Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose a telecom-site battery by working from the service the site must maintain—not from a chemistry preference or a generic backup-hours rule. First establish the critical DC load and required autonomy, then identify whether the battery is mostly on float standby or cycles regularly. Use those requirements, the site environment, manufacturer discharge data, and the DC plant’s compatibility limits to compare complete battery systems. The right capacity and chemistry depend on the site’s load, outage profile, power system, environment, and jurisdiction.
How many hours of backup does a telecom site need?
Set autonomy from the consequences of losing service and the time the site must bridge an outage. Account for local outage history and grid quality, generator start and transfer reliability, fuel availability, repair response time, and the loads that must remain powered. A site with routine renewable or weak-grid cycling needs a cycling-duty design, not just occasional-standby capacity.

ITU-T L.1397 (2025) describes typical battery standby spans of 10 minutes to 48 hours at grid-connected sites, while off-grid telecom sites may need autonomy lasting several days. These are broad context ranges, not a recommendation or sizing standard for a particular site.
An excerpt of IEEE 946-2020 gives traditional-site examples of 3–4 hours of battery backup where a permanent on-site auto-start, auto-transfer generator-alternator is available, and 8 hours where it is not. These are contextual examples from an excerpt consulted through a third-party-hosted copy; verify the wording and context in the official edition before relying on them. Neither figure replaces an assessment of the site’s actual outage and operational requirements.

Define the load before choosing the duration
List the DC loads that must remain online and separate them from loads that can be shed. Record steady and peak current or power, the operating-voltage range, expected load growth, and the order in which noncritical loads would be disconnected. This load profile and the required discharge period are the basis for sizing.
Is the battery for standby or regular cycling?
Classify the duty before comparing technologies. A battery that spends most of its life on float and discharges during occasional outages faces a different operating pattern from one that cycles frequently because of an unreliable grid or renewable generation. For cycling duty, specify expected cycle frequency and depth of discharge, as well as the time available to recharge after an outage or discharge.
Also record the operating environment: ambient and battery-room temperatures, indoor or outdoor placement, available cabinet or floor area, structural loading, ventilation, service access, and any temperature-control limits. ETSI TS 103 553-2 (2021) discusses space and weight constraints in the context of telecom implementations; actual site dimensions and load limits still need to be checked against the proposed equipment.

Should a telecom site use lead-acid or lithium?
Compare complete systems against the site’s duty and interfaces rather than treating chemistry as a proxy for suitability. Useful comparison points include usable capacity at the required discharge rate and temperature, power capability near the end of discharge, charging behavior, footprint and weight, monitoring integration, safety evidence, maintenance requirements, replacement logistics, and lifecycle cost under the expected duty.
ETSI TS 103 553-2 (2021) describes two lead-acid telecom examples. The figures below belong to those described examples; they are not guaranteed service lives or performance claims for every current product.
| ETSI example | Use and stated characteristics |
|---|---|
| Gel lead-acid | A large 48 V multistring installation, with the example string designed for three or more hours of autonomy. ETSI states up to 12 years at 25 °C and 6 years at 35 °C for this example, and more than 1,000 deep cycles at 80% depth of discharge. |
| AGM lead-acid | Modules in a telecom cabinet, described as medium-lifetime float backup with limited cycling. ETSI states up to 8 years at 25 °C and 4 years at 35 °C for this example. |
| LFP lithium | ETSI ES 203 700 (2020) discusses LFP storage in the context of 5G power systems, including remote-management communication and safety considerations. The cited material does not establish a universal service-life figure for LFP systems. |
These examples help frame questions for suppliers; they do not establish which chemistry will perform best at a particular site. Ask for product-specific discharge data, temperature limits, cycle-life conditions, warranty terms, safety documentation, and service support for the intended installation and duty.

How do you size the battery and power equipment?
Size from the actual DC load profile and the manufacturer’s discharge data—not from a nominal amp-hour label alone. Before requesting a calculation, define the discharge duration, minimum acceptable load voltage, operating-temperature range, battery end voltage, and required reserve at end of life. State whether the design load is constant current, constant power, or time-varying.
Recommended Free Tools
- Document the load and endpoint. Include the critical-load current or power over time, allowable voltage range, discharge duration, and any load-shedding sequence.
- Use data for the real discharge conditions. Select manufacturer discharge tables for the required rate, temperature, and end voltage. Apply appropriate allowances for aging, temperature, and uncertainty, and make clear whether the capacity requirement is at beginning or end of life.
- Check voltage-dependent current. With a constant-power load, current can rise as battery voltage falls. Sizing by nominal watts divided by nominal voltage can therefore understate the current required near the end of discharge; the IEEE 946-2020 excerpt flags this distinction.
- Check the complete DC plant. Confirm that the selected battery configuration and discharge endpoint can serve the loads within their acceptable voltage range, including the effects of cabling, protection, and low-voltage disconnect settings.
IEEE 485-2020 covers defining DC load and sizing stationary lead-acid batteries for float-service applications. Its scope excludes other battery chemistries, as well as installation, maintenance, qualification, testing procedures, and charger sizing. For lithium systems and for parts of the DC plant outside that scope, use applicable engineering guidance and the battery and power-system manufacturers’ data.
A nominal amp-hour figure is not meaningful for comparison unless it is accompanied by the voltage, discharge duration or rate, endpoint voltage, temperature assumptions, and beginning- or end-of-life basis. The information in this guide cannot determine a site-specific capacity.

What compatibility and monitoring checks belong in procurement?
Verify the battery against the existing or planned DC plant before ordering. A telecom battery is not a drop-in replacement simply because its nominal voltage matches.
- Nominal DC bus voltage and the battery’s allowable charging, float-voltage, and current limits.
- Rectifier compatibility, including supported battery chemistry and charging profile.
- String configuration, parallel-string rules, protection, cabling, isolation, and low-voltage disconnect behavior.
- Enclosure and installation requirements, including ventilation, environmental limits, and access for servicing or replacement.
- Battery-management-system communications, alarms, and the operator’s required remote visibility of voltage, current, temperature, state of charge, and state of health.
ETSI ES 203 700 (2020), in its section on LFP systems, states: “The lithium battery shall communicate with power system and management system for remote management.” Treat this as a specification requirement to evaluate against the applicable standard edition and product evidence, not as proof that any particular battery will integrate with a given plant. ITU-T L.1397 (2025) describes integrated battery units with a BMS and integrated battery systems that may include a master battery-management module.
How should you plan maintenance and replacement?
Include operation and end-of-life planning in the selection, not as a later handoff. Confirm who will review alarms and remote measurements, which periodic checks or remote tests are required, what skills and access maintenance needs, and how replacement batteries will be sourced and installed. Account for service logistics and disposal obligations in the lifecycle comparison.

Maintenance depends on the battery type. IEEE 450-2020 addresses maintenance, testing, and replacement for permanently installed vented lead-acid standby batteries. Do not apply that scope indiscriminately to VRLA or lithium systems: follow the relevant standard, manufacturer instructions, and local site-safety requirements for the equipment selected.
How can you compare shortlisted systems?
Use the same site assumptions for every supplier proposal. Ask each supplier to show how the proposed configuration meets the load, duration, temperature, endpoint, duty, and integration requirements—not just its nominal energy rating.
| Comparison area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Autonomy and load | Critical-load discharge duration, load growth, endpoint voltage, and load-shedding sequence. |
| Duty | Float standby versus routine cycling, expected cycle frequency and depth, and available recharge window. |
| Capacity and power | Usable energy and current at the real discharge rate and temperature, including power near end voltage. |
| Site fit | Cabinet or floor area, weight, temperature control, ventilation, and service access. |
| Integration | DC bus and rectifier limits, BMS and monitoring protocol, protections, and parallel configuration. |
| Safety and operations | Applicable qualification evidence, alarms, isolation, maintenance skills, and replacement logistics. |
| Lifecycle | Vendor-supported service life under the intended duty and temperature, warranty, service costs, and disposal obligations. |
Which mistakes most often undermine a battery choice?
- Copying backup hours from another site without accounting for local outages, generator availability, fuel, response times, and the critical load.
- Comparing nominal amp-hour ratings without matching discharge rate, endpoint voltage, temperature, and end-of-life assumptions.
- Choosing lithium solely for energy density or lead-acid solely for familiarity without evaluating duty, charging, monitoring, safety, footprint, maintenance, and lifecycle requirements.
- Treating a consumer-market battery listing as a telecom-grade replacement without confirming its DC-plant compatibility and engineering requirements.
- Assuming ETSI’s example lifetimes or cycle count are guaranteed field performance or universal values.
For a project design, the responsible engineer must validate the load study and calculations, applicable code and jurisdictional requirements, battery-to-rectifier interfaces, fire and electrical safety, and local approvals. IEEE 2030.2.1-2019 is an active IEEE guide listing for BESS design, operation, maintenance, and integration; its applicability should be assessed alongside the site’s specific requirements.
