Gemini keeps the familiar Android Auto voice tasks—calls, messages, navigation and music—while adding more natural requests and follow-up conversation. Google describes a gradual transition from Assistant to Gemini, not a single switch date for every driver. Whether you can use Gemini depends on your phone, vehicle, language and region.
What changes when you use Gemini instead of Google Assistant?
The clearest difference is how you can speak. Google says Gemini understands the same commands as Google Assistant, but it also supports natural-language requests and conversation across turns. That means you can make a request, add a detail or ask a follow-up without treating every instruction as a separate fixed command. Google also describes Gemini Live for in-car conversation. These are interaction differences; Google’s documentation does not establish that Gemini is faster or more accurate than Assistant.

What can Gemini or Google Assistant do in the car?
Calls and messages
You can use voice commands for calling and messaging. Google describes a send-and-confirm flow for messages: you can ask to send, cancel or refine a message, and Gemini can summarize incoming messages. Check the proposed message before it is sent. Google’s Android Auto voice-command help
Navigation
Android Auto supports voice navigation and destination requests. If you need to type a destination on the car screen, Google says the vehicle must be in Park. Google’s Android Auto voice-command help

Limitations to keep in mind
Gemini can be wrong
Google warns that Gemini can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as fact. Its guidance is not to rely on Gemini for critical information or safety-related matters while operating a vehicle.
