked, ‘No SIM Restrictions’ will appear next to Carrier Lock.”

Compare plans on their terms, not just the eSIM label
Apple’s directory helps identify providers and activation capabilities; it does not rank carriers by price, value or performance. Compare the specific offers directly with each provider:

- Roaming availability and charges, plus renewal and cancellation terms.
- Customer support options if setup or service goes wrong.
For coverage questions, ask the carrier about service where you will actually use the phone. Apple’s guidance for organizations also recommends asking carriers about coverage and capacity at provisioned locations; those factors can matter when comparing service in a particular area.
Rank #3
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Choose between roaming and a travel eSIM
When traveling, you can use your home carrier’s international roaming, buy a local prepaid plan or consider a worldwide service provider. Apple says eSIM roaming works like roaming with a physical SIM. Check whether your current plan already includes roaming and compare its terms with the alternatives. If the travel plan comes from a different carrier, your iPhone must be unlocked.
Before buying, confirm that the provider supports eSIM on the exact plan and iPhone, and check that the phone supports cellular bands used at your destination. Apple’s travel guidance also notes that, with iOS 26, a travel eSIM may automatically turn off and the home SIM may turn back on when you return, depending on the country or region.
