Set a firm maximum for the total you will pay in your own market, then compare phones by how long they will remain securely supported—not by sticker price alone. Check the exact model’s update policy, make sure its storage, battery and speed suit your daily use, and include any required plan or fees in the cost.
Start with your budget and market
Decide the most you can spend, including required service-plan costs, taxes or fees where applicable. Prices, deals and device availability vary by country and retailer, so a phone that is good value in one market may not be in another. Compare the total purchase cost of each candidate in your market rather than relying on an international price or an old deal.

Phone costs may face upward pressure, but forecasts are not the same as confirmed retail price changes. An issuer annual report dated March 31, 2026, quoted a Counterpoint Research forecast that memory prices would rise by an additional 40% through Q2 2026, bill-of-material costs by 8% to more than 15%, and average smartphone selling prices by 6.9%; it also forecast global smartphone shipments would fall 2.1% year over year. These are projections, not evidence that every phone has already become more expensive. The report also said phones below $150 accounted for nearly 60% of African smartphone volumes and 30% of Indian volumes in 2025, and expected that tier to face economic pressure. Read the issuer report.
Compare how much secure life is left
Find the security-update commitment for the exact model, then work out how much of that period remains on the day you plan to buy. A manufacturer’s support period may start at launch, not when a retailer discounts the device. That means an older phone can have fewer supported years remaining than a newer phone with the same advertised support length.

- Identify the precise model. Check the model name and generation on the retailer’s listing; similar names can have different policies.
- Find the manufacturer’s model-specific support policy. Look for the security-update period and when its clock starts. If the end date is unclear, ask the manufacturer or retailer before buying.
- Estimate the remaining period. Subtract the time since the policy’s starting point from the promised support term. Prefer an explicit end date when available.
- Compare the result with your likely ownership period. A low price is less compelling if security support is due to end before you expect to replace the phone.
Which? estimates the average smartphone lifetime at 5.6 years, based on its analysis of recent product surveys; that is an estimate, not a guarantee that any individual phone will last that long. See Which?’s methodology and estimate.
Use cost per year as a comparison, not a rule
Divide the phone’s purchase price by the number of years of security support you expect to use. This simple calculation can reveal why the cheapest handset is not always the lowest-cost choice over time. It does not account for repairs, resale value, a support period that does not match your ownership, or differences in performance and features, so use it alongside those factors rather than as a standalone verdict.
Which? illustrates the calculation with a £850 phone offering seven years of support (£121 per year) and a £280 phone with two years of security support (£140 per year). These are arithmetic examples from Which?, not current market averages or universal prices. Read Which?’s UK buying example.

- Everyday speed: Look for reliable reviews of the exact model and consider whether it handles your apps without frustrating delays. More RAM on a spec sheet is not a complete measure of performance.
- Storage: Check how much usable space is available and whether the phone supports expandable storage if you keep many photos, videos or downloaded files.
- Battery and charging: Check independent battery testing where available, and make sure charging speed and charger availability fit your routine. A larger battery number alone does not guarantee longer real-world use.
- Camera: Compare sample photos and reviews in the situations you care about, such as low light or moving subjects; megapixels alone do not predict results.
- Display: Consider readability, size, brightness and refresh behavior in relation to how you use the phone.
- Compatibility and ecosystem: Confirm network-band and carrier compatibility in your country, and check that the operating system and apps work with the services and accessories you rely on.
Choose between new, discounted and refurbished
New at full price
A new phone can make sense when its remaining support period and useful features justify the cost within your budget. Compare the final price, not just a headline monthly payment, and include any required plan or fees.
Discounted older model
A discount can be worthwhile if the exact model still has enough security support left for your plans. Check its launch date and support end date rather than treating the original promise as the years you will receive from purchase.

Refurbished or second-hand
Used phones can cost less, but condition and performance vary. Before paying, check:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the seller’s grade description and what cosmetic or functional defects it permits;
- battery health or the seller’s battery replacement policy;
- the warranty, return window and who handles a fault;
- network compatibility and whether the device is locked or otherwise restricted;
- the exact model’s remaining security support.
Read the seller’s terms and the buyer protections that apply in your location; rights and return rules differ by country and seller type. Do not assume a refurbished label guarantees a particular battery condition or support life.

Use the same shortlist check for every candidate
Before choosing, put each phone against the same questions:
- What is the total cost in my market, including any required plan and fees?
- How much model-specific security support remains from my purchase date?
- Does performance and storage fit my everyday use?
- Will the battery and charging meet my needs?
- If it is used, are its condition, warranty and return terms acceptable?
- Does it work with my carrier, apps and ecosystem?
For a UK-specific illustration, Which? cited the Pixel 9 with a six-month average price of £789 and a six-month low of £399, alongside a seven-year security-update term. Those figures are source-time UK context, not a current quote or a recommendation for other markets. Confirm the exact listing, price and remaining support before buying. Which?’s example.
